Tue Jul 2 201317:12Heath Bell to fill in at closer for D'Backs
Heath Bell is the Diamondbacks' closer once again.
J.J. Putz blew a save Monday in his first opportunity since returning from the disabled list, so the Diamondbacks are turning back to Bell. The hefty right-hander is doubtful to have much success but he needs to be owned in most standard fantasy formats for the time being. Josh Collmenter could be next in line now in Arizona.

Thu Jun 27 201321:30Heath Bell converts save Thursday
Heath Bell converted his 14th save of the season with a scoreless 11th inning in Thursday's win over the Nationals.
Bell allowed a one-out single to Adam LaRoche but struck out a batter as the Nats never really threatened. The big righty had allowed a homer in five straight outings but made a mechanical adjustment and looked good tonight. He should hold the closer job for a bit longer as the D'Backs ease J.J. Putz back into action.

Wed Jun 26 201319:50Heath Bell thinks he's fixed mechanical flaw
Heath Bell said Wednesday that he has fixed a mechanical flaw that was leading to his recent struggles.
Bell didn't reveal what it was, but he said he and Diamondbacks pitching coach Charles Nagy noticed it while watching video and he fixed it during a brief side session on Sunday. While technically still the team's closer despite giving up homers in each of his last five appearances, Bell is surely to give the role back to J.J. Putz when he returns from the DL later this week.

Sun Jun 23 201314:05Heath Bell remains Diamondbacks' closer
Diamondbacks manger Kirk Gibson said Sunday that Heath Bell remains the team's closer for now.
It was a half-hearted endorsement, as Gibson also didn't dismiss the possibility of David Hernandez or Brad Ziegler being used in a save situation Sunday. With J.J. Putz also due back soon, Bell, who has allowed a home run in each of his last five relief appearances, is on very shaky ground.

Sat Jun 22 201322:02Bell allows another homer, blows third save
Heath Bell blew his third save of the season Saturday against the Reds.
The Diamondbacks rallied to win it in the bottom of the ninth inning to rescue the struggling right-hander. Bell has allowed a home run in each of his last five relief appearances and seems doubtful to be trusted with another save opportunity anytime soon. David Hernandez is a must-own in all standard fantasy leagues.

Wed Jun 19 201318:48Heath Bell gives up homer in fourth straight
Heath Bell gave up a homer in a fourth straight appearance Wednesday, yet he still picked up his 13th save against the Marlins.
The homer by Justin Ruggiano only brought the Marlins to within 3-1. Bell, however, did allow a hit and a walk afterwards as part of a 31-pitch ninth inning. Fortunately for him, the Diamondbacks now have Thursday off, giving him a chance to recover. Bell, though, is leaving the door wide open for J.J. Putz to reclaim closing duties should Putz's rehab progress as hoped.

Tue Jun 18 201301:06Bell takes loss after allowing HR to Stanton
Heath Bell was charged with the loss after allowing a ninth inning solo homer to Giancarlo Stanton in a tie game Monday.
Entering a 2-2 contest in the top of the ninth, Bell struck out Ed Lucas before Stanton homered to right. Bell (4.23 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) has allowed a home run in three consecutive appearances. Consider it a course-correction after he enjoyed some good luck earlier this season. With J.J. Putz (elbow) close to returning, the clock on Bell's reign as closer may be ticking.

Thu Jun 13 201302:42Heath Bell gives up homer to Dodgers
Heath Bell gave up his second homer in two days Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Bell was working with a four-run lead, so the fact that he allowed a solo homer and another run didn't cost the Diamondbacks. Still, it's a bit of a concern that he's suddenly allowed homers to Juan Uribe and Ramon Hernandez the last two days. He had gone 25 straight appearances without giving up a homer after allowing two in his season debut April 2.

Wed Jun 5 201301:19Bell earns 10th save as D'Backs win in extras
Heath Bell earned his 10th save Tuesday as the Diamondbacks beat the Cardinals 7-6 in 14 innings.
Bell yielded a leadoff double to Yadier Molina to open the bottom of the 14th but David Freese and Pete Kozma struck out swinging and Jon Jay hit into a groundout. Bell is not the safest fantasy closer, but he hasn't allowed an earned run since May 12 and is obviously worth owning for now. Arizona has a two-game lead over San Francisco in the National League West standings.

Wed May 15 201318:55Heath Bell records yet another save
Despite surrendering a double in the ninth, Heath Bell picked up his second save in two days Wednesday against the Braves.
B.J. Upton nearly plated a run with a hard shot up the middle with two outs, but Martin Prado grabbed it and threw to first to end the game. The Diamondbacks had a two-run lead anyway, so it wouldn't have been the end of the world. Bell has five saves in six opportunities the last eight days.

