Texans signed QB Stephen McGee to a reserve/future contract.
McGee didn't play in 2012 after being cut by the Cowboys at final cuts out of training camp, but he did have several workouts with Bucs, Bears, and Dolphins being among them. He'll battle Case Keenum for No. 3 duties behind Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates.

Tue Dec 11 201220:15Bears work out two quarterbacks
The Bears worked out free agent QBs Stephen McGee and Josh Johnson Tuesday.
The Bears are likely just updating their emergency list, but it could also be a sign Jay Cutler's (neck) Week 15 status isn't assured. This is just McGee's second known workout since he was waived by the Cowboys at final cuts.

Wed Sep 5 201219:48Bucs work out Stephen McGee
Free agent QB Stephen McGee worked out for the Bucs.
The Bucs are only two deep at quarterback, but it appears they were just doing their due diligence on the former Cowboy. McGee was terrible in the preseason and has no practice squad eligibility. Perhaps he'll resurface as a No. 2 or 3 quarterback during the year with a team racked by injuries.

Sat Sep 1 201213:01Cowboys waive third-string QB McGee
Cowboys waived QB Stephen McGee.
The Cowboys will roll with only Kyle Orton behind Tony Romo. On notice this preseason, McGee responded by completing just 27-of-49 passes for 310 yards, zero scores and a pick. McGee's development has clearly stalled, though owner Jerry Jones claimed Thursday he's drawn interest from other teams.

Mon Jul 16 201218:38Cowboys QB McGee on the roster bubble
Josh Ellis of Dallascowboys.com says "there doesn't appear to be much of an upside" to keeping QB Stephen McGee on the roster this season.
Dallas showed its lack of confidence in McGee when they signed Kyle Orton to back up Tony Romo. Additionally, Rudy Carpenter was claimed off waivers and may have an edge on McGee for the No. 3 job because he's eligible for the practice squad. Ellis considers McGee a candidate for trade or release.

Mon Jun 18 201211:27Cowboys 'clearly' not excited about McGee
According to ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys "clearly aren't excited" about third-string QB Stephen McGee's development.
Reporter Tim MacMahon believes McGee will be forced to compete with waivers pickup Rudy Carpenter for a roster spot. McGee has completed just 46 of his 82 career passes, throwing for 420 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions across parts of three games. He wasn't particularly impressive last preseason.

Fri Jun 15 201212:42Stephen McGee struggles in minicamp
Cowboys third-string QB Stephen McGee had an "inconsistent" week of mandatory minicamp while seeing an increase in reps.
McGee got more action as Kyle Orton nursed a hamstring injury. He reportedly struggled particularly in red-zone situation and showed poor touch on his passes. In limited game action, McGee has not appeared to be a natural thrower of the football. His roster spot could be in danger in training camp.

Tue Apr 10 201214:11QB Stephen McGee's development 'stunted'?
The Dallas Morning News believes QB Stephen McGee's development has been "stunted."
It was obvious that the Cowboys had lost faith in McGee when they tried to claim Kyle Orton off waivers in October and subsequently signed the veteran to a high-end backup contract in March. McGee and Rudy Carpenter will reprise their 2009 camp battle for the No. 3 QB gig this summer.

Sat Mar 3 201221:15Dallas only interested in veteran quarterback
The Dallas Morning News confirms the Cowboys will pursue a veteran backup for Tony Romo when free agency begins on March 13.
Stephen McGee will be entering the final year of his rookie contract and hasn't done enough to prove he can be Romo's full-time backup. Owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett recently indicated that Dallas has no plans to go after a quarterback in April's draft.

Sat Jan 28 201212:18Stephen McGee likely to be third-stringer
Owner Jerry Jones has hinted the Cowboys will pursue a veteran backup for Tony Romo following the retirement of Jon Kitna.
It appears Stephen McGee is headed for another year of third-string duty. "If somebody really has to start taking snaps, you'd like to see a guy with more experience (than McGee)," Jones said. The Cowboys should have little trouble finding a new backup in a market saturated with veteran quarterbacks.

