Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com was told by Edgar Renteria's agent, Barry Meister, that his client does not intend to play this season and is leaning toward retirement. |

Fri Nov 4 2011 | 08:45 | Edgar Renteria will continue playing career |
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Edgar Renteria intends to continue his playing career in 2012. |
Renteria got hot during the Giants' World Series run in 2010, but he's been pretty awful the last three regular seasons, most recently batting an ugly .251/.306/.348 for the Reds this year while showing less range than ever at shortstop. The 36-year-old will likely have to settle for a minor league deal. |

Renteria appeared in 91 games for the Reds and batted .251/.306/.348 with a 3.52 range factor and .959 fielding percentage. Hernandez is a plus hitting catcher who will likely draw some interest as a backup on the open market. |

Sun Aug 21 2011 | 13:18 | Edgar Renteria could return soon |
Reds manager Dusty Baker said Edgar Renteria (groin) could return to the lineup during the series with the Marlins that begins Tuesday. |
Renteria was able to pinch-hit Saturday, but Baker was set to pinch-run for him if he got on. "That's a sign he's getting closer," Baker said. "Maybe in Florida. He had a good at-bat, an excellent at-bat. I was going to have Homer (Bailey) run for him. I have pinch-hitters, pinch-runners, pinch-everything." |

Fri Aug 19 2011 | 20:30 | Edgar Renteria considered day-to-day |
Reds manager Dusty Baker thinks Edgar Renteria (groin) could be available to play "in a couple of days." |
"It's daily," Baker said of Renteria's status. "I was informed that Edgar could be back and ready in a couple of days. It's not easy playing short[handed], especially on the infield." With Zack Cozart having season-ending elbow surgery, the Reds are down to Paul Janish at shortstop for the time being, with Miguel Cairo and Todd Frazier available to play there in a pinch. |

Wed Aug 17 2011 | 17:29 | D'Backs looking to trade for Edgar Renteria? |
John Gambadoro of 620 KTAR in Phoenix reports that the Diamondbacks are looking into Edgar Renteria. |
The D'Backs, who lost Stephen Drew to a fractured ankle earlier this season, are hoping to pad the depth on their middle infield. Renteria has lost a couple steps defensively and is no longer a consistent offensive performer, but he played a huge role for the Giants last postseason and Arizona may be attracted to his experience. |

Edgar Renteria has been diagnosed with a strained left groin. |
Renteria had to exit Tuesday's game after contributing an RBI double in the seventh inning. We'll know more about his status going forward after he's reevaluated Wednesday, but it certainly seems possible that the DL could be in order. Paul Janish will handle shortstop while Renteria is out. |

Sat Jul 23 2011 | 19:41 | Renteria drives in three in win over Braves |
Edgar Renteria was 2-for-4 with three RBI in Saturday's 11-2 win over the Braves. |
Not bad for a guy who wasn't even supposed to play. Renteria was expected to be unavailable due to illness, but he was forced into duty at shortstop after Zack Cozart hyperextended his left elbow on a collision at second base in the fourth inning. Renteria collected a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth and added an RBI single in a seven-run seventh. The veteran infielder will likely play shortstop while Cozart is sidelined, but he's not a fantasy option. |

Tue Jul 19 2011 | 00:39 | Renteria strikes out in pinch-hit appearance |
Edgar Renteria struck out in a pinch-hit appearance in Cincinnati's 2-0 loss to the Pirates on Monday evening. |
The Reds could manage just three hits this evening, one of which came off the bat of pitcher Dontrelle Willis. Now hitting .230/.305/.277 through his first 169 plate appearances this season, it's fair to wonder if Renteria will be able to finish the season on Cincinnati's 25-man roster. |

Edgar Renteria remained out of the lineup Tuesday due to a sore lower back. |
He's feeling better, though, and is expected back over the weekend. "He's a lot better," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "If he continues this, he could be ready for a couple of games in San Francisco. If he wasn't, we'd be thinking about DL-ing him. But if we don't have to, we won't." Renteria is hitting just .237/.324/.268 in 97 at-bats this season. |

Mon Jun 6 2011 | 10:43 | Renteria out Sunday due to minor back injury |
Edgar Renteria was unavailable for Sunday's game against the Dodgers due to a minor back injury. |
The Reds could use the minor injury as an excuse to free up a 25-man roster spot for productive minor league shorstop Zack Cozart. Or perhaps they'll simply allow Renteria to rest up for the next few days. The veteran is batting .237/.324/.268 in 97 at-bats this season. |
