Tue Jan 21 201415:08Report: Phillies bring back Bobby Abreu
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies have agreed to a deal with Bobby Abreu.
Abreu, who turns 40 in March, will presumably receive a minor league deal with a spring training invite. He didn't play professionally last season, but the Phillies were encouraged by his performance in the Venezuelan Winter League and view him as a potential left-handed bench bat.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com hears from multiple baseball sources that the Phillies are "sniffing around" on Bobby Abreu.
Abreu has impressed during his time in the Venezuelan Winter League and the Phillies are now considering him as a lefty bench bat. Of course, the soon-to-be 40-year-old previously played with Philadelphia from 1997-2006. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. confirmed that the club has scouted him and have received "decent" reports.

Tue Jan 7 201417:54CLE 'not all that interested' in Bobby Abreu
According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians are "not all that interested" in Bobby Abreu.
Tony Lastoria of IndiansBaseballInsider.com said Monday that the Tribe were courting Abreu, but FOX Sports' Jon Morosi tweeted Tuesday afternoon that an offer hadn't yet been made and now Hoynes is reporting that there's not even interest. Abreu, 39, did not play affiliated ball in 2013 and will likely continue to struggle to find a landing a spot for 2014.

Mon Jan 6 201420:00Bobby Abreu drawing interest from Cleveland
Tony Lastoria of IndiansBaseballInsider.com reports that the Indians are "very interested" in signing Bobby Abreu.
Lastoria says the Tribe has been monitoring Abreu in the Venezuelan Winter League and discussed a possible deal with him. However, it remains to be seen if they'll still have interest (or Abreu will have interest in them) following the signing of Jeff Francoeur. The 39-year-old Abreu didn't play anywhere in 2013 but is batting .322/.416/.461 in Winter Ball.

Sun Jan 5 201421:57Abreu mashing in Venezuelan winter league
Bobby Abreu blasted a grand slam on Saturday, leading Caracas to an 11-1 victory over La Guaira in playoff action in the Venezuelan Winter League.
The blast was Abreus' third in three postseason games to go along with eight RBI. In 50 games during the season, the 39-year-old outfielder slashed .322/.416/.461 with three homers and 28 RBI. He's hoping to parlay his winter league success into a contract offer, as he believes he has a lot to offer and can still help a major league team. He was unable to land an offer last offseason, and will likely have to settle for a minor league deal if a team is willing to take a chance on him.

Tue Apr 16 201314:17Bobby Abreu hopes to make comeback in 2014
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Bobby Abreu plans to play winter ball in hopes of making a comeback in 2014.
Abreu failed to land a contract this winter, so he is currently focusing on business ventures in his native Venezuela, but he's not ready to turn the page on his playing career. "Bobby still thinks he has something left to offer," said Abreu's agent, Peter Greenberg. "He still thinks he can help somebody, and he has some personal milestones that would probably be nice to cross." Abreu, who turns 40 next March, needs 13 home runs and one stolen base to be a 300-400 man for his career. He might be hard-pressed to get that opportunity.

Sat Feb 2 201312:43Heyman: Orioles wouldn't be bad fit for Abreu
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman writes that the Orioles "wouldn't be a bad fit" for Bobby Abreu.
Abreu has struggled to attract interest in free agency this offseason and it remains to be seen if any team is willing to take a chance on him. The 39-year-old batted just .242/.350/.342 in 257 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Angels this past season, and is doubtful to make an impact even if he manages to land a semi-regular role in 2013.

Fri Feb 1 201309:15Marlins, Rays looking at Bobby Abreu
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman lists the Marlins and Rays as "a couple possibilities" for Bobby Abreu.
Abreu has struggled to attract interest on the open market after batting just .242/.350/.342 in 257 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Angels this past season. He wouldn't be a bad guy to give a minor league deal to, though, and there could be playing time available both in Miami and Tampa.

Sun Jan 27 201320:30Red Sox unlikely to pursue Bobby Abreu
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe confirms that the Red Sox are unlikely to pursue free agent Bobby Abreu.
The Red Sox were among the teams that watched Abreu workout in his native Venezuela last month, but Cafardo expects them to look elsewhere for a left-handed hitting outfielder to split time with Jonny Gomes. After batting just .242/.350/.342 in 257 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Angels this past season, Abreu has struggled to attract interest on the open market. It's fair to wonder if any team is still willing to take a chance on him at this point. The Miami Herald reported earlier in the week that Abreu "would love" to play for the Marlins.

