Mon Jun 2 201421:38Khalif Barnes penciled in at LG for Raiders
Khalif Barnes is penciled in as the Raiders' starting left guard.
The Raiders need to aim higher. Barnes started the final five games of the season at left guard in 2013 after manning left tackle the first 11 weeks. He fared decently as a pass blocker but was obliterated in the run game. If the season were to start today, the Raiders line from left to right would read: LT Donald Penn, LG Barnes, C Stefen Wisniewski, RG Austin Howard, and RT Menelik Watson.

Raiders re-signed LG Khalif Barnes.
Turning 32 in April, Barnes finished 2013 as Pro Football Focus' No. 58 guard among 81 qualifiers, and 78th in run blocking. He did draw positive marks as a pass blocker. Still, it's startling that the Raiders continue to settle for Barnes' mediocrity when he obviously isn't getting better at his age. Barnes figures to open 2014 as Oakland's starting left guard, with Stefen Wisniewski at center. Incumbent RG Mike Brisiel is tentatively expected to be released.

Barnes played guard and right tackle in camp. Pro Football Focus graded out Barnes 63rd among pass protecting tackles in 2012, among 77 qualifiers. In big-play IDP leagues, Colts ROLB Robert Mathis is a recommended start.

Sat May 26 201209:41Khalif Barnes likely to be right tackle
The Contra Costa Times expects Khalif Barnes to be the Raiders' starting right tackle.
Barnes wasn't a shoo-in to keep his job when he re-signed in March, but the Raiders didn't spend any draft picks on tackles. He should also benefit from the Raiders' transition to a zone-blocking scheme. Barnes will still face competition from 2011 third-rounder Joseph Barksdale.

Wed Mar 21 201214:02Raiders re-sign OT Khalif Barnes again
Raiders re-signed OT Khalif Barnes.
Jacksonville's former longtime left tackle started all 16 games on the right side in Oakland last year. The 30-year-old graded out poorly as both a run and pass blocker by Pro Football Focus, however. Barnes will face competition for the job in training camp, but Oakland's new zone-blocking scheme may help him.

Khalif Barnes has won the Raiders' starting right tackle job.
This looks like the weak link on Oakland's offensive line. Barnes hasn't started since 2008, when he fell apart in the second half of the season. Rookie Joseph Barksdale is a good bet to take over before the end of the season.

Raiders OT Khalif Barnes could get a chance to start at right tackle this season.
That would be a big promotion for Barnes, who was basically reduced to being an extra lineman in jumbo packages last season. Barnes will compete for the job with third-round pick Joseph Barksdale if the Raiders do not sign a veteran free agent, which they are expected to do.
