A's manager Bob Geren wants Michael Wuertz (hamstring) to look sharper in his rehab outings before calling him back up.
Wuertz, who will pitch for Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, got tagged for three runs in just one inning on Wednesday. That prompted Geren to say "hopefully he'll be more efficient (on Saturday), get sharp. He hasn't been sharp yet." If Wuertz looks good on Saturday, it's possible he could rejoin Oakland by as early as Monday.

It will be an "extended" outing where he'll be stretched out a bit. Wuertz was originally supposed to be activated from the DL Tuesday, but the A's want him to get a bit more work in so that he comes back sharper. The right-hander said he feels "incredible" and that "If it was up to me, I'd like to be activated today."

"It went good," Wuertz said after the workout. "I felt good. I mean a little rusty, obviously. I haven't thrown off the mound once since that Opening Night, but overall I feel good." He's expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment at some point this weekend.

Wuertz missed a good chunk of spring training with a shoulder issue and then hurt his hamstring early on in the season. He shouldn't need much time on a rehab assignment, though, so if all goes well, a return next week seems likely.

Though it looks like Andrew Bailey could be OK, Wuertz will become an even bigger part of the A's bullpen should the closer suffer a setback. He's dealt with shoulder issues this spring but should be fine to start the year as long as he doesn't hit a bump in the road.

Michael Wuertz does not anticipate needing surgery on his right thumb.
Wuertz missed the final nine games of the 2010 season because of tendinitis in his right thumb. He's hoping rest and rehab will do the trick and allow him to open spring training next season at full health. The 31-year-old righty posted a 4.31 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 39 2/3 innings this year.
