SS Ruben Tejada (left quad strain) was activated from the 15-day DL Monday and for now, figures to be the backup to Aledmys Diaz. As long as Diaz keeps hitting .406, it will be hard to dislodge him, since Tejada is limited offensively. But Tejada is a superior defender and infield defense has been St. Louis' biggest weakness so far, as it is tied for the National League lead in errors.

SS Ruben Tejada (left quad strain) started a rehab assignment Thursday night at Double-A Springfield, going 1-for-3. Tejada could join the Cardinals as early as Sunday and should be in the mix for work, given the team's trouble defensively. St. Louis made 12 errors in the first eight games, 11 by infielders or pitchers, and Tejada is considered to be an excellent defender, although a bit light with the bat.

SS Ruben Tejada was placed on waivers Monday, clearing the way for his release, according to MLB.com.If Tejada goes unclaimed before his waiver period ends Thursday, the Mets can outright release him, making them responsible for only one-sixth of his $3 million salary. If another team claims Tejada, that club would assume Tejada's entire contract. The St. Louis Cardinals in particular need a shortstop after losing Jhonny Peralta to a thumb injury, while the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies and others make varying levels of sense.

SS Ruben Tejada said Saturday that he believes the broken right leg he suffered in Game 2 of the National League Division Series was caused by a dirty slide by Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Chase Utley. Tejada had his back to Utley, who was almost at the bag when he slid into Tejada, who toppled over and suffered a non-displaced fracture in his fibula in the fall. While Tejada said he is no longer mad about the fashion in which he was injured, he also said he has no interest in accepting an apology from Utley, who tried reaching out to him via Mets 3B David Wright. Tejada is expected to be fully recovered for spring training. He batted .261 with three homers and 28 RBIs in 116 games this season.

Wed Sep 23 201522:27Tejada 3-3 with RBI in Wednesday's loss to Braves
Tejada went 3-for-3 with an RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Braves.
The second-half version of Tejada has shown a drastically better batting eye -- he owns a 19:20 BB:K -- and been rewarded for it with a .313 batting average over 147 at-bats. There's still no power or speed in the profile, though, so Tejada's fantasy utility largely remains limited to NL-only formats.

Tejada had a big game Wednesday against the Phillies, going 2-for-4 with an in-the-park homer and four RBI.
The homer stayed in the park, but Phillies right fielder Domonic Brown went out of it (and into the right-field stands) after missing the ball, letting Tejada race around the bases for the first non-fence-clearing long ball of his career. He later added a run-scoring groundout and an RBI single, rounding out the light-hitting shortstop's second multi-RBI effort in 89 games this season.
