Thu Dec 8 201110:52Royals nab Cesar Cabral in Rule 5 draft
Royals selected LHP Cesar Cabral from the Red Sox in the Rule 5 draft.
Cabral was also taken in last year's Rule 5 draft but failed to stick on the 25-man roster. He pitched very well in the minors in 2011, though, holding a 2.95 ERA while striking out 70 over 55 innings between High- and Double-A. Cabral can throw in the low 90s and has a nice changeup. He'll try to make the Royals' Opening Day roster as a LOOGY.

Sun Mar 13 201110:11Jays will try to work out trade for Cabral
Blue Jays manager John Farrell said the team will try to work out a trade with the Red Sox for Cesar Cabral, who they claimed off waivers Saturday.
Cabral was taken by the Rays in the Rule 5 draft, so if he doesn't stick on the 25-man roster, he'll have to be offered back to his original team. Unless, of course, a trade can be agreed to, which is what Toronto is apparently trying to work out. Farrell said that if a deal can't be agreed upon, the lefty will likely go back on waivers.

Sat Mar 12 201117:10Blue Jays claim Rule 5 pick Cabral
Blue Jays claimed LHP Cesar Cabral off waivers from the Rays.
Cabral, a Rule 5 pick out of the Red Sox farm system, had allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings this spring. Toronto's bullpen is far more crowded that Tampa Bay's was, so Cabral still figures to make his way back to the Boston organization at the end of the spring.

Sat Mar 5 201111:24Cabral a 'longshot' to stick with Rays
Rays manager Joe Maddon said Rule 5 pick Cesar Cabral is a longshot to earn a bullpen spot given that he hasn't pitched above A-ball.
The manager did add that Cabral has the stuff, which he showed off in a "B" game Friday. The 22-year-old posted a 3.63 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 45 relief appearances between Low- and High-A last season. If he fails to make the Opening Day roster, Cabral will have to be offered back to the Red Sox for $25,000.
