INF Jimmy Paredes (left wrist sprain) began a rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie on Tuesday, going 0-for-3 with a walk. He might be able to return to the Orioles in May.

IF Jimmy Paredes, who was set back in spring training by a left wrist injury and received a cortisone shot, could begin a rehab assignment Monday. Paredes hit .275 in 104 games last year.

Manager Buck Showalter said Paredes will join the major league club Monday in Tampa Bay to work out with the team. Paredes then will head out for a rehab assignment with one of the Orioles' minor league affiliates. Paredes hasn't logged a start for the Orioles since Aug. 12.

Paredes rode an unsustainable BABIP to some positive results in the first half of the season, but he's perhaps unsurprisingly fallen back to earth once his good luck ran out. Since the All-Star break, Paredes is hitting just .181 over 75 plate appearances, which has cost him his regular role as the Orioles' designated hitter. The team appears inclined to use the hot-hitting Steve Clevenger in that spot of the lineup for the time being.

Paredes is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Angels, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

The 26-year-old will head to the bench after a 3-for-19 start to August, as recent trade acquisition Junior Lake serves as the designated hitter in the series opener against Los Angeles. It's possible the two players could be used in some sort of platoon at DH moving forward, with Lake seeing starts against left-handed pitching.

Paredes is back in the lineup Tuesday and will bat second as the Orioles' DH.

Paredes has been out of the lineup since Friday, but the matchup against the right-handed Julio Teheran on Tuesday will get him back into the fold. Though Paredes is a switch hitter, he's noticeably better from the left side of the plate (.300/.328/.483) than he is batting from the right side (.227/.277/.295). That said, Paredes has struggled mightily in July with just a .186 batting average and 23 strikeouts against just three walks.

Paredes is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rays.

Paredes will be held out for the second consecutive day, as Chris Davis will be used as the designated hitter in Sunday's lineup. It's the first time since June 20 that Paredes -- who is 7-for-43 in his last 12 games -- has sat in back-to-back contests.

Paredes is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Yankees.

Paredes is mired in his worst month of the season to this point, batting just .196 in July after batting .319 in June. The Orioles will use Matt Wieters at the DH spot on Wednesday against Yankees' righty Ivan Nova.

Paredes is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Twins, Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports.

Paredes, who normally serves as the Orioles' designated hitter, will receive what appears to be a standard day off following an 0-for-9 stretch with four strikeouts in the past two games. Christian Walker will fill in for him Wednesday, batting fifth for the Orioles.

Paredes is not in the starting lineup against the White Sox on Friday night, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports.

With left-hander John Danks on the mound for Chicago, the Orioles will use Steve Pearce at first base and Matt Wieters as the DH while Caleb Joseph catches Friday night.

Paredes went 2-for-4 with his 10th homer of the year and two RBI in Wednesday's win over Texas.

In late May and early June, it started to look like Paredes' magical early-season run was done for good and he'd go back to being the mediocre-at-best hitter he's always been before this season. However, he ended up getting red-hot in the middle of last month and ended up closing June with a .319 average, which matches his current season mark. Clearly, July's off to a good start, but it's going to be hard for Paredes to sustain his .394 BABIP and 21.3 HR/FB rate -- few hitters this side of Mike Trout have the capability to do that.

Paredes is healthy, but the O's switched Adam Jones from center field to DH, meaning Paredes was no longer able to occupy his typical role at DH. Make sure he is out of daily lineups Friday.