Fri Jan 20 201209:00Cowboys noncommittal on McGee as No. 2
The Cowboys are still evaluating Stephen McGee's progress as a candidate for the No. 2 QB role in 2012.
"We like what he's done," said coach Jason Garrett. "But it's an important position, and we've got to make sure we have enough people if for no other reason than guys get hurt." The Cowboys submitted a waiver claim for Kyle Orton and waited weeks to send Jon Kitna to injured reserve. Their actions suggests a lack of faith in McGee as the primary backup to Tony Romo.

Mon May 23 201109:36McGee the future backup to Kitna?
Beat writer Charean Williams believes Stephen McGee will be the long-term backup to Tony Romo.
McGee isn't going to beat out Jon Kitna this year, but Kitna turns 39 in September. The 2009 fourth-rounder will be expected to step into the backup chair as soon as 2012.

Sun Jan 2 201120:34McGee leads Cowboys to win in Philly
Stephen McGee completed 11-of-27 passes for 127 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's win over the Eagles.
McGee added an impressive nine rushes for 55 yards. What's not impressive was that McGee played against exclusive second stringers for virtually the entire game and still struggled to string together passes. He was wildly erratic, missing both high and low at points. The 2009 fourth-round pick will be the No. 3 quarterback this offseason.
Thu Dec 30 201018:02Garrett all but confirms McGee will start
Interim coach Jason Garrett hinted strongly that Stephen McGee will make his first career start Sunday at Philadelphia.
"He's a capable guy, he can move around in the pocket, he can throw the football," said Garrett. "He's done a nice job in practice and hopefully he can carry that to the ball game." The Eagles will be resting a lot of their starters, and the secondary has been weak spot of late. McGee is worthy of consideration in two-quarterback leagues. Former UFLer Chris Greisen is expected to be Dallas No. 2 QB in Week 17 with Jon Kitna (oblique) sidelined.

Mon Dec 27 201012:09Stephen McGee likely to start in Week 17
Stephen McGee is likely to start for the Cowboys in Week 17.
It doesn't appear Jon Kitna (oblique) will be well enough to even serve as the backup in the regular season finale, as the Cowboys are expected to sign former UFLer Chris Greisen and give him a crash course to prep him for the No. 2 role Sunday. McGee shook off some early-game jitters after coming on for Kitna Saturday and played pretty well. He would be an option in two-quarterback leagues this weekend.

Sun Dec 26 201000:53McGee relieves injured Kitna, does okay
Cowboys QB Stephen McGee relieved an injured Jon Kitna (abdominal), and completed 11 of 17 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in a Week 16 loss at Arizona on Christmas night.
McGee looked like a deer-in-headlights during his first couple series after halftime, but eventually settled in to post an impressive 102.8 passer rating, and gave the Cowboys a fighting chance after they fell behind early. The former Aggie made some great throws, including a beautiful 37-yard scoring bomb in the seam to Miles Austin that put Dallas within striking distance in the fourth quarter. With Kitna banged up and the Cowpokes having nothing left to play for, McGee could make for a sneaky QB2 option against the Eagles Week 17.
Sat Dec 25 201012:08McGee unlikely to play at all in 2010
Tom Orsborn of the Houston Chronicle does not believe QB Stephen McGee will see snaps in the Cowboys' final two games.
It's a deviation from the normal course, as out of contention teams usually try to get their young players snaps down the stretch. Owner Jerry Jones clearly wants to generate momentum for 2011 by winning, meaning Jon Kitna will be the starter for the remainder of the season barring injury.

Sat Nov 20 201010:22McGee no likely to see playing time soon
Cowboys beat writer David Moore suggested QB Stephen McGee won't see any playing time before the final two games of the season, if at all.
Interim head coach Jason Garrett would be hard pressed to replace Jon Kitna with McGee at any point in the season, especially considering he's audition for position. Kitna gives the team the best chance to win, and McGee is strictly a long-term project player.
