This could be another game where the opposition avoids Bowman in the middle of the field and airs it out to test the 49ers' inexperienced corners.

Amidst all of the retirements and releases among the 49ers' once-proud defense, the return of All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman has been the one positive storylines to follow this offseason. All reports from within the 49ers' organization have indicated that Bowman will play in Saturday's first preseason game. This is big news for the veteran linebacker, who didn't line up for one snap in 2014. Assuming his knee holds up during the preseason and remainder of training camp, Bowman has the talent to make a strong bounce back campaign in 2015 for a defense that truly needs him.

Bowman didn't participate in the 49ers' initial padded practice Tuesday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.

Bowman has so far been fitting in all non-padded practices, so he'll likely ease into contact drills in the coming weeks as he continues to distance himself from the torn ACL suffered in January of 2014. Prior to the injury, he put together three consecutive regular seasons with at least 136 tackles, which he supplemented with nine sacks, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, three interceptions, and one defensive touchdown during that span. If all goes as planned, he'll man inside linebacker once Week 1 arrives.

Bowman is expected to be ready for on-field team activities at the end of April, CSN Bay Area reports.
