Sat Jan 15 2011 | 10:35 | Batista, Snell could opt out of deals |
Both Miguel Batista and Ian Snell have opt-out clauses in the contracts they recently signed with the Cardinals. |
Batista is able to opt out if he's not guaranteed a spot on the opening day roster by the final week of spring training, while Snell can become a free agent if he's not called up by June 1. This fact enhances the odds that Batista will make the team as a swing man, which he had a pretty good shot to do, anyway. Snell is likely to serve as insurance at Triple-A, though it's possible he could give Kyle Lohse a run for his money for the final spot in the rotation. |

Fri Jan 14 2011 | 13:08 | Cardinals sign RHP Batista to minors deal |
Cardinals signed RHP Miguel Batista to a minor league contract. |
Batista, who turns 40 in February, posted a solid 3.70 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 82 2/3 innings last season, but the Nationals didn't want to give him a raise over the $1 million that he earned and neglected to offer him arbitration in November. This is a no-risk signing by St. Louis and Batista, who received an invite to spring training, could easily make the team as a swingman. |
Tue Nov 23 2010 | 14:45 | Nats do not offer arb. to Miguel Batista |
The Nationals did not offer arbitration to Miguel Batista. |
Batista, 39, registered a solid 3.70 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 82 2/3 innings this past season, but the Nationals didn't want to give him a raise over the $1 million that he earned. He could still be re-signed. |
