McClellin left Sunday's win over the Chiefs in the third quarter with a left knee injury and didn't return, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Though the Bears were able to escape Sunday with their second straight win, injuries are beginning to mount down the middle of the defense. Nose tackle Jeremiah Ratliff and safety Antrel Rolle have already missed action this season due to various ailments, and now McClellin could be facing a similar fate. The Bears called on undrafted rookie LaRoy Reynolds to fill in at the right inside linebacker spot, and he'd presumably be in line to start next week's game against the Lions if McClellin is sidelined due to the knee injury.

McClellin (elbow) is active for Sunday's game against the Chiefs.

McClellin had been listed as questionable after the elbow issue limited him all week during practice. Despite the injury, it's expected that he'll see his usual full slate of snaps on defense.

McClellin recorded nine total tackles in Sunday's 48-23 loss to the Cardinals.

For the second straight week, McClellin paced the Bears in stops, benefiting greatly from the Cardinals' decision to run the ball 28 times. McClellin seems to have taken well to the move to inside linebacker, but he may need to string together a couple double-digit tackle games before those in IDP leagues jump on board.

The Bears' interior defense wasn't able to completely slow Green Bay wrecking ball Eddie Lacy (19 carries, 85 yards, one touchdown), but McClellin and fellow middle linebacker Christian Jones generally did a good job of finishing off plays, collecting 15 stops between them. Don't expect to see McClellin used as a blitzer as frequently as in years past when he played on the edge, but if health permits, the fourth-year pro will almost certainly surpass last year's career-high total of 36 tackles.

McClellin has impressed the Bears' coaching staff thus far in training camp as he transitions to inside linebacker, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports. "The idea to move [McClellin] inside was a good idea," coach John Fox said. "I think his skill set fits there and we'll see how it goes moving forward. I've been pleased with him so far."

After providing disappointing returns as a 4-3 defensive end in his first two professional seasons and as an outside linebacker in 2014, McClellin may have finally found his niche on the inside in new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's 3-4 scheme. Fangio spoke glowingly about McClellin during minicamp, and the fourth-year player has carried over the positive momentum in training camp, where his athleticism has played up. During Wednesday's 7-on-7 session, McClellin was able to stick with Pro Bowl tight end Martellus Bennett in coverage to break up the pass, and later looked comfortable while changing direction to keep pace with running back Jacquizz Rodgers. If McClellin can continue to flash those skills on a consistent basis during camp drills, he should be able to run away with the starting "Mike" linebacker job.

McClellin appears to be entering training camp as the leading contender to serve as the Bears' "Mike" linebacker in defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's 3-4 scheme, the Chicago Tribune reports.

McClellin has seemed to adapt well thus far to the position move to inside linebacker from the outside, where his lack of speed made him something of a liability in coverage. He'll still have to hold off free-agent signing Mason Foster for starting duties, but McClellin will likely retain the top designation on the depth chart for the time being.

Bears Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio intends to move McClellin to inside linebacker, Chicago Tribune writer Rich Campbell reports.

McClellin has been unable to become the edge-rushing threat the Bears hoped he would be when they selected 19th overall in 2012, but he remains a standout athlete for a linebacker, and Fangio is hoping to turn him into a blitzing threat from the inside of Chicago's new 3-4 defense. McClellin will face a lot of competition from the likes of Jon Bostic and Christian Jones, but he would have significant IDP upside if he can somehow emerge as starter next to Mason Foster.

GM Ryan Pace said Wednesday that the Bears would decline McClellin's fifth-year player option, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.

McClellin remains under contract for the 2015 season -- the final year of his rookie deal -- before he'll become eligible for free agency for the first time. The former first-round draft pick moved to linebacker last season and started 10 of his 12 games, finishing with a career-high 36 tackles, but just one sack. The Bears unsurprisingly decided that McClellin's relatively disappointing production to date didn't warrant the $7.715 million option he would have been due to receive next season.

McClellin played exclusively at linebacker during his third NFL season, but looked to be miscast in the role. His lack of coverage skills made the team reluctant to use him as a three-down linebacker, and he failed to generate enough pass rush to make up for that deficiency. With the Bears bringing in a new general manager this coming season, it wouldn't be a surprise if McClellin is cut or traded.

McClellin collected six tackles in last Thursday's loss to the Cowboys.

McClellin is averaging just a shade over three tackles a game and has only one sack through 10 contests, making him an unappealing option in IDP formats. The third-year player will have one more year on his contract after this season, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Bears attempt to deal the former first-rounder, who hasn't been overly impressive in his transition from defensive line to linebacker.

McClellin accrued seven tackles in Sunday's loss to the Patriots.

After missing four games with a hand injury, McClellin has been able to reclaim his starting job at outside linebacker for the last two weeks, but his production hasn't been particularly noteworthy. Unless he notices more involvement as a pass rusher, it's hard to see McClellin noticing an uptick in value as an IDP.

However, with only five total stops through two games, McClellin may need to make a push for 10 sacks if he hopes to attain relevance as an IDP compared to the league's other stalwarts at linebacker.

McClellin had some bumpy moments in coverage in the Bears' first preseason game, but he's gradually improved as training camp has worn on as he adjusts to the position change. The team has typically taken McClellin off the field in sub-packages in favor of Jon Bostic so far in the Bears' exhibitions, and that trend figures to continue. Still, the move to linebacker should allow McClellin to see a bump in his tackle opportunities in addition to the occasional sack, even as he plays fewer downs than most starting linebackers.

After converting him from defensive end this offseason, the Bears have McClellin competing with Jon Bostic for the SLB job and D.J. Williams for the MLB role in their defense. Wright does not believe McClellin wins either battle. Chicago needs athletes on the field if they hope to improve on their league-worst run defense, and McClellin is one of the better ones they have. He should see some snaps this season regardless of his starting status.
