Bell (knee/Achilles) is still slated to be the Lions' starting running back this season, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
The continued notion of Bell starting came via an interview with rookie running back Zach Zenner and it cannot be taken as much of a surprise. Bell is the elder statesman in the Lions' running backs room and has rushed for a combined 15 touchdowns to go along with 87 receptions over the past two seasons. Still, even if the job is his, expect a slight decrease in touches. With Bell averaging fewer than four yards per carry in each of the past two seasons, rookie Ameer Abdullah will be called upon to bring some lightning to Bell's thunder. Theo Riddick, who has been the Lions' starter for much of camp, also figures to see his share of touches.

Bell (knee/Achilles) remains on the Lions' PUP list in advance of Thursday's preseason opener against the Jets, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Per the report, Bell could possibly be activated within a week, and once that occurs, he'll look to re-establish his slotting as the Lions' likely top back, with promising rookie Ameer Abdullah on hand to work in a complementary fashion out of the gate this season, at a minimum. Meanwhile, Theo Riddick is also in the mix, though his main contributions in the offense figure to come in the passing game.
Tue Aug 11 201517:02Bell (knee/Achilles) ramped up side work at Tuesday's practice
Bell (knee/Achilles) ramped up his side work at Tuesday's practice, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Although he doesn't have a timetable to practice, Bell has been running sprints on the side for at least the last week, suggesting he could still be ready by Week 1. His absence will allow Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick to get more first-team reps during training camp and the preseason, potentially helping their respective bids to earn roles in the offense. Bell is the clear favorite to get goal-line and early-down carries when healthy, but Abdullah and Riddick shouldn't be underestimated as threats to his workload, especially on passing downs.

Bell -- who is bouncing back from minor knee and Achilles' tendon procedures in January -- worked out on the side with a trainer during Monday's training camp practice, MLive.com reports.
While there is still no timetable with regard to Bell rejoining his teammates on the practice field, the report relays that the running back was "aggressively running suicide sprints," Monday, while suggesting that "it doesn't appear he'll be out of action long." Meanwhile, the Detroit Free Press notes that coach Jim Caldwell indicated Sunday that Bell is in line to see action during the Lions' exhibition season, which further reinforces the notion that the running back's reintroduction to the mix is on the horizon. Upon his return, Bell will look to hold of the challenge of rookie Ameer Abdullah, who has continued to impress during the early stages of training camp.
Fri Jul 31 201515:22Although he said Bell (knee/Achilles) progressing quickly
Although he said Bell (knee/Achilles) is progressing quickly, Lions head coach Jim Caldwell also said there is no timetable for the running back's return, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Bell was placed on the PUP list to start training camp, but he can be activated at any point before the regular season. Although the Lions have made it clear that they still plan on having the veteran lead their backfield come Week 1, it's fair to wonder if Bell will be impacted by the aftermath of his offseason surgeries. He said a month ago that he wasn't worried, but the recovery process has already lingered quite a bit longer than expected. With Bell absent from training camp, Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick will get extra snaps with the first-team offense.
Wed Jul 29 201518:42Bell placed in Lions' PUP list
Bell, who underwent minor knee and Achilles' tendon procedures in January, has been placed in the Lions' PUP list, the Detroit News reports.
It remains to be seen when Bell will return to the practice field, but once he does, with Reggie Bush having departed this offseason, Bell -- who led the Lions with 860 rushing yards (on 223 carries) in 15 games this past season, while scoring eight total TDs -- along with second-round draft pick Ameer Abdullah are expected to head the team's 2015 backfield.

Bell, who has spent the offseason resting his knee and Achilles, is expected to return to the field in time for the start of training camp, mlive.com reports.
Moreover, Bell doesn't seem concerned about the ailments that he is recovering from, setting some fantasy-friendly goals in the process. "I'm going to rush for over 1,200 yards," Bell noted. "That's the minimum. If I do less than that, I'll be surprised. I'll be disappointed." While we'll take his self-projections with a bit of a grain of salt for now, it is encouraging that Bell is on track to be ready for training camp, at which time he'll resume work atop a Detroit backfield that now also includes second-rounder Ameer Abdullah, a speedy back who should work in a complementary role, at a minimum, as well as returnee Theo Riddick, who is in line to contribute as a pass-catching back.
Thu Jun 4 201517:16Bell (knee/Achilles) still isn't participating in OTAs
Bell (knee/Achilles) still isn't participating in OTAs, the Lions' official website reports.
Bell had minor surgeries on his knee and Achilles in January, but there hasn't been any indication that he's in danger of missing training camp. If he's still unavailable for mandatory minicamp (June 16-18), it might be time to start taking his absence more seriously. For now, Bell is still on track to lead the Detroit backfield, with Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah expected to mostly contribute in the passing game.
Wed May 27 201512:34Bell (knee/Achilles) didn't participate in Wednesday's OTAs
Bell (knee/Achilles) didn't participate in Wednesday's OTAs, Tim Twentyman of Detroitlions.com reports.
Bell underwent minor surgery to clean up his knee and Achilles tendon in January, so his absence from Wednesday's OTA session could well be maintenance-related. With Reggie Bush no longer in the mix, Bell currently slots in as the Lions' No. 1 running back, with Ameer Abdullah, the 54th overall pick in the NFL draft, a candidate to push him for the starting job at some point down the road, the Detroit Free Press reports. Meanwhile, Theo Riddick is also on hand and appears poised to contribute as a pass-catcher out of the Detroit backfield.

