Sun Dec 18 201120:38Lovie Smith not talking about QB for Week 16
Coach Lovie Smith declined to name a Week 16 quarterback following Sunday's loss to the Seahawks.
It's hard to see Smith sticking with Caleb Hanie. He was yanked again today and is now 0-4 with nine interceptions in four starts. Jay Cutler (thumb) reportedly has an "outside chance" to play in Week 16, but Josh McCown is more likely to get the nod.

Sun Dec 18 201116:11Bears bench Hanie after 3-interception game
Caleb Hanie was yanked in the fourth quarter after completing 10-of-23 passes for 111 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in the Bears' Week 15 loss to the Seahawks.
Two of Hanie's interceptions were returned to the house, the first by 300-pound DE Red Bryant from 20 yards out and the second by CB Brandon Browner from 42 yards away. Hanie is brutal, and the Bears' loss Sunday is almost certainly going to disqualify them from playoff contention. Josh McCown replaced Hanie against the Seahawks. FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported early Sunday that the Bears are holding out hope that Jay Cutler can return from thumb surgery. Regardless, Hanie has almost certainly started his last game in a Bears uniform.

Sun Dec 11 201119:45Hanie reined in as Bears blow 10-point lead
Caleb Hanie completed 12-of-19 passes for 115 yards in Chicago's Week 14 overtime loss to the Broncos.
OC Mike Martz had vowed to let Hanie be more aggressive today, but instead did just the opposite, reining his backup signal caller in after he came unglued against the Chiefs in Week 13. It worked like a charm for three quarters but proved disastrous in the fourth. Nursing a 10-0 lead, Hanie was asked to throw just once on Chicago's final four drives. The conservative strategy failed to produce a first down, and let Tim Tebow guide Denver to another unbelievable comeback. Things won't get easier against Seattle's solid defense in Week 15.

Thu Dec 8 201109:26Martz to get more aggressive with Hanie?
Offensive coordinator Mike Martz said he plans on being "a little bit more aggressive" with Caleb Hanie this week.
Over the last two weeks, Martz has slimmed down the playbook and called a conservative game for Hanie. The Bears are 0-2 and Hanie has thrown six interceptions. He was also sacked seven times against the Chiefs. Opening up the playbook against the Broncos Sunday is unlikely to help matters. The only viable fantasy play on the Bears' roster is Marion Barber.

Mon Dec 5 201113:18Bears coach gives Hanie a vote of confidence
Bears coach Lovie Smith gave Caleb Hanie a vote of confidence at his Monday press conference.
"Caleb's our quarterback," Smith said. The Bears were reportedly "in conversations" with free agent Donovan McNabb after Hanie completed just 11 passes while tossing three picks Sunday, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reports a signing is unlikely. Hanie presented so little downfield threat against the Chiefs that they essentially brought the house on every play in the second half, but it sounds like he'll get at least one more start.

Sun Nov 27 201119:32Hanie throws three picks as Bears fall
Caleb Hanie completed just 18-of-35 passes for 254 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions as the Bears lost to the Raiders 25-20 in Week 12.
He did rush five times for 50 yards, showing good speed when the Raiders' linebackers and defensive backs all cleared out in coverage. Ultimately, Hanie's passes were all over the place and he did exactly what the Bears' don't need -- turn the football over. He also got the ball to previous No. 1 receiver Earl Bennett just once for five yards, showing a better rapport with situational deep threat Johnny Knox. Hanie is likely to keep the starting job, but he won't be a fantasy option against the Chiefs in Week 13.

Sun Nov 27 201108:45Martz to simplify offense with Hanie
Offensive coordinator Mike Martz plans to simplify the Bears offense with Caleb Hanie taking over for Jay Cutler.
''We kind of tweaked it,'' Martz said. ''We can really run the football. Those two big tight ends and the back and the line, they are just getting better every week.'' The Bears had already been transitioning to a run-first offense prior to Cutler's injury and are expected to continue to rely on Matt Forte even more going forward. Despite a favorable upcoming schedule against the AFC West, Hanie should barely be on the radar in two-quarterback leagues.

Sun Nov 20 201122:39Caleb Hanie takes over as Bears starting QB
Caleb Hanie will take over as the Bears' starting quarterback, likely for the rest of the season.
Jay Cutler, at a minimum, will miss six weeks with a fractured right thumb. Hanie has thrown only 14 career regular season passes, but did go 13-of-20 for 153 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in last year's playoff loss to Green Bay, playing in relief of Cutler. Hanie's best attributes are arm strength and athleticism. His decision making and accuracy have been drawbacks, along with Mike Martz's consistent failure to endorse him. We'd certainly still pick up Hanie in two-quarterback leagues.

Fri Sep 23 201108:55Scout: Hanie has a future as a starter
One NFC scout tells the Chicago Tribune that backup QB Caleb Hanie has "the potential to become a starter" next season.
"He performed well in a difficult situation in the NFC championship game," said the scout. "He's a gamer who rises to the challenge. He will get some looks when he becomes free." Unless Jay Cutler goes down for an extended period, we doubt Hanie will put enough on film to land a starting job in free agency. It's a good bet that he'll leave a Bears squad, though, that has consistently tried to replace him as the top backup.

