It's the third straight game Venable finds himself on the bench, though it should be noted that the Padres faced two lefty starters during that stretch. Melvin Upton has picked up all three starts in center field while Venable was out, but he'll need to show far more consistency at the plate before Venable is completely pushed of the picture.

Venable is out of the lineup Friday.

He has gone hitless in his last three games, so Melvin Upton will get the nod in center field Friday. Venable may sit a couple times each week, but for now he should still be considered the Padres' primary center fielder.

Venable was activated from the paternity list Saturday.

While he has rejoined the roster, Melvin Upton will instead receive the start Saturday. However, his absence likely relates more to the left-handed Adam Morgan on the mound than anything, as he should retake the everyday duties in center field.

Venable cooled off a bit after recording seven base hits over his previous three contests. The outfielder is still hitting a healthy .333 on the month with six RBI, nine walks, 11 strikeouts and a home run.

Venable's two-run single tied the score at 3-3 in the seventh inning, taking starting pitcher Tyson Ross off the hook for the loss until the Padres ultimately surrendered the winning run in the ninth. Venable has produced five hits and two walks while slotting into the second spot in the order the last two games, which will likely allow him to stick around in that capacity for at least the next handful of contests.

Venable went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored against the Dodgers in Sunday.

The outfielder has been seeing added playing time lately with Wil Myers sidelined, but has yet to really seize the opportunity. Venable will likely see extra at-bats in the short term, but will return to a predominantly reserve role once the Padres get completely healthy.

Venable has seen most of the time in center field since Wil Myers (wrist) hit the shelf, but Saturday marks just his second time in the five-hole.
