Wed Apr 20 201100:00Angels designate Brandon Wood for assignment
Angels designated INF Brandon Wood for assignment.
The Angels plan to activate Erick Aybar from the disabled list Wednesday, so Wood gets the boot. The former top prospect has a .168 batting average over his first 493 major league plate appearances to go along with an ugly 153/13 K/BB ratio, so he has no business being on a big-league roster right now. It will be interesting to see if another team takes a chance on him.

Wed Apr 6 201116:08Angels' Wood fans three times in season debut
In his 2011 debut, Brandon Wood went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Wednesday versus the Rays.
Same old Wood. The Angels may give him a couple of more starts at shortstop if it looks like Erick Aybar will return soon, but if Aybar lands on the DL, they'll probably want to shift Maicer Izturis over and use Alberto Callaspo at third base.

Wed Mar 30 201109:29Wood on Angels' Opening Day roster
Brandon Wood has earned a spot on the Angels' Opening Day roster.
Wood entered camp out of options, but sticks around after batting .242 with four homers, 13 RBI and an ugly 16/3 K/BB ratio over 66 at-bats this spring. We're not expecting him to suddenly figure things out at the plate.

Thu Mar 24 201119:57Brandon Wood homers, drives in four
Brandon Wood homered and drove in four runs in Thursday's 11-8 loss to the Brewers.
Wood has had a nice spring, hitting .268 while belting five homers and driving in 11 runs. The latest word is that the Angels aren't likely to carry Wood on the Opening Day roster, and since he's out of options, he might be in another organization in a few weeks. If he is placed on waivers, some team is likely to see the minor league track record and take a chance on him, but Wood has a simply atrocious .169/.198/.260 batting line over 450 career major league at-bats.

Sun Mar 20 201116:28Report: Wood a longshot to make team?
Brandon Wood's odds of making the Angels appear long, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Wood hit .146/.174/.208 last season in 243 plate appearances and has fallen behind other utility options this spring. "He's put his best foot forward the last 20 at-bats, and he's played well in the field at both third base and shortstop," Scioscia said. "But there is a lot of competition for roster spots, and a lot of things are out of a player's control." Wood is out of options and will hit waivers if he doesn't make the team. Another organization could take a flier on the former first-round pick.

Mon Mar 7 201118:51Wood homers, ups spring average to .188
Brandon Wood went 2-for-5 against the Cubs on Monday, hitting his first home of the spring while driving in three runs.
Amazingly, the two-hit day upped his spring average to just .188. Almost stunningly bad in 226 at-bats last season, Wood has to show the Angels something this spring if he wants to be included on their Opening Day roster.

Fri Feb 25 201120:01Wood won't be ready for games until next week
Brandon Wood (back) hasn't been cleared to run the bases yet and likely won't be game-ready until later next week.
On the bright side, he has been taking batting practice for the last two days and is able to participate in fielding drills. Because he's out of options, Wood is in no danger of failing to make the team, but he could use a nice spring to convince manager Mike Scioscia to give him a decent number of starts at third base. Obviously he's not off to a good start.

Sat Feb 19 201111:59Brandon Wood slowed by back injury
Brandon Wood has been limited early on in camp due to a minor back injury.
It doesn't sound like anything that will hold him back long. Wood enters spring training with a job in hand because he's out of options, but he's no better than third on the depth chart at third base and shortstop. The former top prospect has batted an embarrassing .169 over 479 career plate appearances.

Tue Aug 31 201020:47Brandon Wood to play in AFL
Brandon Wood will play for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Wood wanted to play winter ball in Latin America, however he is getting married in December and ultimately opted to stay close to home. The 25-year-old is batting just .165/.190/.220 with a stunning 54/4 K/BB ratio in 185 at-bats with the Angels this season. He doesn't look any closer to figuring out how to hit in the major leagues.

