Fri Dec 10 201011:29D'Backs seriously considering Jorge Cantu
Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Diamondbacks are "seriously" considering free agent first baseman Jorge Cantu.
The D'Backs aren't likely to re-sign Adam LaRoche and can use Cantu to fill the gap. He did not have a great 2010, but he still boasts a .274/.320/.446 batting line and always found a way to big RBI numbers during his time in south Florida. The 28-year-old Cantu is also drawing interest from the Padres and Mariners, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports.

Tue Dec 7 201013:51Padres, M's, D'Backs talking with Cantu
Jorge Cantu has drawn interest this week from the Padres, Mariners and Diamondbacks, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports.
Cantu has kind of been lost in the shuffle of the other free agent corner infielders on the market this winter, but he's a decent scrap heap option and should draw interest from more than just three teams. The 28-year-old boasts a .274/.320/.446 career batting line over 2,984 at-bats.

Fri Oct 15 201016:24Cantu starting at first for Rangers
Jorge Cantu is starting at first base in Game 1 of the ALCS.
Mitch Moreland will start Saturday, but manager Ron Washington said only "we'll see" when asked who would get the start in Game 3. Cantu went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his only start of the ALDS, while Moreland had a double in each of his last three starts.

Tue Oct 12 201015:28Cantu not starting at first base in Game 5
Jorge Cantu is not starting at first base in Game 5 of the ALDS.
Cantu has not handled left-handed pitchers well this season and the Rays are featuring one of the top southpaws in the league: David Price. Mitch Moreland will draw the nod Tuesday evening and will bat eighth.

Tue Oct 12 201009:25Cantu expected to start at 1B in Game 5
Jorge Cantu is expected to start at first base for the Rangers in Game 5 of the ALDS Tuesday against the Rays.
Cantu batted just .232 against left-handed pitchers during the regular season and the Rangers will face Tampa Bay southpaw David Price in Game 5. Mitch Moreland would be the other option. "My heart wants to put Cantu in there," Rangers manager Washington said Monday. "I just have a feeling."

Mon Oct 4 201017:32Cantu to start at first in Game 1
Jorge Cantu is expected to start at first base for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Rays on Wednesday.
Rangers manager Ron Washington is playing the matchups against the left-hander David Price. Cantu batted just .234 with a 647 OPS against left-handed pitching this season, but was a real weapon against southpaws in 2009 and 2008.

Sat Sep 25 201019:29Rangers clinch first AL West crown since 1999
Jorge Cantu helped the Rangers clinch the American League West on Saturday by slugging a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning in a 4-3 win over the Athletics.
It's been a foregone conclusion for weeks, but the Rangers are officially headed to the postseason for the first time since the 1999 season. Cantu couldn't have picked a better time for his first home run (and RBI) as a member of the Rangers. He was homerless in his first 77 at-bats with the club before the eighth-inning blast. He has struggled horribly since joining the Rangers in July, but probably has a leg up to be included on the postseason roster because he is right-handed and can also play first base.
Mon Sep 6 201015:28Rangers' Cantu goes hitless in loss
Jorge Cantu went hitless in Monday's loss to the Jays and still doesn't have an RBI in 19 games with Texas.
Ugly. It's too bad the Rangers didn't just go with the guys who got them a big AL West lead. Cantu has been a disaster with his .197 average. He's gone 61 at-bats without an RBI after driving in 54 runs in 374 at-bats for the Marlins and 100 runs last year.
Mon Aug 2 201018:40Cantu to be used in platoon at first
Rangers manager Ron Washington said Jorge Cantu and Mitch Moreland will be used in a platoon at first base.
But that doesn't mean that Cantu, a right-handed batter, will be used in a strict platoon. "If we're in a position where we are facing a long run of right-handers, he will play," Washington said. "I'm not going to sit on him just because we're not facing any lefties." Cantu started against Angels' right-hander Dan Haren on Saturday, while Moreland got the start against Jered Weaver Sunday. It would seem that Cantu is at something of a disadvantage here, fantasy-wise, but remember that Moreland is an unproven commodity. He'll have to hit and field his position well for this plan to stick.

