Wed Sep 23 201510:42Johnny Manziel: Will Serve As Backup In Week 3
Manziel (elbow) will serve as the Browns' backup quarterback in Week 3 after head coach Mike Pettine announced Wednesday that Josh McCown (concussion) will start Sunday's game against the Raiders.
Manziel shined in a Week 2 victory over the Titans with McCown sidelined by a concussion, but that was not enough to earn him the starting quarterback job moving forward. While Manziel will move back into a backup role for now, he figures to keep the heat on McCown in the coming weeks, and could reclaim the starting role at some point.

Manziel remains listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the Browns' unofficial depth chart, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Manziel drew the start and earned the victory Week 2 against Tennessee, while Week 1 starter Josh McCown was sidelined due to concussion symptoms. In an interview Tuesday with NFL.com, head coach Mike Pettine refused to commit to Manziel as the starter moving forward, and will likely not provide a secure answer until McCown is cleared by the league to play. Neither player is expected to be an elite fantasy quarterback, but it's a situation worth monitoring in 2-QB leagues heading into Week 3's matchup against the Raiders.

Manziel completed 8-of-15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns, but picked up just one yard on three carries in Sunday's 28-14 victory over the Titans.
Manziel set the tone early with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin, then mostly sat back as Cleveland's rushing attack and defense took over until putting the game away late with a 50-yard toss to Benjamin. Owners will surely be disappointed with Johnny Football's lack of rushing production, but he should be able to do more damage with his legs moving forward. There are still plenty of questions about Manziel as a passer at the NFL level, but he at least proved in this one that he's capable of leading the Browns to victory when given the proper support.
Fri Sep 18 201511:50Johnny Manziel: (Elbow) Will Start In Week 2
Manziel (elbow) will start Sunday against the Titans.
Week 1 starter Josh McCown is still going through the concussion protocol and has not been cleared to practice, so Manziel will get the nod under center in Week 2. Manziel, who will be making his third career start, will take on a Titans defense that limited Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston to 16 completions in 33 attempts and intercepted him twice in Week 1.

Manziel may not get the starting nod Week 2 if Josh McCown (concussion) is cleared to practice Friday, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Manziel has been practicing with the first-team offense all week while Josh McCown has been going through the league's standard concussion protocol. However, based on the indications offered by head coach Mike Pettine on Thursday, McCown will get the start if he's able to get back on the practice field Friday. McCown's health is far from a guarantee at this point in time, but is surely worth monitoring in 2-QB formats.

Coach Mike Pettine relayed that Manziel (right elbow) is in line to be limited in individual drills Wednesday, but added that the QB should be able to work fully during the team portions of practice, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
While Pettine suggested that the Browns plan to limit the number of throws Manziel makes in practice this week, it appears as though the QB will be available for Sunday's game against the Titans. Manziel's status for the contest is of course of import, given that fellow signal-caller Josh McCown remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and can't practice until Friday at the earliest. With that in mind, Manziel will take the majority of the Browns' first-team QB reps until McCown returns to the field, with Manziel in line to start Week 2's contest if McCown is unavailable to do so.

With Josh McCown in the NFL's concussion protocol, the Browns are preparing Manziel to start Sunday's game against the Titans, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
If McCown is able to take some practice reps Thursday or Friday, coach Mike Pettine might alter the team's course on that front, but for now it looks like Manziel is tentatively in line to start at QB for the Browns in Week 2.

Manziel said he felt some tightness in his elbow during Sunday' 31-10 loss to the Jets, Ohio.com reports. "There were just a few bites here and there, just a little bit of tightness," Manziel said. "But other than that, for the majority, to go all the way through the game, it really didn't bother me that much."
Josh McCown suffered a concussion toward the end of the third quarter, leaving Manziel to play the rest of the game. Manziel threw a 51-yard touchdown to Travis Benjamin on his second pass of the game, but he still completed just 13 of 24 passes for 182 yards, with the lone touchdown and an interception. He also carried five times for 35 yards, with another impressive scramble called back because of a penalty. Although his running ability and matchup give him some upside if McCown isn't ready for Week 2 against the Titans, Manziel is still a raw passer without many weapons to work with. The elbow issue, which bothered him throughout him the preseason, probably won't impact his Week 2 availability.

Manziel came on for Josh McCown (concussion) in the second quarter Sunday against the Jets, finishing 13 of 24 for 182 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, as well as rushing five times for 35 yards.
Maziel's touchdown, a 51-yarder to Kelvin Benjamin on his second throw of the game, was the first of his career. He took three sacks as well, which should be expected for the young quarterback who often looks to run before checking on all his receivers. McCown will have to progress through the league's protocol for head injuries before he's cleared to practice, and it's entirely possible that Manziel could start in Week 2 against the Titans. Manziel has decent fantasy upside given his ability to run, but he'll have to connect with more receivers to be a legitimate starting option.

