NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball plans to unilaterally issue a 60-game schedule for its shortest season since 1878 after the players' association rejected a negotiated deal of the same length, putting the sport on track for a combative and possibly unhappy return to the field amid the coronavirus pandemic.Six days after baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and union head Tony Clark negotiated to expand the playoffs from 10 teams to 16, widen use of the designated hitter to National League games and introduce an experiment to start extra innings with a runner on second base, the deal was rejected by the Major League Baseball Players Association's executive board in a 33-5 vote.“Needless to say, we are disappointed by this development,” MLB said in a statement. “The framework provided an opportunity for MLB and its players to work together to confront the difficulties and challenges presented by the pandemic. It gave our fans the chance to see an exciting new postseason format. And, it... [More]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Albert Pujols will pay the salaries of the Los Angeles Angels' furloughed employees in his native Dominican Republic for five months, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday because the veteran slugger didn't publicly announce his commitment to give roughly $180,000 to cover the salaries. The strict budget cuts made by Angels owner Arte Moreno during the coronavirus pandemic have included extensive furloughs for scouts, player development staff and minor league employees. The furloughs also included most of the staff of their Dominican academy in Boca Chica. The Angels established an employee assistance fund earlier during the pandemic to help employees, but don't have a timetable for reestablishing their minor league and development staffs. The 40-year-old Pujols is in the ninth season of a 10-year, $240 million contract with the Angels, who signed him in late 2011 after he won three NL MVP awards and two World Series titles with the St. Louis Cardinals. The first baseman was born and raised in Santo Domingo before moving to the U.S. as a teenager.Pujols is sixth in major league history with 656 career homers, and he got his 3,000th hit in 2018. He is likely to be the oldest player on a major league roster if the season begins. The Los Angeles Times first reported Pujols’ decision.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

PHOENIX (AP) — John Stuper remembers some of the first advice he got from veterans when he joined the St. Louis Cardinals as a rookie pitcher in 1982: Don't get too high or too low during Major League Baseball's grueling 162-game schedule or you'll go insane. Now as a veteran college coach with the Yale Bulldogs, the 63-year-old is the one who has some advice."A college baseball season is totally different," Stuper said. "It's a sprint.”If MLB and the players' union can come to an agreement and partially save the season amid the coronavirus pandemic, the 60- to 70-game schedule will look somewhat similar to a college schedule. NCAA Division I teams can play a maximum of 56 games during the regular season and routinely top 70 games if they make the postseason and advance to the College World Series. Some fans might miss the leisurely pace of baseball's usual summer grind, but a condensed schedule could bring perks. NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says there might be no major league games this year after a breakdown in talks between teams and the players' union on how to split up money in a season delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. The league also revealed several players on big league rosters have tested positive for COVID-19. Two days after union head Tony Clark declared additional negotiations futile, Manfred reversed his position of last week when he said he was “100%” certain the 2020 season would start.Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem sent a seven-page letter to players' association chief negotiator Bruce Meyer asking the union whether it will waive the threat of legal action and tell MLB to announce a spring training report date and a regular-season schedule. These were just the latest escalating volleys in a sport viewing disagreements over starting the season as a preliminary battle ahead of bargaining to replace the labor contract that expires on Dec. 1, 2021. “It’s just a... DETROIT (AP) — An ace right-hander and a slugging corner infielder. It's a combination that's worked before for the Detroit Tigers — and now they have a couple of prospects they hope can bring competitive baseball back to the Motor City.Detroit drafted Arizona State first baseman Spencer Torkelson with the top pick in Wednesday night's draft, although the Tigers plan to try him across the diamond at third base. It was the second time in three years Detroit had the No. 1 pick. The Tigers took pitcher Casey Mize in 2018.The team's most recent period of success was led by Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera, and if this new duo is anything close to that one, Detroit will have a lot to look forward to.“Pressure's a privilege,” Torkelson said in a video conference Thursday. “That pressure, whatever you want to call it, it drives me. It makes me work harder. I don't let it faze me. It's a privilege to be in the position I'm in.”The Tigers could use a young hitter like Torkelson, since their top... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says there is a “100%” chance of big league ball this year.Major League Baseball will make another proposal to start the pandemic-delayed season in empty ballparks, but Manfred vowed Wednesday to unilaterally order opening day if an agreement is not reached.“I can tell you unequivocally we are going to play Major League Baseball this year,” he said.Manfred insisted the chance of playing this year was “100%.”The players’ association made its second proposal Tuesday, asking for an 89-game regular season and 100% of prorated salaries. MLB’s plan a day earlier was for a 76-game season, would guarantee 50% of prorated salaries and hinge 25% in additional money on the postseason’s completion.“It will be a another significant move in the players’ direction in terms of the salary issue that has kept us apart,” Manfred said during an interview with ESPN before that network’s coverage of the amateur draft.“We're hopeful that it will produce reciprocal... Maybe this might get Mike Trout back into the playoffs.Major League Baseball is tossing around plenty of ideas these days to start up a shortened season delayed by the coronavirus pandemic — a DH in the National League, neutral-site games, personal rosin bags for pitchers. Now comes a proposal that would truly upend the sport: up to 16 playoff teams.More than half the 30 clubs advance. No need to finish over .500, probably. In this skewed season, heck, perhaps 35 wins in 76 games or so could be enough to play into October. What’s next, the Winnipeg Jets in the World Series?OK, we’ve heard this before, that an extra wild-card team or two represents the NHL-ization of baseball. But to some, an expansion from 10 playoff clubs to 16 would mean the end of civilization as we know it.Longtime manager Jim Riggleman chuckled at that notion.“I think that whatever they come up with this year to play, anything goes. That’s fine,” he said. “But moving forward into next year, I wouldn’t be in favor of... [More]

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Chris Archer won't pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2020, and his time with the club may be over. The 31-year-old right-hander had surgery Tuesday in St. Louis with Dr. Robert Thompson to relieve symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome. Archer remained on a throwing program when he went home but symptoms continued to linger. “What made it most challenging for Chris, he didn’t feel the symptoms immediately after throwing,” Tomczyk said. “It was hours afterward. It was the next day."Tomczyk estimated Archer will need six-to-eight months of rehabilitation. Archer's absence this season is another blow to a starting rotation already missing ace... [More]

The procedure was conducted on Tuesday in St. Louis, and the Pirates said Archer will not be available this season if Major League Baseball finds a way to put together a truncated schedule. The Pirates were banking on a bounce back year by Archer, who is 6-12 with a 4.92 ERA in 33 starts since he was acquired from Tampa Bay at the 2018 trade deadline for outfielder Austin Meadows and pitcher Tyler Glasnow. Archer has struggled to find any consistency with the Pirates, while Meadows became an All-Star last season and Glasnow also blossomed.Archer's contract includes a $9 million salary this year, but he will receive only a portion due to the coronavirus pandemic.
