Minnesota has had a different starter at strong safety each of the past three seasons, but Sanford is looking to put an end to the trend. He started 13 games last season and appears to have a stranglehold on the spot entering camp. Sanford re-upped with the Vikings on a two-year, $5 million deal in March, but he's expected to face competition from Mistral Raymond and Robert Blanton.

The Vikings are expected to demote FS Jamarca Sanford into a special teams-only role in 2012.
Sanford "earned" the opportunity to start in 2011 after beating out Tyrell Johnson in camp, but he flopped in the secondary. Per ESPN 1500's Tom Pelissero, Sanford allowed 20 of the 31 passes thrown at him to be completed (64.5 percent) for 344 yards and eight touchdowns. He also missed too many open-field tackles. Jamarca Sanford is expected to be the Vikings' starting strong safety in Sunday's opener.
Sanford, a 2009 seventh-round pick, has apparently beaten out 2008 second-rounder Tyrell Johnson. He'll face a stiff test right out of the gate with the Vikings set to take on Philip Rivers and the Chargers. We wouldn't be surprised to see both players make starts at strong safety this season.

Wed Dec 22 201009:46Vikings hurting at safety
The Vikings could be without safties Madieu Williams (concussion), Jamarca Sanford (concussion) and Tyrell Johnson (knee) this weekend.
Sanford might have the best chance to play of the three, but he's yet to be officially cleared. The Vikes were down to only Husain Abdullah and Eric Frampton at safety Monday night, and interim coach Leslie Frazier said he was ready to start moving players from cornerback. Michael Vick should be able to pick apart the Vikings with ease in Week 16.

Sun Aug 22 201019:16Sanford to start over Tyrell Johnson
Jamarca Sanford will start Sunday night's preseason game at strong safety in place of Tyrell Johnson.
Johnson started the preseason opener, but his job has been opened to competition. Sanford and Johnson are similar players, both best suited to play in the box. This is arguably the weakest position on Minnesota's defense.

Jamarca Sanford is getting extensive reps with the first team at strong safety.
Sanford, a seventh-rounder in 2009, is pushing Tyrell Johnson right out of the gate. This has the makings of a pretty wide open competition in the Vikings' suddenly suspect secondary.