Bell recently underwent what the Detroit Free Press describes as minor surgeries to clean up his knee and Achilles tendon.
On the plus side, Bell, who led the Lions with 860 rushing yards (on 223 carries) in 15 games this past season, while scoring eight total TDs, is expected to return in time for the Lions' organized offseason workouts. Health permitting, he's on track to remain to team's lead back as the 2015 campaign approaches.
Thu Jan 15 201520:58Bell underwent surgery Thursday
Bell underwent surgery Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The nature of Bell's surgery is unknown at this time, but he tweeted out a photo of himself in a hospital gown, confirming he underwent a procedure. It is likely something minor, and shouldn't cost him time in 2015. If it turns out to be serious, Bell should receive an update in the future.

Bell (Achilles) had 13 carries for 60 yards in Sunday's 30-20 loss at Green Bay. He was not targeted a single time in the passing game.
Bell had a couple of tough runs, but wasn't able to really bust out, and the Lions had to abandon the run in the fourth quarter. He almost scored a 2-pt conversion late in the game, but the play was overturned by replay. Meanwhile, Reggie Bush was not effective, rushing for just 19 yards on five carries. The Lions will travel to Dallas in the first round of the playoffs, and it appears that Bell will continue to see most of the work in the team's backfield, just as an FYI for those that are playing in postseason leagues.
Sun Dec 28 201415:07Bell (Achilles) active for Sunday's game against Packers
Bell (Achilles) is active for Sunday's game against the Packers.
Bell was rarely used in the first half last week against the Bears, but recovered after halftime to post a good final line (87 total yards and a touchdown). Reggie Bush will be around to share the carries, but Bell is expected to get the bigger chunk of the workload.
Fri Dec 26 201416:28Bell (Achilles) probable for Sunday's game against Green Bay
Bell (Achilles) is probable for Sunday's game against Green Bay.
Bell practiced all week, including fully Thursday and Friday, so his health isn't in question for Sunday. The Lions always play worse and the Packers always play better, but Bell's reliable workload still makes an RB2-type of fantasy consideration this week.
Thu Dec 25 201417:22Joique Bell: (Achilles) Practices In Full Thursday
Bell (Achilles) practiced in full Thursday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Bell has experienced the necessary upgrade in order to achieve active status for game day. However, coach Jim Caldwell was especially coy about Bell's potential to play Sunday at Green Bay, when he told MLive.com, "We'll see." Any Achilles injury is cause for long-term concern, which is likely dominating Caldwell's thought process with the postseason imminent. Nevertheless, it would be a shock if the Lions ruled out Bell for Week 17, considering his unhinged showing in drills Thursday.
Thu Dec 25 201415:45Bell (Achilles) participated in Thursday's practice
Bell (Achilles) participated in Thursday's practice, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Bell's activity level was unclear, but more pressing is his potential availability Sunday in Green Bay. On Thursday, coach Jim Caldwell wouldn't confirm or deny that Bell is in danger of sitting out in Week 17, only telling MLive.com, "We'll see." Prior to developing the injured Achilles, Bell reached the end zone four times in as many games, which he supplemented with 310 yards on 69 carries and 120 yards on 13 catches. If he's deemed inactive in the season finale, Reggie Bush would assume top billing out of the Lions' backfield, with Theo Riddick and George Winn acting in complementary roles.
Wed Dec 24 201416:10Joique Bell: (Achilles) Limited Wednesday
Bell (Achilles) was limited in Wednesday's practice, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Bell previously dealt with an Achilles issue in Week 12 of the 2013 season, and while he didn't miss the game, he mustered just 15 yards on six rushes. Although a healthy Reggie Bush could limit Bell yet again this year, the extent of the injury is unclear, keeping the door open for their normal split workload. Bell's activity level in drills could reveal his potential for the season finale, though, so owners should continue to monitor the situation as the weekend approaches.

Bell had 13 carries for 74 rushing yards and a touchdown, as well as two catches on three targets for 13 receiving yards during Sunday's win over the Bears.
Bell did not play in the first quarter due to a violation of team rules, but he still led the team in rushing attempts and yards, though Reggie Bush scored on a 13-yard run in the first quarter before Bell entered. Nevertheless, Bell remains the clear upside back in the Lions' backfield, and he'll face off against the Packers in Week 17, with the winner taking home the NFC North title.

Bell had 15 carries for 62 yards and caught 4-of-6 targets for 41 yards in Sunday's 16-14 win over the Vikings.
The Lions had trouble scoring, getting shut out for most of the first half, but Bell still managed to go over 100 yards from scrimmage. Unfortunately for his owners, Bell's two-game touchdown streak came to an end. It's highly possible that he'll get back to the end zone next week against a mediocre Bears' rush defense.
Sun Dec 7 201417:10Bell had 18 carries for 83 yards, five catches for 50 yards, and...
Bell had 18 carries for 83 yards, five catches for 50 yards, and two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) in Sunday's 34-17 win over the Buccaneers.
The return of Reggie Bush did nothing to slow Bell, whose 18 carries were tied for the third-most he's had in a game this season. If you want to nitpick, you can point out that he had little success on the ground outside of a 57-yard run in the fourth quarter, but the biggest takeaway here is that he remains the clear top back for the Lions and has another encouraging matchup next week against the Vikings.
