Lotulelei continues to work his way back from a stress reaction in his foot suffered early in training camp, and while he was able to return to practice in a limited fashion this week, he's still not ready to play in a game.

For the second consecutive day, Lotulelei's practice reps were capped, but his presence was nonetheless encouraging, as it marked the first time he's fit in drills since sustaining a stress reaction in his right foot at the outset of training camp. Friday's injury report should relay whether or not he's trending toward factoring into the Panthers' rotation at defensive tackle in Week 2.

This marks the first time Lotulelei participated in practice since suffering a stress fracture in his surgically repaired foot in August. It's a good sign for his status regarding Sunday's game, however, more information should be available in the following days.

While the initial news is positive for the Panthers, Lotulelei's injury did appear somewhat serious. His absence would leave a major hole in the team's already questionable run defense.

Lotulelei left Monday's game against the Eagles with a leg injury, and he was ruled out for the remainder of the contest shortly thereafter.

Though valuable to the Panthers, Lotulelei has just 15 tackles (eight solo) and no sacks this season. He appeared to injure his ankle during the third quarter of Monday's game, and he was down on the field for a couple of minutes. If Lotulelei misses time beyond Monday, Carolina will likely need Colin Cole and Dwan Edwards to take on added snaps at defensive tackle.

Coach Ron Rivera said first-round DT Star Lotulelei has already "come a long way" with his pass rushing.

One of the reasons Lotulelei fell to 14th overall in the draft was because he earned a strict run defender label. The Panthers are teaching him to use his hands to shed blockers and are happy with the progress so far. They already know that Lotulelei is going to be an asset when asked to plug up running lanes.
