Nix failed his physical with the Giants and will go back to the waiver system, ESPN's Field Yates reports.

A third-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Nix was released by the Texans last week. His career already appears to be on the ropes.

Nix was claimed off of waivers by the Giants on Sunday, the team's official site reports.

Nix was waived by the Texans on Friday, after spending all of last season on Houston's injured-reserve. The former third-round draft pick has yet to play in an NFL game. Nix offers the Giants depth at defensive tackle, becoming the fifth defensive tackle on the active roster. The Giants released tackle Kenrick Ellis and cornerback Mike Harris to make room for both Nix and cornerback Asa Jackson who were both signed Sunday.

A 2014 third-round draft pick, Nix missed most of his rookie season with a knee injury, then apparently failed to impress during training camp. Rookie sixth-round selection Christian Covington will serve as Vince Wilfork's backup at nose tackle. As a recent third-round pick, Nix should draw some interest around the league.

Nix started Saturday's preseason game at nose tackle while Vince Wilfork was rested. He played 20 snaps, second most on the defense.

Nix is expected to make his preseason debut this week against Denver, CSN Houston reports.

Nix missed five games with a knee injury as a senior at Notre Dame last season, but it's unclear what the issue is at the moment. Coach Bill O'Brien refused to reveal details last month. Williams spent his entire rookie season on I.R. last year. His leg was "rolled up" in the preseason finale, but nothing was revealed after.
