Wed Jul 30 201418:30Shelley Smith still struggling at center
ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker said the team's center position "is starting to become a major concern."
Converted-guard Shelley Smith has struggled with errant snaps as he tries to transition to center, and was benched in favor of Nate Garner after two more fumbled snaps Wednesday. If Smith's struggles continue, the Dolphins could turn to Garner or free agent Samson Satele. The Dolphins' offensive line remains a mess.

Sat Jul 26 201415:04Smith and Tannehill struggle with exchanges
Converted G Shelly Smith and QB Ryan Tannehill struggled with center-to-quarterback exchanges on the first day of Dolphins' camp.
The lack of cohesion was unsurprising considering Smith was not informed of the position switch until two days before camp. Still, with Mike Pouncey sidelined until at least midseason, it is an issue the Dolphins need to work out. The rest of the "rebuilt" line did not fare much better during the practice, with bookend tackles Brandon Albert and rookie Ja'Wuan James getting beat regularly.

Fri Jul 25 201413:15Dolphins move Shelley Smith to center
The Dolphins have moved RG Shelley Smith to center.
Smith has "never played center at any level," but the Dolphins are prioritizing run blocking on the pivot with incumbent C Mike Pouncey sidelined until midseason. Daryn Colledge is expected to fill the left guard spot, with Nate Garner, Dallas Thomas, and rookie Billy Turner competing opposite him. The Dolphins' starting tackles are Branden Albert and first-round pick Ja'Wuan James.

Tue May 27 201412:29Dolphins using Shelley Smith at right guard
The Dolphins are using Shelley Smith at right guard.
Smith's strength is run blocking, so it makes sense to use him on the strong side next to rookie RT Ja'Wuan James. From left to right, Miami's projected first-team line is LT Branden Albert, LG Billy Turner, C Mike Pouncey, RG Smith, and RT James. Turner is trying to hold off Nate Garner and Dallas Thomas for snaps.

Fri Mar 14 201417:54Dolphins sign OG Shelley Smith for two years
Dolphins agreed to terms with OG Shelley Smith, formerly of the Rams, on a two-year, $5.5 million contract.
The deal includes $1.5 million guaranteed. It's a nice signing for a team moving on from the Richie Incognito/John Jerry "era," though Smith has made only eight career starts. Smith is a road grader in the run game, but needs to improve as a pass blocker. Going on 27, he'll get every opportunity to earn a starting job.

Free agent OG Shelley Smith left his Patriots visit without a deal and will now meet with the Dolphins.
Smith would be an outstanding fit in Miami because he's a zone-scheme lineman with difference-making run-blocking ability. He's also soon turning 27 and could be a building block on a team with glaring offensive line holes.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports four teams expressed interest in free agent OG Shelley Smith on Saturday.
Smith has appeared in 25 games, starting eight, the past two seasons. He played 371 offensive snaps in 2013 and received glowing reviews for his run-blocking. Sat Jun 15 201313:51Smith, Williams rotating as Rams' top LG
Shelley Smith and Chris Williams rotated as the first-team left guard at Rams OTAs.
Smith started six games -- four at left guard and two at right guard -- for the Rams last season, and he and Williams rotated in place of an injured Harvey Dahl at right guard for the final three weeks in 2012. Texans coach Gary Kubiak said that sixth-round pick Shelley Smith can play either guard or center.
Smith played guard at Colorado State and has good size at 6'4/300. Continuity along the Texans' offensive line helped to keep Matt Schaub upright last season and Smith will be a backup if he makes the team.
