Sat Jul 6 201301:05J.J. Putz pitches perfect inning
J.J. Putz finished a 5-0 win without incident on Friday, retiring all three Rockies he faced.
It's OK if Heath Bell gives up homers in five straight appearances, but Putz allows one measly run and he's bumped from the closer's role to mop-up duty. Maybe it's where Putz belongs for the moment, but once he proves he's healthy, he's worthy of being featured over Bell.

Tue Jul 2 201317:03Putz out as Diamondbacks closer, Bell back in
Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Tuesday that J.J. Putz will be used in only low-leverage situations while he rebuilds the strength of his right arm.
Heath Bell is going to be tried as the fill-in closer once again. Putz recently returned from a right elbow strain and doesn't have his best stuff at the moment. He blew a save Monday in his first opportunity since being activated from a month-long disabled list stint.

Tue Jul 2 201300:34J.J. Putz blows save against Mets
J.J. Putz took a blown save Monday in his first save chance since he came off the DL on Saturday.
Putz gave up a run on two hits and a walk in the ninth. That came after David Hernandez allowed a run in the eighth. Putz, Hernandez and Heath Bell all have ERAs between 4.50 and 4.71 this year. The Diamondbacks were hoping Putz's return from an elbow injury would restore stability to the team's pen, but he now has five blown saves in 10 chances this year. He'll almost certainly remain in the closer's role for now, but he's far, far from a sure thing.

Sat Jun 29 201312:53Diamondbacks activate J.J. Putz from DL
Diamondbacks activated RHP J.J. Putz from the 15-day disabled list.
Putz has been out since early May with a right elbow strain but is expected to regain his closer role with Heath Bell struggling. He returns to a 4.26 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, and five saves over 14 appearances with the Diamondbacks.

Fri Jun 28 201316:24J.J. Putz (elbow) to be activated Saturday
J.J. Putz (elbow) will be activated from the disabled list Saturday.
Putz, out since May 7 with a right elbow strain, allowed one run on two hits and three walks in four innings during his four rehab appearances with Triple-A Reno. With Heath Bell struggling, it shouldn't be long before Putz is moved back into the closer role.

Tue Jun 25 201317:58Putz (elbow) throws scoreless rehab inning
J.J. Putz (elbow) threw another scoreless rehab inning on Monday with the Triple-A Reno Aces.
It was the third straight scoreless rehab inning for Putz, who is expected to return from the 15-day disabled list this week. With right-hander Heath Bell pitching so ineffectively, Putz will likely be rushed back into the Diamondbacks' ninth-inning role.

Mon Jun 24 201308:53Putz (elbow) set for back-to-back appearances
J.J. Putz (elbow) is scheduled to make back-to-back appearances on Monday and Tuesday at Triple-A Reno.
If he makes it through both of those rehab outings with no issues, Putz will likely be activated from the disabled list on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Heath Bell badly needs to be replaced at closer, so the timing is good. Putz, 36, has registered a 2.66 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 10.3 K/9 in 125 total innings with Arizona.

Tue Jun 18 201319:01J.J. Putz to begin rehab assignment Thursday
J.J. Putz (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on Thursday.
He'll remain with Reno through next Tuesday, as the D'Backs want him to appear in back-to-back games before being activated. Heath Bell has been scored upon in each of his last three outings and seems likely to cede the closer job back to Putz.

Mon Jun 17 201318:37J.J. Putz feels good during pen session
J.J. Putz (elbow) felt good during a bullpen session on Monday.
Putz has now thrown off a mound a handful of times and is ready to begin a rehab assignment later this week. Assuming he doesn't encounter any setbacks, he should be ready to rejoin the Diamondbacks' bullpen in a week or so.

Fri Jun 14 201309:06J.J. Putz nearing rehab assignment
J.J. Putz (elbow) could begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Reno on Monday.
Putz is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Friday before possibly being cleared to begin a rehab assignment. Given that he's already been out for over a month, he should require a handful of rehab appearances before returning in late June.

