Brett Hayes arrived this week at the Marlins' spring training complex. | ||||||
With John Baker still in recovery mode from Tommy John surgery, Hayes is expected to open the season as the understudy to starting catcher John Buck. So the 26-year-old got down to spring training early and will look to familiarize himself with all of the Marlins' pitchers once they arrive. | ||||||

Evidently he and manager Edwin Rodriguez aren't on the same page, as Rodriguez said he thought Hayes would be out 7-10 days. Either way, it seems this could put Hayes' season in jeopardy. Brad Davis and the recently-recalled Chris Hatcher will handle catching duties while Hayes is sidelined. | ||||||

Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said Thursday that he plans to give Brett Hayes a good amount of playing time moving forward. | ||||||
Hayes played very sparingly behind the plate before landing on the disabled list in late July, but the Marlins want Ronny Paulino to get some much-needed rest. "Hayes is going to start some games," Rodriguez said. "I think I'm going to use him more than I used him before." The 26-year-old Hayes is batting .219/.306/.344 with a homer and two RBI in 32 at-bats this season. | ||||||
