Dallas Braden threw 25 pitches Monday in his fifth bullpen session since surgery to repair a torn capsule muscle in his shoulder last May.
"I feel like every day we're making progress in terms of being able to stretch it out a little farther, put a little more on it, and the biggest area of focus is the bounceback," said Braden. "Everything has been positive thus far in terms of that. I've continued to get stronger." Braden is expected to open the season on the disabled list, but the hope is that he could be back when the A's need a fifth starter on April 16.

Sun Jan 29 201213:41Braden might not be ready by Opening Day
Pitching coach Curt Young thinks it's unlikely that Dallas Braden (shoulder) will be ready by Opening Day.
Braden is shooting to be available by then, but Young thinks mid-April is a more likely scenario. The A's have a couple off days early in the season, so they could just delay Braden's season debut until they need a fifth starter. The left-hander will throw from a mound Monday for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery last May, and we'll obviously have a clearer picture of his status once we see what he feels like after throwing from the bump.

Dallas Braden (shoulder surgery) thinks he "could throw a baseball right now" and insists he'll be ready for spring training.
Braden underwent surgery in mid-May to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder. Though no official timetable for him was revealed, the presumption was that he was probably a question mark for the start of next season. That might still be the case, as the reality is that it's hard for him to know at this point how far along he really is, but it does appear his rehab is going well so far.
