Wed Apr 18 201800:10Yankees put Kahnle on 10-day DL, recall Cessa
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with right shoulder tendinitis.Kahnle is 1-0 with a 6.14 ERA in six appearances. With his velocity down this season, the right-hander has struck out nine and walked eight in 7 1/3 innings. The move was made retroactive to Monday. Before the Yankees hosted Miami, manager Aaron Boone said the club was awaiting results of an MRI but was optimistic a few days of rest will get Kahnle back on track. To fill his spot, New York recalled right-hander Luis Cessa from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Cessa was optioned to Triple-A on Sunday and penciled in to start for the RailRiders so he would stay stretched out enough to make an upcoming spot start for the Yankees. But once he returned Tuesday, those plans quickly changed.Cessa entered in the sixth inning of a 9-1 loss to Miami but was removed in the eighth with a strained left oblique. Wed Mar 28 201802:30FANTASY PLAYS: Rookies to watch in 2018
Projecting how top prospects will perform in their rookie campaign is difficult. In 2017, Matt Olson and Rhys Hoskins did a lot of producing with little opportunity, while Yuli Gurriel hit only 18 home runs in 139 games as a first baseman.Sometimes limited opportunities don't kill a player's value, while full-time opportunities won't necessarily guarantee that a rookie will be fantasy relevant, either. Trying to balance potential impact and possible opportunities is the key to projecting who will be the best rookies to own in fantasy.Ronald Acuna, OF, Atlanta BravesCurrent Player Comparison: Justin UptonAcuna hits for both power and batting average, he gets on base and he has enough speed to contribute a few stolen bases as well. With an ADP of 126, according to FantasyPros, he is a better selection with more upside than players like Adam Jones, Ian Desmond and Ender Inciarte.Shohei Ohtani, SP/DH, Los Angeles AngelsComp: Yu DarvishOhtani's 95-plus mph fastball, multiple breaking balls and... Mon Mar 26 201813:00Baseball 2018: Angels' Ohtani among rookies to watch
CHICAGO (AP) — Aaron Judge. Cody Bellinger. Andrew Benintendi. Paul DeJong. The list goes on and on.Last year's rookie class was one of the best in baseball history. Topping that group of sluggers will be quite a chore, but here is a closer look at some touted prospects hoping to make a name for themselves this year:—RHP/DH Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Angels: The 23-year-old Ohtani is trying to become the first player in nearly 100 years to play regularly as a pitcher and hitter, but he had mixed results during spring training. Ohtani spent the previous five seasons with the Nippon Ham Fighters, showing off a big fastball and a powerful bat.—OF Ronald Acuna, Atlanta Braves: The future is now for the crown jewel of Atlanta's loaded farm system after Matt Kemp was traded to the Dodgers in December. The 20-year-old Acuna will begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett, pushing back his eligibility for arbitration, but it's only a matter of time before he is up with the Braves after he hit .325 with... Thu Mar 22 201811:30Yanks have swagger back after adding Stanton to Baby Bombers
NEW YORK (AP) — The swagger is back. The New York Yankees reached Game 7 of last year's AL Championship Series behind Baby Bombers Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird and young ace Luis Severino. Then they added the mightiest slugger in the major leagues, Giancarlo Stanton, and brought in a new manager they think will lead them to World Series title No. 28."We already had a great team," Judge said, "but adding Stanton and a couple other pieces, we're going to be great. It's going to be a fun thing we have here."New York was second in the AL East to Boston last year at 91-71, up seven wins from 2016 and the Yankees' best record since 2012. They scored 858 runs, an increase of 178, and led the major leagues with 241 homers — including a rookie-record 52 by Judge. The major changes were signing Neil Walker to replace Starlin Castro at second and acquiring Brandon Drury from Arizona to take over from Todd Frazier at third."It's just a question of it being a long season and can everybody stay... Sun Mar 18 201817:04Yankees sent rookie 3B Miguel Andujar to minors
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees rookie Miguel Andujar will start the season in the minors, rather than at third base in the majors. The Yankees optioned Andujar to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, clearing the way for Brandon Drury to claim the spot. The move allows the 23-year-old Andujar, who hit .262 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 14 spring training games, to work on his defense in the minors."I think everybody got a peek at the kind of hitter we think he's going to be," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "Had a long talk with him (and told him), just go down there and continue to polish, continue to get better, continue to work, and it won't be too long before he's up here for good."Drury, obtained from Arizona last month, was the front-runner for the position. He hit .267 with 13 homers and 63 RBIs for Arizona last season.Another rookie, Gleyber Torres, was in the mix to start at second base but was optioned March 13 to Triple-A. Fri Mar 16 201814:43FANTASY PLAYS: Lots of depth at shortstop this season
Shortstop offers depth and diversity this season for fantasy baseball owners, who will have the opportunity to use a top 30 pick or significant auction funds on a quartet of players that can become cornerstones of success.Trea Turner's versatility and value in the stolen base category makes the Nationals standout a top 5 overall pick while Carlos Correa of the Astros has the potential to emerge as the position's most dominant power hitter since Alex Rodriguez's peak years. Indians star Francisco Lindor is a half-notch below Turner and Correa and Corey Seager of the Dodgers has enough pop in his bat to join Correa as a possible member of the 30-homer club.Fantasy owners who miss out on the top 4 should not lament as the position goes around 10-12 players deep before a noticeable drop. Even then, middle-tiered shortstops like the Rockies' Trevor Story, Jorge Polanco of the Twins and Eduardo Nunez of the Red Sox can provide above-average production while players like Jose Peraza (Reds), Addison... TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — CC Sabathia was upbeat after allowing one run and four hits over four innings Thursday in the New York Yankees' 2-2, nine-inning tie against the Detroit Tigers."I felt great," the 37-year-old left-hander said. "If I feel like I felt today all year. I feel like I'll be pretty good. That's encouraging."Sabathia, who wears a brace on his surgically repaired right knee, was 14-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 29 starts last season in his best season since 2012. He has adjusted to decreased velocity."I feel pretty comfortable with the stuff that I have," Sabathia said.Sabathia walked one and struck out one during his 64-pitch outing, his second spring training appearance."Felt great about what I saw," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "I thought he commanded his pitches. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Free agent Neil Walker and the Yankees agreed to a $4 million, one-year contract, a 75 percent paycut for the infielder in a deal that allows New York prospects Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar more time to mature in the minor leagues.Walker likely will start at second base and Brandon Drury, acquired from Arizona last month, will play third. Walker can make $1 million in performance bonuses: $125,000 each for 425, 450, 475 and 500 plate appearances.Walker is among the victims of a historically slow free agent market.
