Maurer improved his record to 6-2 after recording a lone out to close out the seventh inning of Saturday's victory over the Rockies.
Maurer's win illustrates the flaw in that statistic, as he actually failed to do the job the Padres had asked of him. Interim manager Pat Murphy called upon Maurer to relieve Tyson Ross with a runner on, two out, and the Padres holding a 3-2 lead, but the right-hander surrendered a game-tying RBI double to Wilin Rosario before ending the threat. Maurer then picked up the win when teammate Clint Barmes hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the frame to give the Padres the lead for good. Fluky record aside, Maurer has generally been magnificent in relief this season, as his 2.05 ERA and 0.97 WHIP would suggest.

Maurer moved to 3-0 with an extra innings victory Tuesday over Atlanta.
Maurer has been effective in a setup role this season, as his ERA fell to 1.86 following another clean inning. Maurer is living on control -- he has walked just six batters in 29 innings and he hasn't issued a walk since May 16th against Washington.
Wed Apr 22 201500:24Maurer picked up win Tuesday in 7-6 win over Rockies
Maurer picked up the win Tuesday in a 7-6 win over the Rockies. He pitched scoreless inning with one strike out.
Maurer hasn't been great this year, but this is his second consecutive scoreless outing. He has pitched in the Padres' last three games, so he may get a day off soon.
Fri Apr 10 201518:37Maurer recalled from Triple-A Tucson on Friday
Maurer was recalled from Triple-A Tucson on Friday, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The 24-year-old pitched lights out down the stretch in a relief role with Seattle last season and gave up just 10 hits and one walk in seven spring innings, but the team's acquisition of Craig Kimbrel put Maurer on the outside looking in to begin the season. However, Nick Vincent was needed for two innings Thursday after Ian Kennedy (hamstring) left early, so the team switched him out with a fresh arm in Maurer prior to Friday's game against the Giants. Look for Maurer to pitch in the middle innings for the time being.

Mauerer was optioned to Triple-A Tucscon, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Kevin Quackenbush and Maurer were sent to Triple-A after the Padres traded for Craig Kimbrel.

Maurer (back) threw a scoreless frame in his return Wednesday against Colorado. He allowed one hit and one walk and recorded one strikeout.
Maurer topped out at 97 on the gun when he struck out Ryan Casteel to end the inning. He hadn't appeared in a game since March 6 due to back soreness, but threw a side session Monday and took the mound Wednesday.
Tue Mar 17 201519:28Maurer (back) will get into Wednesday's game against Colorado
Maurer (back) will get into Wednesday's game against Colorado, Jeff Sanders of the Union-Tribune reports.
Maurer threw a side session Monday and it went well enough to where he'll be able to return to game action Wednesday. In his lone appearance this spring, Maurer allowed two hits and struck out one batter in one inning of work.

Maurer (back) will throw today and manager Bud Black expects him to return to game action Tuesday or Wednesday, U-T San Diego reports.
Maurer has been limited the past week with a sore back after appearing in just one Cactus League game. It's not believed to be a particularly serious issue, with the team airing on the side of caution, so the 24-year-old should be able to return to game action shortly with no restrictions.
Tue Dec 30 201418:08Brandon Maurer: Traded To Padres
Maurer was traded to the Padres on Tuesday in exchange for Seth Smith, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports.
Back in 2012, Maurer was thought of in a similar light as Taijuan Walker and James Paxton in the Mariners' farm system, but he has since imploded as a starter and worked primarily as a relief pitcher last season. He has a career 6.62 ERA in 102 innings as a big league starter and a 3.75 ERA with a much better K-rate in 57.2 innings as a reliever. However, the Padres reportedly think he has the potential to return to being a starter, hence the willingness to trade Smith, who was coming off a career year. That said, the Padres have a lot of options in the rotation, so Maurer would have to earn that chance. He may be sent to Triple-A at the outset of 2015 to work on being a starter again, with a chance to join the rotation at some point next season. At worst he will be a solid middle innings reliever in San Diego.
Sun Aug 3 201414:08Maurer tossed another scoreless inning for Mariners on Saturday,...
Maurer tossed another scoreless inning for the Mariners on Saturday, lowering his ERA out of the bullpen this season to 0.50.
Earlier this season, Maurer was hammered by the opposition as a starter, posting a 7.52 ERA in seven starts. Since moving to the bullpen, he's been outstanding, compiling a 22:4 K:BB over 18 innings and limiting opposing hitters to a .156/.206/.203 line. If an injury were to befall closer Fernando Rodney, Maurer would be a very intriguing option as a potential replacement given his dominance with the role change.
Sun Jul 27 201411:30Brandon Maurer dominating in relief role
Brandon Maurer has tossed 15 scoreless relief innings since being recalled on June 25, allowing just six hits while posting a 17/2 K/BB ratio.
Maurer held a 7.52 ERA while allowing 43 hits and 14 walks in 32 1/3 innings as a starter, but it appears that he's found a home in the bullpen. "I'm having fun," he said. "Earlier in the season, I wasn't having fun." The 24-year-old has worked his way into a late-inning role and looks to be a key piece of the Mariners' bullpen down the stretch. "He has less to think about as a reliever," manager Lloyd McClendon suggested. "He just goes after guys. His stuff is plenty good enough. His stuff has never been an issue."