Manziel (elbow) was a full participant in Friday's practice and will serve as the Browns' second-string quarterback in Sunday's season opener against the Jets, Ohio.com reports.
Manziel was sidelined for the Browns' final two preseason games due to soreness in his right elbow, but that time off allowed him to rest and return to practice this week. After increasing his workload throughout the past few days, Manziel will be available as Cleveland's backup option to starting quarterback Josh McCown in Week 1 this Sunday.

Manziel (elbow) is expected to be available for Sunday's season opener against the Jets, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Manziel emerged from throwing Monday with what was described as "normal soreness," so it appears he did not suffer any sort of setback. "That was the most he had thrown [for a while}," according to head coach Mike Pettine, who added "But [the soreness] was expected. All signs poin that he'll be good to go for Sunday." Even though he expects to be available, Manziel is unlikely to see much playing time Sunday with Josh McCown having earned a firm grasp on the starting quarterback job. He'll likely serve as the backup, with Austin Davis on hand as an emergency option if anything goes wrong prior to kickoff.

Manziel (elbow) indicated Monday that he is on track to be available to back up Josh McCown in Sunday's season opener against the Jets, the Mary Kay Kabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
In the event that Manziel suffers any setbacks, the team also rosters fellow QB Austin Davis, plus Terrelle Pryor could also serve as an emergency option at the position in games in which he is active.

Manziel (elbow) resumed throwing the football on Monday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
If Manziel throws without pain during the week, he may be able to serve as Josh McCown's top backup in Sunday's season opener against the Jets, though if the Browns elect to play it safe, the team now rosters fellow QB Austin Davis, plus Terrelle Pryor could also serve as an emergency third quarterback Sunday, assuming he suits up.
Tue Sep 1 201515:36Manziel (elbow) will not need surgery
Manziel (elbow) will not need surgery, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
The Browns hope Manziel's elbow soreness will subside with rest, but it's not clear when he'll be ready to serve as the backup quarterback. Thaddeus Lewis or Pat Devlin may need to fill that role to start the season.

Manziel (elbow soreness) will sit out the Browns' final two preseason games, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Per the report, the Browns are shutting down Manziel in the hopes of getting him 100% healthy sooner rather than later. Once that occurs, Manziel is slated to work behind starter Josh McCown. For now though, Thad Lewis and Pat Devlin are the team's healthy backup signal-callers.
Wed Aug 26 201517:32Johnny Manziel: (Elbow) Shut Down
Manziel will be shut down due to lingering elbow soreness, Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland reports. "I just see it as a minor setback," head coach Mike Pettine said. "If this was something he'd never experienced before and the MRI showed something, I'd be a lot more concerned. But this being something he's dealt with before, I'm confident if he's shut down for just a little bit longer, that it'll all come back."
Pettine revealed Wednesday that Manziel has dealt with elbow soreness since high school, but after taking two days off, the discomfort had yet to dwindle. A subsequent MRI revealed no structural damage, but the Browns will nonetheless shelve the second-year quarterback for the time being. As a result, expect Manziel to miss Saturday's preseason game at Tampa Bay, which will reduce the Browns to two healthy quarterbacks (Josh McCown and Thaddeus Lewis).

Manziel's recent elbow soreness is believed to stem from his 3/4 throwing release, Cleveland.com reports.
Manziel left Sunday's practice early due to elbow soreness, which prevented him from participating in Monday's session. While his status for Saturday's preseason game in uncertain, Manziel is only expected to need a couple days of rest and his issue is not considered serious. Nonetheless, given Manziel's ingrained three-quarter release point, it's possible that elbow soreness could occasionally flare up moving forward.
Sun Aug 23 201512:52Manziel left practice early on Sunday
After experiencing some soreness in his right (throwing) elbow, Manziel left practice early on Sunday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Though coach Mike Pettine noted after practice that the Browns are "not anticipating it being a long-term thing," the report suggests that the QB will likely rest his elbow for a few days, with his status for this coming Saturday's game against the Bucs thus unclear. In any case, for the time being, teammate Josh McCown remains atop the Browns' QB depth chart and on track to start the team's regular season opener against the Jets.

Manziel completed 10-of-18 passes for 118 yards and one touchdown, and rushed three times for 19 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Redskins.
Manziel entered the game following halftime and showed flashes during a decent overall performance. The second-year signal-caller punctuated a 94-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown toss to Shane Wynn early in the fourth quarter, but was bothered by the Bills' relentless blitzes while trying to engineer a late comeback drive. Compared to starter Josh McCown, who threw two interceptions and jammed his ring finger Thursday, Manziel should generally be pleased with his performance, which could help him gain ground on McCown for first-team duties.

Manziel completed 7-of-11 passes for 42 yards, adding 14 yards and a touchdown on two carries, in Thursday's preseason opener against the Redskins.
Manziel showed off his wheels on an impressive 12-yard touchdown scamper but didn't do a whole lot with his arm. Josh McCown, who is a heavy favorite to lock down the starting job, completed 5-of-5 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown on his only drive.
