A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:AILINGThe Mets will check Robinson Canó, a day after he left the game against Washington because of tightness in his left quadriceps.Canó appeared to hurt the leg while running to first base when he grounded out in the third inning. The 36-year-old second baseman is batting .241 with three homers and 13 RBIs. The eight-time All-Star was acquired by New York from Seattle in December.Twice last weekend Canó failed to run out grounders in Miami, both of them resulting in double plays.MISSING MARTINEZBoston star J.D. Martinez wasn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game at Toronto because of a sore back and manager Alex Cora says the slugger is unlikely to play again until Friday.Cora said he was hesitant to play Martinez in the series finale, citing the artificial surface and the early afternoon start. The Red Sox will certainly miss Martinez's presence in the lineup, but the Blue Jays will not — he has 13 home runs and 41 RBIs in 40 career... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Switching into stretch-run mode even before Memorial Day, the New York Mets will start using All-Star closer Edwin Díaz more often in the eighth inning.New York began Wednesday with a 22-25 record, 5½ games back of NL East-leading Philadelphia. Manager Mickey Callaway said he was willing to go against the trend of limiting closers to three outs in most situations."We're doing this earlier than we would like, but you might see Díaz for four outs," Callaway said. "If we're not going to be where we want to be at this point, how can we expect to be there and hold off on doing that with Díaz? So we got to win some games. We're going to approach this like it's the playoffs because we feel like we need to."Callaway announced the decision shortly before the Mets made a series of roster moves. They placed outfielder Brandon Nimmo on the 10-day injured list because of a stiff neck, a move retroactive to Tuesday, selected the contract of 38-year-old outfielder Rajai Davis from Triple-A... BALTIMORE (AP) — The New York Yankees have climbed into first place in the AL East in spite of a myriad of injuries and partially because the front end of their schedule is loaded with games against the Baltimore Orioles.Clint Frazier homered twice and had a career-high five RBIs, Gary Sánchez contributed a three-run drive and the Yankees kept up their assault on Baltimore pitching in an 11-4 rout Tuesday night.Nearly a fifth of New York's 47 games thus far have been against the Orioles, who are 6-17 at home and 15-33 overall, the worst record in the AL. The Yankees are 8-2 against the Orioles, have outscored them 73-40 and hit at least one home run in every game.New York is 5-0 at Camden Yards this season and has won an unprecedented 10 straight in Baltimore, opening a two-game division lead despite 17 players going on the injured list."I personally like hitting in this ballpark and it's a fun atmosphere whenever we're here," Frazier said. Eaton said after Monday's game: "I tried to stay patient with the childishness.""That's Adam," Frazier said. "That's him. At the end of the day, you think about what a man really is. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers reliever Shawn Kelley learned that two lumps removed from his throat last week were benign, and the 35-year-old right-hander was activated from the 10-day injured list.Kelley was placed on the injured list on May 9, and the lumps were removed last Thursday. Kelley, who doesn't use tobacco, had reported discomfort when talking and when rolling over while in bed."I really did feel like everything was going to be OK, and that a lot of it was precaution," he said Tuesday. "And to come on a day when I was going to be reactivated, anyways, is pretty exciting."Kelley is 3-0 with two saves and a 1.29 ERA in 14 appearances in his first season with the Rangers. He said the only pain is when he looks straight up because of the two internal stitches."If there's a pop-up on the mound, I'm going to need help," he said with a laugh. "You're going to see me leaning back."Left-hander Brett Martin was optioned to Triple-A Nashville.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
