Ellis (knee) is considered doubtful for Tuesday's exhibition contest, Nate Taylor of the Indy Star reports.

Ellis is simply dealing with a sprained knee, and the Pacers won't take any chances with their starting shooting guard in the preseason.

Ellis (back) played 21 minutes in Tuesday's preseason tilt against the Pistons and scored 10 points (5-9 FG, 0-1 3Pt).

Ellis suffered a minor back injury during practice last week, but it failed to prevent him from suiting up in either of the Pacers' first two exhibitions. He'll serve as the team's starting shooting guard and secondary scoring option on offense after Paul George.

Ellis exited Thursday's practice early after his back stiffened up, Candace Buckner of the Indianapolis Star reports.

Ellis will likely require some more extensive treatment from the Pacers' training staff over the next few days, but the injury won't cloud his outlook for the start of the season. Expect him to be back at practice in quick fashion.

Ellis and the Pacers agreed to terms on a four-year deal worth $44 million, ESPN's Chris Broussard reports.

Ellis will move on after two years in Dallas, and he figures to step in as the Pacers' starting shooting guard. Last season, Ellis averaged 18.9 points and 4.1 assists while shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 28.5 percent from three. The fourth year of Ellis' deal is a player option, so he'll have the opportunity to again be a free agent in the summer of 2018.

Ellis will opt out of his current contract with the Mavericks, making him a free agent this summer, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports. Additionally, the Mavericks are not expected to re-sign Ellis to a revamped contract.

This decision has been rumored for many weeks and finally Ellis was able to make his intentions clear just a day before the 2015 NBA Draft takes place. The 29-year-old should provide an instant boost wherever he lands, with Indiana and Miami the reported early favorites to negotiate with Ellis. Regardless of where he ends up, Ellis will remain a viable option across all formats after completing his third-straight season where he played at least 80 games while averaging a minimum of 34 minutes per contest.

Dirk Nowitzki said Tuesday that he believes Ellis will opt out of the final year of his contract, Earl Sneed of Mavs.com reports.

While Nowitzki admitted that he hasn't spoken to Ellis about the decision, he said he expects the guard to opt out in hopes of landing a longer-term deal. Ellis holds a $9 million player option for next season, and rumors have swirled for several months now suggesting Ellis will, indeed, decline the option. It's unclear whether Ellis will look to return to Dallas, but the Mavericks would likely welcome him back at the right price. The 29-year-old averaged 18.9 points, 4.1 assists and 2. 4 rebounds in 2014-15 while shooting 44.5 percent from the floor.

Ellis finished his second season in Dallas leading the team in both scoring and assists with 18.9 points and 4.1 assists per game. He played in 80 regular season games and all five of Dallas' postseason contests.

Ellis has a player option for next season and will spend the next few weeks mulling over his decision. He resurrected his career in Dallas but could opt to look elsewhere in free agency. His final destination will determine his overall value for the 2015-16 season but he remains a streaky scorer who can fill a stat sheet.

Ellis injured his knee late in the fourth quarter during Tuesday's loss to the Rockets and was seen with a severe limp heading into the locker room after the game, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Ellis went down with a knee injury earlier in the fourth, but quickly came back into the game. He then was knocked to the floor right at the end of the game and again had to leave. The severity of the injury is uncertain, but he'll now have plenty of time to get healthy after being eliminated from the playoffs. Ellis finished Tuesday's game with a team-high of 25 points (11-26 FG, 2-7 3Pt, 1-1 FT), to go along with four rebounds, seven assists, four steals and a blocked shot in 42 minutes.
