Sun Jun 15 201422:06Bernadeau preparing to be a backup
Cowboys OG Mackenzy Bernadeau has taken snaps at left guard and center during OTAs.
Bernadeau started 11 games at right guard last season, but the Cowboys' selection of G Zack Martin has forced Bernadeau into a reserve role. He is working at center and left guard so he can be prepared to play if needed at any position along the interior line. The Cowboys' offensive line is penciled in as LT Tyron Smith, LG Ronald Leary, C Travis Frederick, RG Zack Martin and RT Doug Free.

Tue May 27 201413:19Bernadeau working as Cowboys' 1st-team LG
Mackenzy Bernadeau opened OTAs as the Cowboys' first-team left guard Tuesday.
Ronald Leary started all 16 games at left guard last season. Bernadeau was the right guard. After the Cowboys drafted Zack Martin with the 16th pick, Bernadeau and Leary appear to be competing for the left-guard job. Bernadeau was a top-seven run-blocking right guard in 2013, per Pro Football Focus. Leary was a bit overwhelmed in his first year as a full-time starter.

Tue May 20 201408:49Mackenzy Bernadeau odd man out in Dallas
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau is expected to be the odd man out after the team drafted Zack Martin in the first round.
Bernadeau had a strong 2013 season but took a $1.15 million pay cut in March and will now head to the bench. He can play all five positions on the line in a pinch, so he becomes a key reserve. The Cowboys projected starting front five: LT Tyron Smith, LG Ronald Leary, C Travis Frederick, RG Martin, RT Doug Free.

Mon Mar 10 201411:00Mackenzy Bernadeau accepts pay cut
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau has accepted a $1.15 million pay cut for 2014.
We're not sure why Bernadeau had to take a pay cut after arguably the best season of his underwhelming career, but it helps Dallas' cap situation. He's now owed a $1.1 million guaranteed salary in 2014, plus a $500,000 roster bonus. Bernadeau is expected to open the season as the Cowboys' starting right guard.

Tue Jul 23 201319:02Mackenzy Bernadeau placed on active/PUP
Cowboys placed RG Mackenzy Bernadeau (shoulder, hamstring) on the active/PUP list.
Bernadeau missed all offseason while recovering from shoulder surgery and failed his conditioning test after suffering a hamstring injury on the first day of camp. Coming off a shaky 2012, his starting job is open to competition. The Cowboys haven't ruled out moving first-round pick Travis Frederick to right guard.

Mon Jun 10 201312:22Bernadeau (shoulder) still healing up
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau (shoulder surgery) won't participate in this week's minicamp, but is expected to be ready for training camp.
"I'm feeling good, but it's just not football ready yet," Bernadeau said. "I don't want to go out there not being able to compete at 100 percent. ... The first day of (training) camp, I'll be ready to go." Bernadeau is expected to face competition for his starting job from Phil Costa and Ronald Leary.

Wed May 15 201320:36Bernadeau unsure if he'll take part in OTAs
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau (shoulder surgery) is unsure if he'll participate in OTAs.
Bernadeau underwent shoulder surgery earlier in the offseason. Even if he misses OTAs, he should be ready to roll for training camp. The 27-year-old's roster spot is likely safe after he restructured his deal, but he'll likely face some competition for the starting right guard spot from Phil Costa and Ronald Leary.

Tue Mar 19 201317:56Bernadeau recovering from shoulder surgery
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau recently underwent shoulder surgery, but is expected to be "fine" for training camp.
The ailment didn't cost Bernadeau any time in 2012, but it's his third surgery in two years. Bernadeau underwent hip and knee operations last offseason. Bernadeau is coming off a mediocre campaign, but held his own as a run blocker. The Cowboys don't have any better options at right guard.

Wed Jan 30 201322:53Cowboys RG Bernadeau triggers $500K bonus
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau triggered an escalator in his contract, raising his 2013 salary from $1.75 million to $2.25 million.
Bernadeau signed a four-year deal with the Cowboys last offseason as a free agent, and he went on to start all 16 games for the first time in his career. Bernadeau, 27, out of small Bentley College, has the ability to play both center and guard. He's much better in the run game than as a pass protector.