Thu Jul 29 201018:48Rangers get Cantu from Fish for two righties
Rangers acquired infielder Jorge Cantu from the Marlins for RHP Omar Poveda and RHP Evan Reed.
The deal came together quickly on Thursday afternoon and the Rangers now have their much-coveted right-handed bat. Cantu was an RBI machine at the start of the 2010 season, but he's fallen off a bit and will carry a .262/.310/.409 batting line, 10 home runs and 54 RBI into Arlington. He should see a good amount of time at first base if Chris Davis struggles.
Thu Jul 29 201016:26Rangers, Marlins agree to players for Cantu
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Rangers and Marlins have reached agreement on the players that will be sent the Marlins' way in a near-complete deal for infielder Jorge Cantu.
The Marlins will get minor league right-handers Evan Reed and Omar Poveda. Reed, 24, has posted a 1.76 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 41 innings this season between Double-A and Triple-A. Poveda, 27, is on the disabled list currently, recovering from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. Cantu will give the Rangers a solid right-handed bat for the stretch run.

Thu Jul 29 201013:36Cantu-to-Rangers deal close?
Clark Spencer of Miami Herald hears that the Marlins are close to dealing Jorge Cantu to the Rangers.
There are no other details, but the Rangers are obviously looking for a first baseman to supplant the whiffing Chris Davis, so this makes sense. Cantu would be an upgrade for now. The Marlins will probably have to pay the rest of Cantu's salary, given the Rangers ownership situation, but that also means they might get a pretty good prospect back.

Wed Jul 28 201020:48Giants out of Cantu derby?
Hank Schulman is hearing that the Giants are not "heavily considering" acquiring Marlins' infielder Jorge Cantu in a trade.
Rockies beat writer Troy Renck later vouched for how plugged in Schulman is, and said he believes the Giants re not in on Cantu, for what it's worth. The Giants could use a bat somewhere, and Cantu could push Pablo Sandoval to first base and be an offensive upgrade over Travis Ishikawa, but now it looks like they are not interested any longer.

Wed Jul 28 201013:17Cantu wants to re-sign with Marlins
Jorge Cantu told Amy K. Nelson of ESPN.com that he would like to re-sign with the Marlins this winter, regardless of whether he is traded this week.
It's not known if the interest is mutual, however it only makes sense for the Marlins to see what they can get for the impending free-agent. The Rangers have been thought to be the favorite to land Cantu in recent days, but Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported this morning that the Giants have stepped up their efforts to acquire him.

Wed Jul 28 201009:30Giants stepping up for Jorge Cantu
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Giants "have stepped up" for Jorge Cantu.
The Rangers and Rockies have also been in the mix for Cantu, but it looks like the Giants may have the advantage now. According to Rosenthal, the Marlins are believed to be looking for a young left-handed pitcher. It's not clear who the Giants are willing to offer, but prospects Eric Surkamp and Clayton Tanner would fit that description.

Tue Jul 27 201020:06Cantu benched for poor defense
Marlins interim manager Edwin Rodriguez benched Jorge Cantu out of concern over poor defense.
Rodriguez is concerned that the persistent trade rumors are affecting his play in the field. Cantu has never been known as much of a glove man to begin with, so this probably won't affect his trade value in any way. Still, it might say something if the Rodriguez thinks Wes Helms gives them a better chance to win right now.

Tue Jul 27 201017:45Cantu out of Tuesday's lineup
Jorge Cantu is out of Tuesday's starting lineup against the Giants.
Perhaps there is a trade in the works? It could be nothing, but his absence will do nothing to kill the speculation. Wes Helms will start at the hot corner in his place.

Tue Jul 27 201011:16Rox 'continue to talk' with Fish about Cantu
Tracy Ringolsby of FOXSports.com reports that the Rockies "continue to talk" with the Marlins about infielder Jorge Cantu.
Like the Rangers, who also have interest in Cantu, the Rockies are looking for a right-handed run-producer. Cantu has hit .260/.308/.410 this season with 10 home runs and 54 RBI in 366 at-bats. Moving him would allow the Marlins to free up playing time for recently-recalled prospect Logan Morrison.

Mon Jul 26 201023:22Cantu: 50-50 chance he stays with Marlins
Jorge Cantu said he thinks there's a "50-50" chance he will still be with the Marlins after Saturday's non-waiver trade deadline.
"That's a really tough question because of everything that I've been hearing now," said Cantu. "The Rangers have been coming on strong, too. I would say 50-50. I'm really comfortable here. I love playing for the Marlins." The Rangers are believed to be the favorites to land Cantu, with the Giants and Rockies also in the mix.

Mon Jul 26 201018:16Rangers 'not close' to deal for Cantu
The Marlins are "not close" to trading Jorge Cantu to the Rangers, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
A recent report by Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com suggested otherwise, but such is life leading up to the trade deadline. According to Spencer, the Rockies have "stepped up" their bid for Cantu, while the Giants remain "in the mix." The Marlins could even keep Cantu depending on how they fare against the Giants this week.
