Sat Jun 4 202209:26Paul Sewald Locks Down His Third Save On Friday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald put a cap on the team's 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one walk and no hits while striking out two. Sewald has now recorded the last two saves for the team and he leads the Mariners with a total of three saves on the year. Drew Steckenrider and Diego Castillo have two saves each, but neither has recorded a save since May 15. Sewald has been the most effective pitcher of the trio by a long shot this year. He has a 2.33 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP on the year. We're still likely looking at a committee approach in the bullpen, but Sewald could be emerging to the top of that committee.

Tue May 24 202209:05Paul Sewald Earns His Second Save On Monday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald converted his second save of the season on Monday. He closed out the team's 7-6 victory over the Oakland Athletics, pitching a scoreless ninth inning during which he allowed one hit and recorded one strikeout. Sewald is 2-for-3 on save opportunities on the year with a 2.40 ERA and a 0.53 WHIP. The Mariners have been operating with a frustrating committee approach this season. Sewald is now tied with both Drew Steckenrider and Diego Castillo for the team lead in saves. It seems as if all three relievers should continue to earn save chances going forward.

Sewald is mainly used in high-leverage situations but has plenty of fantasy value in leagues that reward saves and holds.

Tue Apr 26 202221:33Paul Sewald Could Return To The M's On Wednesday
Seattle Mariners interim manager Kristopher Negrn has reported that reliever Paul Sewald (illness) is back with the Mariners and could return from the COVID-19 injured list on Wednesday. Sewald has been sidelined for six days. In just four games this season, Sewald has thrown 3 2/3 innings pitched and not allowed a hit or a walk, and has struck out three. Over 62 games last season, Sewald posted a 3.06 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 104 strikeouts, 11 saves, and 16 holds in 64 2/3 IP. Sewald is one of the team's top relievers and is almost always utilized in high leverage situations. As was the case in 2021, Sewald should see a large number of hold opportunities with some save chances mixed in over the course of the season. He should be rostered in most formats, particularly in those that reward holds.

Wed Apr 20 202218:17Paul Sewald Lands On COVID-19 Injured List
The Seattle Mariners have placed relief pitcher Paul Sewald on the COVID-19 injured list. Fellow relief pitcher Penn Murfee was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move. No reason for Sewald's move to the COVID-19 injured list has been released by the team yet. The 31-year-old has been stellar over four appearances so far this year. He's pitched 3 2/3 innings and has yet to allow a walk or a hit while recording three strikeouts. He's one of the team's top setup men and could wind up seeing some saves opportunities this year as well.

Sun Oct 3 202101:31Paul Sewald Blows Save, Gets Gift Win
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald did not get the job done Saturday, giving up back-to-back walks before yielding a three-run home run to Jared Walsh in a disastrous eighth inning. He did strike out three batters in his inning of work. Sewald was fortunate that the offense bounced back in the bottom half of the inning, leaving him with a gift 10th win on the season. Sewald has been fallible of late, seeing his ERA and WHIP rise to 3.06 and 1.02 for the season. He's managed to reach 104 strikeouts in just 64 2/3 innings, which speaks to how significant his fantasy contributions have been despite lacking a consistent closer role.

Sat Sep 25 202110:55Paul Sewald Closes Door For 11th Save
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald was living dangerously Friday, allowing one hit and two walks before finally getting a groundout to first to finish a 6-5 game against the Los Angeles Angels and earn his 11th save of the season. Sewald notably entered after possible co-closer Drew Steckenrider pitched the eighth inning. Both pitchers are worth rostering as the season draws to a finish, but Sewald still appears to have the slight edge for the highest-leverage spots, and therefore is a higher priority for fantasy managers.

Fri Sep 24 202112:10Paul Sewald Allows A Run In 10th Save
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald recorded his 10th save of the year against the Oakland Athletics Thursday, giving up one run on a Matt Olson home run and striking out two batters. The Mariners now have had three different relievers save at least 10 games, which is a major league record. Sewald continues to strike out many batters, with 95 in 58 1/3 innings, but he has a 4.50 ERA in September. With save chances seemingly split with Drew Steckenrider, Sewald is much more valuable in leagues that reward holds as well.

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald recorded a five-out save against the Oakland Athletics Monday, bringing his season total to nine saves. Sewald has now had three consecutive scoreless outings after having three consecutive in which he was scored upon. He appears to be back on track, though fantasy managers who are only in search of holds will be disappointed with his high-leverage usage.

