Sendejo was the surprise starter after it appeared that Robert Blanton had won the starting job. Head coach Mike Zimmer called the starting strong safety job "fluid" so it's not clear who will start Week 2.

Blanton confirmed Tuesday that he beat out Andrew Sendejo for the starting job at strong safety, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Blanton, a 2012 fifth-round draft pick, started 13 of the 15 games he played last season, finishing with 106 tackles (72 solo), an interception, a recovered fumble and three passes defensed. As seen last year, he should be a reliable IDP option when he starts, but his job security is shaky due to Andrew Sendejo's presence on the roster.

Blanton will compete with Andrew Sendejo, Tayor Mays, Antone Exum and Anthony Harris for a starting safety role next to Harrison Smith, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Blanton was the starter next to Smith for 13 games last season before losing his job in December to Sendejo. Blanton is unlikely to win the job back, but it's not clear who's the favorite.
