Carrier caught two of three targets for 27 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Falcons.

Carrier started in place for Jordan Reed (concussion). He will continue to see playing time for as long as Reed is on the sideline.

Reed will have to go through the concussion protocol. He only played in nine games in 2013 because of a serious concussion that lingered the second half of the season.

Starting tight end Jordan Reed was turning in one of the performances he is fully capable of when he can manage to stay off the trainer's table, so Carrier's opportunities as the second stringer were obviously limited. It was precisely injuries to the Redskins tight end depth chart that necessitated Carrier's Aug. 21 trade from the 49ers, and that currently place him only one play away from a starter's role. The third-year pro acquitted himself well in his limited role Sunday, and given Reed's injury history, may very well see additional playing time at some point over the course of the season.

Carrier will open the season as the Redskins' backup tight end, Todd Dybas of The Washington Times reports.

The Redskins signed fellow tight end Anthony McCoy to a contract on Monday, but Carrier will retain the second-string duties behind Jordan Reed. His targets figure to be minimal out of the gate, but starting tight end Jordan Reed had trouble staying healthy the last couple years, so Carrier could wind up with a more prominent role if Reed gets injured again.

Carrier has been traded from the 49ers to the Redskins for a fifth-round pick, CSN Bay Area reports.

Following the placement of both Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen on season-ending injured reserve earlier in the week, the Redskins are in need of a tight end to back up Jordan Reed. Carrier will likely fill that void, but probably won't serve much purpose in fantasy unless Reed were to go down as well.

Nonetheless, the 49ers were impressed enough to retain Carrier's services moving forward and he'll continue to compete for reps at San Francisco's loaded tight end position this season.

With Carrier on IR, the 49ers added TE depth Thursday by activating Garrett Celek from the PUP list and promoting Asante Cleveland from their practice squad.

Carrier got the surprise start at tight end after both Vernon Davis (ankle) and Vance McDonald (knee) were scratched with injuries. Despite getting the start, Carrier didn't reap fantasy rewards as the 49ers simply looked to their wide receivers in an attempt to make up for Davis' absence. We will get a better picture of whether Davis and/or McDonald will suit up next week once practice gets under way, but if Sunday was any indication, then it would be best to leave Carrier on the waiver wire even if he were to receive another start.

He gets the nod, with both Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald inactive Sunday, and merits a look by those scrambling for Week 3 TE help at this stage.

Third on the depth chart at tight end, Carrier was surprisingly quite active in the offense, even before Vernon Davis (ankle) exited with an injury. While Vance McDonald would be the obvious candidate to benefit from any Davis injury, Carrier would also be in line for an increased role in the offense. The 24-year-old former UDFA had one fantastic play in Sunday's game, making a big catch over the middle to set up a Frank Gore touchdown run.

Carrier (hamstring) is dealing with a minor hamstring injury, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports.

Carrier had almost secured the third tight end position with the 49ers, but this hamstring injury will set him back a bit. It doesn't look to be too serious, so there is a decent chance he returns to the field for the team's final preseason game this Thursday.

Carrier could make the team as a third tight end if Garrett Celek (back) isn't ready for the start of the season, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Even if he does make the team as the third tight end, he won't have any fantasy value unless one of the other tight ends in front of him gets hurt.

Eagles waived TE Derek Carrier, DE Eddie McClam, WR Nick Miller, OT Nic Purcell, OL Isaac Remington, TE Will Shaw, DT Daryell Walker, LS James Winchester, and P Brad Wing.

They also waived/injured S Eddie Whitley after a preseason injury. Donnie Jones beat out Wing to be Chip Kelly's punter. Carrier is an excellent athlete, but never made headway up a deep tight end depth chart in Philly.
