Sat Oct 2 201001:18Ely hammered in loss to D-Backs
John Ely was knocked around for seven runs over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday night.
Not exactly the best audition for next year's rotation. Starting in place of Clayton Kershaw, Ely gave up seven hits -- including a two-run homer by Adam LaRoche -- while striking out three and walking three. We saw the young right-hander enjoy some surprising success upon his initial call-up in late-April, but he'll finish the year at 4-10 with 5.33 ERA over 18 starts. He'll have an uphill battle to impress new skipper Don Mattingly next spring.
Mon Sep 6 201017:58Dodgers recall John Ely from Triple-A
Dodgers recall RHP John Ely from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Ely was quite a nice surprise early in the season, but was sent back to the minors once his luck began to run out. He has a 4.63 ERA in 14 starts with the Dodgers this season and a 6.22 ERA over 13 starts with the Isotopes. This time, he'll pitch out of the bullpen.
Sun Jul 11 201017:47Dodgers option SP Ely to Triple-A
Dodgers optioned SP John Ely to Triple-A Albuquerque.
This is most likely just a roster flexibility issue, as Ely is still scheduled to pitch in about nine days and the team could use a reliever in the meantime. On the other hand, Ely has not been pitching that well and has a low ceiling with his strikeout rate. Also, Torre has been talking about improving the rotation by the trade deadline, which is worth noting.

Sun Jul 11 201008:56Ely won't be bumped from rotation... yet
John Ely will take his next turn in the rotation despite another rough outing Saturday.
Ely was pummeled for six runs over 2 1/3 innings Saturday after lasting just 2 2/3 frames in his previous start. He also had a stretch in the middle of June where he allowed 15 runs over three starts. "He's still scheduled," manager Joe Torre said. "We're looking to try to help ourselves by the end of the month with our trade deadline, but you know as well as I do there's no guarantee that that's going to happen."