Sat Jun 8 201318:11J.J. Putz throws a successful bullpen session
J.J. Putz (elbow) felt good after throwing a successful bullpen session on Saturday afternoon.
Putz sounded "relieved" that the session went as well as it did, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. The right-hander is currently rehabbing a strained flexor pronator and nerve irritation in his right elbow. As long as he continues to make steady progress, Putz should be able to rejoin the Diamondbacks' bullpen before the end of June. Heath Bell is serving as Arizona's closer for now.

Fri Jun 7 201308:43J.J. Putz to throw off mound Saturday
J.J. Putz (elbow) will throw off a mound on Saturday.
It will be his first time throwing from the bump since landing on the DL last month with a sprained ligament, a strained flexor pronator and nerve irritation in his right elbow. Assuming he doesn't have any setbacks, Putz should be ready to rejoin the D'Backs bullpen later this month.

Sun Jun 2 201308:39J.J. Putz could throw off mound next weekend
J.J. Putz (elbow) could throw off a mound by next weekend.
Putz will continue to throw off flat ground early in the week before hopefully progressing to the bump. There's no timetable for the closer's return, but he's obviously making some strides.

Fri May 31 201308:53J.J. Putz (elbow) could throw off mound Mon.
J.J. Putz (elbow) could possibly throw off a mound on Monday.
Or he could play catch again, which is what he's been doing for the last week. With a sprained ligament, a strained flexor pronator and nerve irritation in his right elbow, Putz is certainly still an injury question mark. However, it sounds like he's not far off from a return if he can avoid a setback. Heath Bell has pitched surprisingly well since taking over the closer role, but Putz will probably get the job back as long as he's healthy.

Sat May 25 201319:42Putz (elbow) playing catch, doing exercises
J.J. Putz (elbow) has been playing catch from 90 feet and doing strengthening exercises, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Saturday.
There is still no timetable for a return, and the Diamondbacks will proceed with caution with their 36-year-old closer. But it's promising that Putz is back to throwing less than a month after there were reports he could need season-ending surgery to fix his elbow problems.

Thu May 9 201310:25J.J. Putz doesn't need surgery on right elbow
J.J. Putz will not require major elbow surgery.
Putz has been diagnosed with a sprained ligament, a strained flexor pronator and nerve irritation in his right elbow -- all of which can be addressed through rehab. He will try to return before the end of the 2013 season. Heath Bell has taken over Arizona's ninth-inning gig.

Wed May 8 201318:28'All signs point' to elbow surgery for Putz
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that "all signs point" to J.J. Putz needing major elbow surgery.
Olney says that, even if the Diamondbacks opt for rest and rehab, Putz will be "out a long time." The D'Backs will go with Heath Bell as their closer for now, but David Hernandez is a better pitcher and could easily find himself in the ninth inning before long.

Wed May 8 201317:44Diamondbacks place J.J. Putz on disabled list
Diamondbacks placed RHP J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain.
Putz suffered the injury Tuesday during an appearance against the Dodgers and will likely be sidelined for an extended period of time. Heath Bell is taking over the Diamondbacks' ninth-inning gig and obviously needs to be owned in all standard fantasy leagues. David Hernandez is also a good speculative add.

Wed May 8 201301:59J.J. Putz departs game with elbow stiffness
According to manager Kirk Gibson, J.J. Putz left his appearance Tuesday because of elbow stiffness.
If this has been an ongoing thing for Putz, it'd explain some of his struggles to date. Given his history, the safe play would be to put him on the DL, even if this is termed minor. There hasn't been any comment yet on who might close in Putz's place. David Hernandez, Matt Reynolds and Heath Bell could be part of a committee or perhaps Gibson will pick one of the three. Hernandez is the best reliever of the bunch, but Reynolds is performing better now and Bell got the job done tonight. We'd still take a chance on Hernandez first.

Wed May 8 201301:31J.J. Putz leaves game with hand injury
J.J. Putz left Tuesday's game in the ninth inning with an apparent right hand injury.
Putz was shaking the hand after a leadoff walk to Nick Punto, so perhaps he was dealing with some numbness. If he's done for a while, the Diamondbacks could go to a closer-by-committee, with David Hernandez, Matt Reynolds and Heath Bell in the mix. We'd be more confident Hernandez would get the save chances if he weren't off to a somewhat disappointing start. Bell replaced Putz tonight, as Hernandez had already pitched.