Wed May 15 201300:38Heath Bell picks up fifth save
After blowing Sunday's opportunity, Heath Bell pitched a scoreless ninth for a save Tuesday against the Braves.
Bell pitched around a Paul Goldschmidt error, striking out two of the four batters he faced. That came after David Hernandez struck out the side in the eighth. Bell is now 5-for-6 in his save opportunities this year. Technically, he does have two blown saves, but the first came in the seventh inning of a game last month.

Sun May 12 201320:52Bell suffers blown save in loss to Phillies
Heath Bell suffered a blown save in Sunday's loss to the Phillies.
Bell allowed two doubles and a game-tying RBI single to Domonic Brown to give up a two-run lead in the ninth-inning. It cost Brandon McCarthy his first win of the season and the Phillies went on to eventually win the game in extra-innings. It's not going to take too many more of these outings before David Hernandez takes over as the full-time closer. Bell had previously been 3-for-3 in save situations.

Fri May 10 201300:39Heath Bell notches third straight save
Heath Bell notched his third save in three days Thursday night against the Phillies.
Nursing a one-run lead, Bell gave up a one-out double to Domonic Brown, but he managed to get Carlos Ruiz to fly out and Laynce Nix to ground out to end it. We still don't have much faith in the veteran right-hander, but he should be owned in all fantasy leagues as long as he continues to get opportunities. Since Bell has worked in three straight games, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson could look to David Hernandez or Matt Reynolds for a potential save chance on Friday night.

Thu May 9 201300:55Heath Bell records third save
Heath Bell pitched around a leadoff double to pick up a save in a 3-2 game against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Bell lowered his ERA to 4.40 in picking up his third save. Expect him to be Arizona's closer until he blows at least one save. That said, he might not get the opportunity if one develops Thursday; he'd be pitching on a third straight day, which is something he hasn't done this year.

Wed May 8 201320:32Bell to get first shot at closing for D'Backs
Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Heath Bell will get the first shot at closing while J.J. Putz is out.
Bell told reporters earlier that he and David Hernandez would rotate based on matchups, but it appears that the former Padres and Marlins closer will get the first crack at the job. It's not surprising given that Bell has pitched better than Hernandez in recent weeks. But Hernandez is the more talented pitcher and is a good bet to eventually take the job.

Wed May 8 201319:58Bell, Hernandez to share D'Backs closer role
Heath Bell said Wednesday that he was told he and David Hernandez would handle the eighth and ninth innings depending on matchups in J.J. Putz's absence.
So it sounds like it will be a tag-team effort rather than solely Bell's job initially as had been reported. Bell got the save Tuesday and has pitched better than Hernandez of late, so he'll probably get the next opportunity. Hernandez is a better long-term investment, however.

Wed May 8 201314:13Heath Bell to fill in as Diamondbacks' closer
Heath Bell will fill in for J.J. Putz (elbow) as the Diamondbacks' closer.
Putz left Tuesday's game with elbow stiffness and is expected to be placed on the disabled list. Some considered David Hernandez the favorite to replace him at closer, but Bell has the "proven closer" tag and has actually been pretty effective of late. Pick him up in all fantasy formats.

Wed May 8 201301:53Heath Bell picks up save for Diamondbacks
After replacing an injured J.J. Putz, Heath Bell got three outs for his second save Tuesday against the Dodgers.
The case for making Bell the Diamondbacks closer if Putz lands on the DL would rest entirely on his experience in the role. He has a 4.72 ERA this season, though that does come with a nifty 19/3 K/BB ratio in 13 1/3 innings. Still, David Hernandez is the better bet and Matt Reynolds is pitching the best of anyone in Arizona's bullpen. Those two would make more sense as save candidates.

Fri Apr 26 201308:34Heath Bell turning it around
Heath Bell has allowed one run while striking out 13 over his last 6 2/3 innings.
Bell was disastrous against the Cardinals in his first appearance of the season, giving up three runs and two homers in 1/3 of an inning, but he's great since. "He's got confidence," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "When he had his little blip there, we went and looked at some film and figured some things out." It's possible Bell will wind up being a decent middle reliever for the D'Backs, albeit an overpaid one.

Wed Apr 3 201301:23Heath Bell gives up two homers in debut
Making his Diamondbacks debut, Heath Bell gave up three runs and two homers in one-third of an inning Tuesday against the Cardinals.
It was one thing for the Diamondbacks to take a chance on Bell; it was another for them to actually offer to pay $13 million of the $21 million the Marlins owed him in order to do so. Better bets were available for a fraction of the price.