Sat Jul 10 201019:18Ely can't make it out of third vs. Cubs
John Ely was hammered for six runs over 2 1/3 innings in a loss to the Cubs on Saturday.
Ely gave up three runs in the second inning and three runs in the third before being chased from the game. He hasn't completed the third inning in either of his last two starts. His ERA has hopped from 3.62 to 4.63 in the process. We're not crazy about him in mixed leagues, especially lately, but he's obviously been quite a nice surprise for the Dodgers during the first half.
Tue Jul 6 201000:29Ely blasted in loss to Marlins
John Ely retired only eight batters Monday, allowing six runs (five earned) over 2 2/3 innings in the loss to the Marlins.
He fell to 4-6 after the rough outing and saw his ERA rise to 4.07. Ely was coming off two straight terrific starts after three straight poor ones, so he has been up and down lately. Still, the Dodgers have to be mighty pleased with what he's given them thus far. Ely has a nice matchup on Saturday against the Cubs.
Wed Jun 30 201001:37Dodgers' Ely earns win over Giants
John Ely limited the Giants to a run over seven innings to earn a victory on Tuesday.
The win was his first since May 22. Ely has followed three straight poor outings with a couple of nice seven-inning starts back-to-back. We wouldn't be in any rush to pick him back up in mixed leagues, but he should be pretty solid.
Thu Jun 24 201000:51Dodgers' Ely solid in defeat
John Ely bounced back from three straight poor starts to hold the Angels to two runs -- one earned -- and three hits over seven innings Wednesday.
The Dodgers scored just once, so Ely fell to 3-5 on the season. Still, it was an encouraging performance. At least now the Dodgers know he hasn't totally lost it.
Thu Jun 17 201015:43Dodgers' Ely roughed up by Reds
John Ely surrendered seven runs in 4 2/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Reds.
As we said last week, it's time to dump Ely in mixed leagues. He's a reasonable bet in NL-only leagues the rest of the way, but hitters have started to figure him out. Bronson Arroyo, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips all took him deep today. He's given up six homers in his last three starts after allowing none in his first seven.
Sun Jun 13 201003:01Dodgers' Ely takes loss to Angels
John Ely gave up four runs over five innings in a second straight start Saturday versus the Angels.
It looks like the magic is starting to wear off a bit, as Ely has allowed 15 hits and walked five over 10 innings in his last two starts. He should remain an asset in NL-only leagues, but mixed leaguers might want to move on, particularly since he'll be facing more AL teams in his next two starts.
Sun Jun 6 201019:59Ely delivers shortest big-league start yet
John Ely yielded four runs on nine hits over five innings on Sunday.
Thus ends a streak of six straight starts in which Ely had lowered his ERA after a rocky MLB debut, but I'm sure the rookie is plenty satisfied with his 3.00 mark through eight big-league starts, particularly since the Dodgers ended up winning today.
Wed Jun 2 201001:41Dodgers' Ely shuts down Diamondbacks
John Ely pitched two-hit ball over seven scoreless innings Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
Dan Haren matched zeroes with him, so Ely wasn't involved in the decision. Incredibly, he's now 0-1 in the three starts in which he's allowed zero or one runs for the Dodgers. Fortunately, he's 3-0 when he's given up two runs.
Thu May 27 201017:02Dodgers' Ely sharp in loss
John Ely took a loss Thursday despite limiting the Cubs to one run in 7 1/3 innings.
Ely deserved better, but the Dodgers couldn't muster a single extra-base hit against Ted Lilly or the Cubs bullpen. As a result, the 24-year-old is now 3-2 wit a 3.00 ERA.
Sat May 22 201022:23Dodgers' Ely goes to 3-1
John Ely moved to 3-1 by limiting the Tigers to two runs in six innings on Saturday.
That's the John Ely special. In all four starts since he returned to the majors, he's pitched between six and seven innings and allowed one or two runs. He did, however, walk one batter tonight. It's the first base on balls he's issued since his callup.
Tue May 18 201001:23Dodgers' Ely fans eight in win over Astros
John Ely pitched seven innings of two-run ball and struck out eight in a win over the Astros on Monday.
One just doesn't see rookies come up with this kind of command. In his last three starts, Ely has a 21/0 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings. We're skeptical that he'll last as a mixed-league starting pitcher, but by all means, ride him until he starts to get hit.
Wed May 12 201001:44Dodgers' Ely earns first victory
John Ely limited the Diamondbacks to two runs in six innings Tuesday to earn his first major league victory.
The Dodgers undid their mistake in sending down Ely last week by creating a phantom injury for Charlie Haeger. With the way Ely has pitched, it'd be no surprise to see him stick in the rotation for the rest of the season. He has some value in NL-only leagues.
Mon May 10 201017:58Dodgers call up Ely from Triple-A
Dodgers recalled RHP John Ely from Triple-A Albuquerque.
As expected, Ely will start against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The 23-year-old allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings against the Brewers last Thursday night. He didn't deserve to be sent down in the first place.
Mon May 10 201013:27Ely to start for Dodgers on Tuesday vs. AZ
The Dodgers will recall rookie right-hander John Ely on Tuesday to start against the Diamondbacks.
Ely limited the Brewers to one run over 6 2/3 innings in his second career major league start last week, but was shipped back to the minors so that the Dodgers could add a fresh arm to their bullpen. The 23-year-old owns some rather impressive minor league marks over the last two seasons and is worth trying in NL-only leagues against Arizona on Tuesday.

Fri May 7 201023:02Dodgers send Ely back to Triple-A
Dodgers optioned RHP John Ely to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Pretty nice reward after tossing 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball on Thursday night. The demotion of Ely means that Carlos Monasterios is the odds-on favorite to start against the Diamondbacks next Tuesday.
Fri May 7 201001:57Dodgers' Ely fans seven Brewers
John Ely handcuffed the Brewers in his second career start, allowing just one run in 6 2/3 innings.
He struck out seven and walked none. Ely was more impressive than his 7.50 ERA suggested in his major league debut last week against the Mets. He might have a little fantasy value while he continues to occupy a slot in the Dodger rotation.
