Spence (back) was placed on the Buccaneers' reserve/physically unable to perform list on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
Spence was already slated to face a one-game suspension to open the season after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, but it looks like the PUP list designation will bump his absence up to at least six games. Once healthy, Spence, who produced 37 tackles and three sacks last season, is expected to factor into the Bucs' defensive line rotation.

Spence (back) faces a one-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, NFL.com reports.
Spence is currently out with a back ailment, but is slated to miss at least one game this season due to his January 2014 arrest for marijuana possession. His absence figures to allow Henry Melton to receive more snaps next to Gerald McCoy at defensive tackles for the Bucs.

Bucs DT Akeem Spence was arrested for possession of marijuana Tuesday afternoon.
Spence was reportedly stopped by an Alabama State Trooper in Flomation, Ala. after he was clocked traveling in excess of 100 MPH. A K-9 then identified an unspecified amount of marijuana in Spence's vehicle. He was booked into Escambia County (Ala.) Detention Center before being released shortly after on $3,000 bond. Spence, the No. 100 overall pick in last April's draft, started 14 games as a rookie next to Gerald McCoy and amassed 29 tackles and one sack.

Thu Jul 11 201317:21Bucs rookie Spence lead candidate to start
The Tampa Bay Times considers Buccaneers rookie DT Akeem Spence the favorite to start at nose tackle.
This comes as no surprise since GM Mark Dominik said as much after drafting Spence. At 6-foot-1, 307 pounds, Spence is undersized by traditional standards, but an increasing number of NFL teams have shown a willingness to sacrifice size for speed along the defensive line.

Bucs agreed to terms with No. 100 overall pick DT Akeem Spence on a four-year, $2.65 million contract.
The Bucs traded up to select the Illinois product, and view him as a legitimate candidate to replace Roy Miller at nose tackle. Spence is a bit undersized for the job at 6-foot-1, 307 pounds, but has quick feet, and the power to shoot through gaps.