Sat Aug 4 201222:30Cowboys to give Bernadeau reps at center
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip surgery, knee surgery) is expected to see playing time at center when he returns to practice.
Bernadeau was recently removed from the active/PUP list, and is among the candidates to replace Phil Costa, who's struggled in training camp. Moving Bernadeau to center would allow the Cowboys to give Ronald Leary an extended look at right guard.

Sat Aug 4 201216:10Mackenzy Bernadeau cleared to practice
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip surgery, knee surgery) has been cleared to practice.
He'll come off the active/PUP list. Bernadeau's status was in the air following May hip surgery and a July knee scope, but barring a setback, he should be ready for Week 1. Although Bernadeau made just one start in 15 games for the Panthers last season, the Cowboys gave him a four-year, $11 million deal on the second day of free agency.

Sun Jul 29 201219:05Bernadeau now recovering from knee scope
Already recovering from surgery to repair a tear in his right hip, Cowboys OG Mackenzy Bernadeau recently underwent "minor" knee surgery.
The Cowboys signed Bernadeau to a four-year, $11 million deal in March with designs on starting him at right guard. He opened camp on the PUP list and isn't going to be in position to compete for that job. It's fair to wonder if Dallas signed damaged goods. The Cowboys may turn to UDFA Ronald Leary at right guard.

Thu Jun 7 201214:17Bernadeau targeting mid-training camp return
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip surgery) is targeting a return by the middle of training camp.
Bernadeau has yet to begin running, but he has graduated to light workouts and upper-body exercises. Last year's fourth-rounder, David Arkin, is picking up first-team reps in the mean time.

Mon May 21 201208:25Bernadeau no longer in line for snaps at C?
Coach Jason Garrett hints RG Mackenzy Bernadeau's hip operation decreases the chances the Cowboys will give him snaps at center.
"We'd be less inclined to play him at a couple of different spots initially because he's losing his off-season work,'' Garrett said. "He just has to be aggressive in his rehab and get back as quickly as he can." Bernadeau will miss the remainder of Cowboys OTAs, and may not be ready for the beginning of camp. Given a four-year, $11 million deal in March, Bernadeau is being paid like a starter, but whether he remains penciled in at right guard will depend on how quickly he's able to come back.

Wed May 16 201212:28Cowboys RG Bernadeau undergoes hip surgery
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau reportedly underwent surgery over the weekend to repair a tear in his right hip.
The Cowboys hope to have him back in 10-12 weeks, leaving his status in question for the beginning of training camp. Bernadeau had been penciled in at right guard. The team has plenty of question marks on the interior, with Nate Livings, David Arkin, Bill Nagy, Kevin Kowalski and even undrafted rookie Ronald Leary vying for playing time.

Fri May 4 201218:14Bernadeau only has a hip flexor injury
The injury that has sidelined RG Mackenzy Bernadeau for the Cowboys' offseason conditioning program is a hip flexor.
The team doesn't believe the injury is serious, and is hopeful Bernadeau will be ready for OTAs in a few weeks. "We want to make sure he's healthy before we put him out there," said coach Jason Garrett. OL coach Bill Callahan plans to try Bernadeau at both right guard and center when Dallas opens training camp.

Fri May 4 201215:51Cowboys OG Bernadeau nursing hip injury
Cowboys RG Mackenzy Bernadeau has been sidelined from offseason activities due to a hip injury.
Bernadeau barely played in Carolina last season, so he shouldn't be nursing an injury incurred in 2011. The extent of his hip problem is unclear. The Cowboys have some concerns on the interior offensive line with both guard spots in transition and underwhelming C Phil Costa coming back. Bernadeau signed a four-year, $11 million deal in March to be the new starting right guard.

Wed Mar 14 201214:27Cowboys meeting with OG Bernadeau
Free agent OG Mackenzy Bernadeau is visiting the Cowboys on Wednesday.
Bernadeau has 20 career starts in four years with the Panthers, but had fallen out of favor by late in the 2010 season. He would likely be ticketed for a backup job in Dallas.

Thu Oct 21 201014:04Bernadeau loses starting right guard job
Panthers RG Mackenzy Bernadeau revealed Thursday that he's lost his starting job.
Geoff Schwartz will slide inside with second-year player Garry Williams taking over at right tackle until Jeff Otah (knee) returns. The Panthers' O-Line has underperformed this season, and Bernadeau hasn't played as well as he did closing out last season. The switch brings a bigger body inside to help a struggling running game get on track.
