The Mets were originally responsible for the entire $21 million sum by the end of 2013, but the $15 million in deferred monies will now be paid in five installments over an additional two years. Heyman writes that the present-day value of the contract is worth only about $850,000 less than the full $21 million, so if Bay ends up making $850,000 or more with his next club, he'll make out ahead in the deal. It's really a win-win for both sides, as the Mets get some much-needed financial relief for 2013.

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer believes that the Indians could be a fit for Jason Bay this offseason.

Hoynes is just dot-connecting, but Bay does have a history with manager Terry Francona and the Indians have a need in left field. Coming off his disastrous 2012, it remains to be seen what type of market develops for Bay. Bay has a .233/.317/.369 batting line, 26 homers and a .686 OPS in 285 games with the Mets and is still owed another $19 million (including a $3 million buyout) in 2013, but the club isn't ready to release him like they did with Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez back in 2011. There's a small chance they could find a trade partner, though they would likely have to take back another undesirable contract in return. The Mets have plenty of uncertainty in their outfield at the moment, so the most likely scenario is that he is on the Opening Day roster next year, even if he's just a part-time player.