Tue Jun 3 201419:13Brandon Maurer to work in relief at Triple-A
Brandon Maurer will be used as a reliever at Triple-A Tacoma.
Many have felt that Maurer would ultimately be a better fit as a reliever, and the Mariners have decided to make the move with the right-hander. The 23-year-old holds a career 6.62 ERA across 122 1/3 innings but could wind up being a weapon out of the bullpen.

Fri May 30 201420:47Mariners option Brandon Maurer to Triple-A
Mariners optioned RHP Brandon Maurer to Triple-A Tacoma.
The struggling right-hander is heading for an MRI exam on his back and could be looking at a trip to the disabled list as well. No word yet as to who will replace him in the Mariners rotation, but Erasmo Ramirez is a strong candidate.

Fri May 30 201419:08Brandon Maurer (back) heading for MRI exam
Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon confirmed Friday that Brandon Maurer was heading for an MRI exam on his ailing back.
The back has been a nagging issue for the young right-hander since early in spring training, and he has posted a troublesome 7.52 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 32 1/3 innings on the season. He shouldn't be trusted in any fantasy format at this point.

Fri May 30 201401:34Maurer Gives Up 5 ER in 4 IP
Brandon Maurer was roughed up to the tune of five runs in four innings in Thursday night's game against the Angels.
Eric Aybar's three-run homer in the fourth was the big blow. It's been a rough season for Maurer, whose ERA now sits at an unsightly 7.52. He's gone fewer than five innings in all but one of his starts, and in that 7.1 inning start against the Royals he gave up 14 hits and six runs.

Sun May 25 201401:49Brandon Maurer gets hit hard by Astros
Brandon Maurer was tagged for six runs in 4 1/3 innings by the Astros on Saturday night.
Most of the tagging was done by George Springer, who hit both homers Maurer surrendered. Maurer has demonstrated good velocity, but with just two major league pitches at his disposal, it's still pretty iffy whether he'll last as a major league starter. We don't see why he was chosen over Erasmo Ramirez in the first place.

Sat May 17 201413:41Mariners to skip Brandon Maurer's next start
Greg Johns of MLB.com reports that the Mariners plan to skip Brandon Maurer the next time through the rotation.
That would mean that Maurer's next start wouldn't come until Saturday where he'd do battle against the Astros at home. Chris Young is the clear loser in this situation from a fantasy perspective, as he'll now pitch against the Rangers in Texas on Wednesday instead of drawing the lowly Astros in Seattle.

Wed May 14 201420:08Maurer walks four over 3 2/3 innings vs. Rays
Brandon Maurer had another abbreviated start on Wednesday, allowing two runs while walking four over 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Rays.
Maurer needed 84 pitches to get through his 3 2/3 innings. The Rays only managed two hits off Maurer, but he walked in a run and allowed another to score on a wild pitch. It's the third time in five starts that Maurer hasn't made it through five innings. His next start will come Wednesday at the Rangers.

Sat May 10 201401:36Brandon Maurer gives up 14 hits in loss
Brandon Maurer gave up 14 hits -- all of them singles -- and allowed six runs -- four earned -- in 7 1/3 innings Friday against the Royals.
It's a sign of how the Mariners felt about his performance that he was allowed to pitch 7 1/3 innings; maybe he wasn't quite "good" but nor was he all that bad. Unfortunately, the Mariners defense just isn't a strong suit, especially with Michael Saunders in center and Willie Bloomquist at third. Maurer isn't an option in AL-only leagues.
