RHP John Lackey, Sunday's starter in the series finale against the Phillies, is coming off a rough outing, as the 38-year-old veteran righthander gave up nine hits and six runs (all earned) in five innings in Cincinnati on Tuesday, though he avoided a decision in a game his team ultimately won 13-9. That broke a string of seven consecutive starts where he'd held his opponents to three earned runs or fewer, going 5-0 with a 3.29 ERA (38 1/3 innings, 14 ER) during that time -- including holding those same Reds to just one run on four hits. Cubs RHP John Lackey never likes coming out of a game, and he certainly wasn't happy when manager Joe Maddon lifted him after he allowed Paul Goldschmidt's solo homer in the sixth inning -- Arizona's second homer in as many innings. But the Cubs went on to win 8-3 -- Lackey's fifth straight victory -- and the 38-year-old was limited to 85 pitches. "He did his job, he had great stuff. And my message to him is by not throwing too many pitches now, he's going to be strong the rest of the year," Maddon said. "You've seen an uptick in velocity, better break on his breaking ball and part of that is by not beating him up." Lackey is 5-0 in six starts since the start of July.