Wed Aug 17 201113:24Martz: Hanie locked in as Bears backup
Offensive coordinator Mike Martz insisted Wednesday that Caleb Hanie is locked in as the Bears' backup quarterback.
Martz said it'd require Hanie's "arm falling off" for him to lose the job to rookie Nathan Enderle. It's nice of Martz to stick up for Hanie publicly, but his actions speak louder than words. Enderle will be the backup by 2012.

Mon Aug 15 201119:56Caleb Hanie upset after losing snaps
Bears QB Caleb Hanie was "visibly upset" after having his practice reps cut in favor of rookie Nate Enderle on Monday.
Hanie didn't take a single snap in 7-on-7s, and declined to speak to reporters after the session. Hanie should've seen this coming; offensive coordinator Mike Martz has never been a fan. He could lose his backup job to Enderle.

Sat Aug 13 201122:48Hanie takes three sacks in preseason opener
Caleb Hanie was ineffective in the Bears' preseason opener on Saturday, completing just 3-of-7 passes for 32 yards while taking three sacks.
He spelled starter Jay Cutler after just one series. Woeful offensive line play didn't do Hanie any favors this evening, but he routinely took too long to get rid of the ball. Hanie is in little danger of losing his backup job to fifth-round pick Nathan Enderle (who completed 7-of-10 passes for 110 yards and a pick this evening), but he needs to look better when the Bears take on the Giants next Monday.

Fri Jul 29 201116:23Hanie signs his one-year tender
Bears signed QB Caleb Hanie to a one-year contract.
Hanie was a restricted free agent that was never realistically going to go anywhere. He returns as Jay Cutler's backup before getting to test free agency in the unrestricted form next offseason.

Tue Jul 19 201116:19Hanie 'fully expected' back in Chicago
It is "fully expected" that restricted free agent QB Caleb Hanie will be back with the Bears this season.
It has become exceedingly rare for teams to lose their RFAs. Even if he doesn't carry coordinator Mike Martz's imprimatur, Hanie is valuable to the Bears because he knows the offense. He'll spend the offseason backing up Jay Cutler before a likely exit in 2012.

Wed Jun 15 201111:47Martz 'far from sold' on Caleb Hanie?
Although Caleb Hanie has received plenty of national praise as a backup with promise this offseason, the Chicago Sun-Times believes coordinator Mike Martz is "far from sold."
Hanie was the only Bears QB to effectively move the offense in the NFC Championship game, yet Martz still found reason to quibble. "Caleb still threw two picks," Martz said at the NFL Combine. "It's not like he had a great game or anything." We've never heard Martz direct the same brand of criticism at Jay Cutler after disastrous outings. In fact, Martz's obnoxiously overboard praise of the Bears' mediocre offensive talent has been a overflowing spigot since he landed in Chicago. Look for Hanie to fly the coop in 2012.

Tue May 17 201110:34Caleb Hanie expected to walk after 2011
ESPN Chicago's Jeff Dickerson expects Caleb Hanie to win the Bears' backup job in 2011, but for the team to let him walk as a free agent after the season.
Hanie shouldn't have trouble beating out fifth-round pick Nate Enderle, but by 2012 Enderle will presumably be prepared to back up Jay Cutler. Hanie, who turns 26 on September 11, has completed 60.3 percent of his 116 career preseason passes for a 7.27 YPA, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. He's also shown athleticism by averaging 5.2 yards per preseason rushing attempt.

Thu May 5 201110:10Martz: Hanie will have to hold off Enderle
Bears OC Mike Martz made it clear that Caleb Hanie will have to beat out fifth-round pick Nate Enderle for Chicago's No. 2 quarterback job.
"What if Nate is better (than Hanie)?" said Martz. "Who knows? I don't know that he is or isn't." Martz has never been a big believer in Hanie, even though his tape from preseasons and the 2011 postseason is pretty good. Enderle was handpicked by Martz, which is a big vote in the rookie's favor. When it comes to QBs, history says Martz either likes you or he doesn't.

Thu Apr 21 201115:25Angelo's draft plans include quarterback
GM Jerry Angelo hinted Thursday that he will use one of his six draft picks on a developmental quarterback.
Angelo drafted Dan LeFevour in the sixth round last year, only to see him released before the start of the season. Presumably Caleb Hanie would move up to the primary backup spot this year, though Mike Martz may not be on board. The Bears have shown interest in North Carolina's T.J. Yates and Idaho's Nathan Enderle.

Tue Mar 22 201115:18Bears like Hanie, but may add another QB
Coach Lovie Smith feels good about Caleb Hanie as his No. 2 quarterback, but he's not ruling out adding competition.
The Bears "really like" Hanie, but they could add either "a veteran or a college quarterback" this offseason. Just like coordinator Mike Martz, Smith refuses to acknowledge last year's mistake of pushing Todd Collins back ahead of Hanie on the depth chart.

Wed Mar 2 201122:08Bears give Hanie the original pick tender
The Bears extended restricted free agent QB Caleb Hanie an original pick tender.
Hanie is a three-year vet, so the tender will stick. It's worth noting that Hanie had productive preseasons when Ron Turner ran the Bears' offense 2008-2009, and Turner is now an assistant in Indianapolis. The Colts' backup is unimpressive Curtis Painter. The draft-pick compensation for acquiring Hanie via an offer sheet would be nill because he's a former undrafted free agent.