Mon Jan 21 201308:31Bobby Abreu interested in playing for Marlins
The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reports that Bobby Abreu's agent has told the Marlins that his client "would love" to play in Miami.
Whether the interest is reciprocal remains to be seen, but Abreu would certainly have a better opportunity at playing time with the Marlins than he would most other places. The 38-year-old held a workout in his native Venezuela last month, with the Red Sox known to have been one of the teams that watched him. However, Boston doesn't plan to sign the veteran outfielder.

Tue Jan 1 201312:44BoSox downplay interest in Bobby Abreu
According to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox observed Bobby Abreu's workout in Venezuela as "background work" and "nothing more than a scouting assignment."
Alex Speier of WEEI.com was first to report news of the Red Sox attending the workout. Lauber speculates that Abreu could make sense as a left-handed-hitting outfielder to split time in left field with Jonny Gomes, but it appears unlikely the Red Sox will sign him.

Mon Dec 31 201216:03Report: Bobby Abreu worked out for Red Sox
According to Alex Speier of WEEI.com, Bobby Abreu worked out for the Red Sox in Venezuela.
The Red Sox had Abreu go through drills at first base during the workout, though it was likely just a matter of due diligence. The 38-year-old has never played first base during his 17-year major league career. He'll likely have to settle for a minor league deal after batting just .242 with three homers and a .693 OPS in 257 plate appearances in 2012.

Sun Aug 12 201213:27Bobby Abreu goes on Triple-A DL
Bobby Abreu has been placed on Triple-A Albuquerque's disabled list with a sprained ankle.
It's likely just a day-to-day ailment for the veteran. Abreu accepted a minor league assignment last week and will return to the Dodgers next month, assuming he's healthy.

Thu Aug 9 201215:49Abreu accepts Triple-A assignment with LAD
Dodgers sent OF Bobby Abreu outright to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Abreu cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will attempt to continue his career with the Dodgers. It's highly likely that he'll be back later this season, but in nothing more than a reserve role.

Wed Aug 1 201213:40Dodgers designate Bobby Abreu for assignment
Dodgers designated OF Bobby Abreu for assignment.
The move clears a spot for the newly-acquired Shane Victorino, who will take over the starting left field job. Abreu, 38, is hitting just .246/.347/.340 with two home runs and a .687 OPS in 236 plate appearances this season. While he's clearly on the decline, he figures to draw some interest as a lefty bench bat.

Thu Jul 12 201222:25Abreu could bat out of leadoff spot
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Thursday that Bobby Abreu could be used out of the leadoff spot.
It's actually not a terrible idea. While Abreu obviously doesn't have the speed of Dee Gordon (thumb), he has a .396 on-base percentage for his career and is getting on base at a .356 clip this year. With his power on the decline, he'll likely be more useful batting leadoff than the middle of the order.

Sat Jun 23 201201:41Bobby Abreu hits three-run homer
Bobby Abreu punished his former team by hitting a three-run homer Friday against the Angels.
The Angels won anyway, so they were probably OK with the homer. While Abreu is hitting .297 with a .409 OBP in 111 at-bats for the Dodgers, the Angels didn't really have the at-bats for him anyway.

Fri May 18 201201:12Abreu has two hits in win over Padres
Bobby Abreu went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple, a double and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Padres.
Abreu is now hitting .314 (11-for-35) with five doubles, one triple and five RBI since signing with the Dodgers earlier this month. While the 38-year-old is nearing the end of his career, he should continue to be relevant in deeper mixed leagues while Matt Kemp and Juan Rivera are sidelined with hamstring injuries.

Sun May 13 201220:32Bobby Abreu leads Dodgers to win
Bobby Abreu went 1-for-2 with a three-run double in Sunday's win over the Rockies.
Abreu came on in left field after Matt Kemp (hamstring) left. The 38-year-old is off to a hot start with the Dodgers, hitting .318 with four RBI in his first nine games. There's not much upside here, but he'll see regular playing time if Kemp misses time.