Sun Jun 27 201018:45Wood hits grand slam as Angels top Rockies
Brandon Wood hit a grand slam off Rockies reliever Manny Corpas as the Angels cruised to a 10-3 win on Sunday.
Blind squirrel, meet nut. The homer was Wood's third of the season and first in 10 games since returning from a hip injury. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in his other four plate appearances on the day. We remain pessimistic that Wood will do more good than harm to the Angels, but he'll get a chance to prove us wrong while Maicer Izturis is out.
Tue Jun 15 201019:40Angels activate Brandon Wood from DL
Angels activated 3B Brandon Wood from the 15-day disabled list.
He was expected to be activated from the DL sometime this weekend, but Monday's injury to Erick Aybar changed all that. Wood hardly showed much progress with the bat during 13 games with Triple-A Salt Lake, batting just .196/.241/.255 with one home run and two RBI. We're not optimistic that he'll be much of a fantasy asset going forward.
Mon Jun 14 201023:41Wood (hip) could return from DL this weekend
Brandon Wood (hip) could return from the disabled list this weekend.
Wood homered over the weekend, but entered play on Monday with a modest .208/.240/.271 batting line over the first 12 games of his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake. The clock is ticking before he'll need to be activated from the disabled list, so there could be some tough roster decisions ahead.

Tue Jun 1 201010:04Wood plays nine innings for Triple-A
Brandon Wood (hip flexor strain) played nine innings at third base on Monday for Triple-A Salt Lake.
Wood's placement on the disabled list last week had more to do with the lack of confidence he was showing at the major league plate than a hip injury. He hit just 157/.169/.215 with 36 strikeouts through his first 122 at-bats this season. Once the third baseman shows that he can handle Triple-A pitching, perhaps the Angels will bring him back.

Tue May 25 201019:00Brandon Wood (hip) placed on DL
Angels placed INF Brandon Wood on the 15-day disabled list with a hip flexor strain.
The Angels gave him an opportunity in good faith after Chone Figgins bolted for Seattle and Wood batted just .157/.169/.215 with 36 strikeouts in 122 at-bats. That they placed him on the disabled list is an indication that they haven't completely given up on him, but they could be forced to make a difficult decision very soon, as he is out of options.
Mon May 24 201022:20Angels' Wood (hip) likely headed for DL
Brandon Wood could soon be headed to the disabled list because of a hip flexor strain.
He said the injury "crept up" on him over the past few days, but the timing is rather convenient. Wood can't get out of his own way right now, batting just .157/.169/.215 with 36 strikeouts in 122 at-bats. He hasn't managed a hit since May 17. The best-case scenario for the Angels is that he finds his swing during a minor league rehab assignment. It's worth noting that Wood is out of options.

Sun May 23 201015:50Struggling Wood told not to swing a bat
Brandon Wood, who has been mired in a season long slump to the tune of a .157/.169/.215 line, was told he was forbidden to even touch a bat on Sunday.
It's manager Mike Scioscia's way of getting him to relax and get his mind on something besides hitting. Scioscia told MLB.com's Lyle Spencer, "You want a guy's mind to relax and reboot as far as what he's doing in the batter's box -- take a couple days off and not swing a bat."

Wed Apr 28 201001:30Angels' Wood hits first homer
Brandon Wood went 3-for-4 and hit his first homer Tuesday against the Angels.
The homer was a meaningless solo shot with the Indians up 9-1 in the ninth, but it's still something. Wood has gone 6-for-8 the last two days to raise his average from .113 to .197.
Tue Apr 27 201001:33Angels' Wood goes 3-for-4
Brandon Wood had his first multihit game of the season Monday, going 3-for-4 against the Indians.
It wasn't all good news, as he did commit his fourth error. However, he upped his average from .113 to .158 and probably earned himself another start on Tuesday.
Sat Apr 24 201008:05Wood expected to return Saturday
Brandon Wood, who was given the night off Friday, is expected to return to the Angels' lineup Saturday.
The former top prospect has had an abysmal start to the year, as he's now hitting just .087/.125/.087 in 46 at-bats. He still has the backing of his manager, Mike Scioscia, who told the Los Angeles Daily News, "The frustration level is something we're going to monitor with Brandon. Naturally like any young player, you want those footprints to happen right away, and he needs to be a little patient with himself. It's a tough lesson for a young player."

Mon Apr 19 201008:48Wood struggling in first month of season
Brandon Wood is batting just .105/.128/.105 through 38 at-bats this season.
It's not exactly the kind of start that the Angels were hoping to get from the 25-year-old third baseman. If he can't break the slump soon, look for Maicer Izturis to pick up more playing time at third.