Tue Sep 14 202112:42Drew Steckenrider Follows Paul Sewald For Ninth Save
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Drew Steckenrider pitched the ninth inning against the Boston Red Sox on Monday after Paul Sewald threw an ineffective eighth and earned his ninth save of the season by striking out two without allowing a baserunner. Steckenrider now has nine saves on the year, with eight in his last 30 games. He has out-saved Sewald three to one in their past seven games each. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on this situation, and Steckenrider now holds standalone value, regardless of if roles change.

Tue Sep 14 202112:38Paul Sewald Falters In Eighth-Inning Appearance
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald allowed two solo home runs on Monday night, one each to Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers in a 5-4 victory. He was still credited for a hold with his inning of work, despite the rough outing. Sewald entered for the eighth inning in this contest, presumably to face the middle of the Boston order. He now has a 6.75 ERA with just one save in his last seven appearances. Drew Steckenrider relieved Sewald and earned the save. Sewald is still the man to roster in the Seattle pen, but fantasy managers should keep their eyes on this situation in the coming days.

Tue Sep 14 202112:14Xander Bogaerts Takes Paul Sewald Deep
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit his 21st home run of the season Monday night, going deep off Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald in the eighth inning of a 5-4 loss. Bogaerts went 2-for-4 in the game, adding a double in addition to the solo shot. Bogaerts now has two multi-hit games out of four since returning from the COVID list, though this is his first homer since going deep in back-to-back games on August 18 and 20. He's primed for a big finish to another strong year for fantasy managers.

Wed Sep 8 202100:01Paul Sewald Blows The Save Tuesday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald was unable to close the door against the division-leading Houston Astros Tuesday, picking up his fourth blown save of the season in a 5-4 10-inning loss. Sewald gave up two runs on a hit and a walk while striking out two batters in one inning of work. The cracks are showing for Sewald over his past 15 games, as he's posted a 4.02 ERA in 15 2/3 innings, though his strikeout totals remain very strong, with 26 in that time. He's in no danger of losing the job, so fantasy managers have little choice but to keep running him out there.

Thu Sep 2 202100:01Paul Sewald Locks Down Four-Out Save Wednesday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald locked down a four-out save against the Houston Astros Wednesday, striking out three batters and allowing two hits. He now has eight saves for the year to go with a 2.45 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 79 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings. Manager Scott Servais called him the team's MVP, and fantasy managers surely feel the same way, as he's gone from waiver wire add to top-10 reliever. There's no reason to think he'll slow down the rest of the way.

Sun Aug 29 202121:47Paul Sewald Allows Eighth-Inning Run
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald entered in the eighth inning Sunday, and he picked up his 11th hold of the season, though he allowed one run on three hits in his inning of work. He struck out one batter. Sewald is the top relief option for the Mariners, but that doesn't mean manager Scott Servais will hold him for save opportunities exclusively. Sewald will enter for the highest leverage outs, which may limit his fantasy value and leave some save chances for Drew Steckenrider.

Tue Aug 24 202101:35Paul Sewald Saves Seventh Game
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald saved his seventh game of the season Monday, throwing a scoreless ninth inning against the Oakland Athletics. He struck out one and did not allow a baserunner. With fellow reliever Diego Castillo on the injured list, Sewald now has minimal competition at the back end of the Seattle bullpen. Drew Steckenrider will get the occasional save opportunity, but Sewald appears to be the top dog with his 2.51 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 71 strikeouts in 43 innings. He should be rostered in all leagues.

Fri Aug 20 202112:07Paul Sewald Earns 11th-Inning Save
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald got the call in the bottom of the 11th inning Thursday, and he came through with a save against the Texas Rangers to close out a 9-8 victory. Sewald allowed one hit in an inning of work, which let one unearned run score. He struck out one batter. Sewald has staked his claim to the closer role, and his grip only got tighter as Diego Castillo could not close the door in the ninth inning. Sewald has now pitched three days in a row, so fantasy managers in daily leagues can expect him to get a day or two off.

Wed Aug 18 202101:26Paul Sewald Earns Fifth Save Tuesday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald pitched for the first time since returning from the paternity list Tuesday, entering for the ninth inning with a 3-1 lead over the Texas Rangers. He successfully shut down the opposition, allowing one hit and striking out one batter on his way to earning his fifth save of the year. There had been some question as to whether Sewald or Diego Castillo would be the closer going forward, but with Castillo pitching the eighth in this one, the job seems to be Sewald's to lose. With 65 strikeouts in 39 innings, he has all the makings of a dominant fantasy closer the rest of the way.
