Mon May 2 201122:52Meek diagnosed with right shoulder tendinitis
Evan Meek underwent an MRI Monday which revealed right shoulder tendinitis.
The Pirates have officially listed him as "week-to-week," so he'll likely need to stay on the DL for longer than the minimum. Meek has posted a 5.63 ERA over his first 11 appearances this season and has lost a tick or two on the radar gun. Chris Resop will likely replace him as the main set-up man for Joel Hanrahan and is worth targeting in holds leagues.

Sun May 1 201111:02Evan Meek to undergo MRI
Evan Meek will have an MRI on his shoulder Monday.
Meek doesn't foresee the MRI revealing anything significant. "It's not that bad," he said. "I expect maybe we'll find some inflammation, but what I feel right now is that I just need to get my strength back. That's it." Meek, who has a 5.63 ERA and 2.13 WHIP over 11 games, said he felt like he was pitching at "maybe at 75 percent" and needs to regain arm strength.

Sat Apr 30 201115:15Evan Meek lands on DL
Pirates placed RHP Evan Meek on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 27, with right shoulder tendinitis.
The Pirates will shut down Meek, who has a 5.63 ERA and 2.13 WHIP over 11 games, for a while in hopes that he'll be able to regain some velocity on his fastball. He should be back sometime in May. Chris Resop and Jose Veras will handle the setup duties in front of Joel Hanrahan while Meek is out.

Sat Apr 30 201110:41Evan Meek headed to DL with shoulder issue
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates are expected to place Evan Meek on the disabled list in order to allow him to regain strength in his shoulder.
Meek has dealt with what the Pirates have referred to as tightness in the shoulder for a while now, and he's been a shell of his former All-Star self this season, posting a 5.63 ERA and 2.13 WHIP over 11 games. The Pirates will shut him down for a while in hopes that he'll be able to regain some of the lost zip on his fastball. Daniel Moskos could be recalled to replace him in the bullpen, while Chris Resop and Jose Veras will handle the setup duties in front of Joel Hanrahan.

Thu Apr 28 201110:32Meek losing grip on set-up role?
The Pirates have discussed temporarily removing Evan Meek from a set-up role.
Meek is currently fighting through some weakness in his shoulder and hasn't been nearly as effective this season, posting a 5.63 ERA and 8/5 K/BB ratio over eight innings. "It's something we're talking about," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle. "I've been in conversation with Evan about everything - about his health, his ability to bounce back, those type of things. Those conversations are ongoing." Chris Resop or Jose Veras are two potential replacements for the eighth inning.

Sun Apr 10 201110:58Evan Meek says shoulder injury isn't serious
Evan Meek doesn't think his shoulder injury is serious and expects to pitch again soon.
Meek hasn't been available for the last two games after experiencing tightness in his pitching shoulder. "It is not something that's serious, but it is something where they want to give me a few extra days," said Meek. The right-hander is off to a rough start this year, giving up seven runs -- four earned -- over 2 2/3 innings.

Sat Apr 9 201110:22Evan Meek dealing with shoulder tightness
Evan Meek was unavailable to pitch Friday due to shoulder tightness.
Meek has really struggled to start off the season, so perhaps the shoulder was bothering him before he made the Pirates aware of the problem Friday. It's not clear at this point whether he might need a stint on the disabled list, but when you combine his and Ross Ohlendorf's injuries with the fact that the Pirates had to play 14 innings Friday, at least one roster move will have to be made. Daniel McCutchen is a candidate to be summoned from Triple-A.

Tue Apr 5 201105:29Meek struggles again
Evan Meek had a rough outing once again, giving up two runs without recording an out.
Meek yielded two hits and a walk on nine pitches before Mike Crotta and Joel Hanrahan bailed him out. The young reliever has ninth inning stuff, but has struggled mightily to start the season.

Sat Apr 2 201116:37Meek blows save in loss to Cubs
Evan Meek allowed five runs -- two earned -- over two-thirds of an inning in Saturday's loss to the Cubs.
Yet another blown save in the National League Central. Lyle Overbay didn't help matters by committing a fielding error, but Meek was flat-out awful. He gave up three hits, threw a wild pitch and walked a batter before being pulled for Chris Resop, who allowed the go-ahead run to score. It's only one loss, but let's just say that Joel Hanrahan's job just got a bit safer.

Evan Meek (calf) threw a successful round of live batting practice Friday in Pirates camp.

Thu Mar 3 201108:49Meek (calf) to make spring debut Monday
Evan Meek (calf) is expected to make his spring debut next Monday against the Rays.
Meek has been slowed in the early days of the exhibition schedule due to a right calf strain. He threw a bullpen session Tuesday and is scheduled to throw another one Friday, so it looks like the injury is behind him. The 27-year-old right-hander is expected to open the season as a set-up man for closer Joel Hanrahan.

Sun Feb 27 201109:11Meek (calf) throws 30-pitch side session
Evan Meek (calf) threw a 30-pitch side session on Sunday.
Meek was shut down for a couple of days last week with a mild strain of his right calf. He reported no abnormal pain or discomfort during or after his side session Sunday, though, and should now be able to get back on track with the other pitchers in Pirates camp. The righty will serve as a setup man to start the 2011 season.

Fri Feb 25 201108:49Meek (calf) hoping to resume throwing soon
Evan Meek (calf) is hoping to resume throwing in the next couple of days.
Meek was scratched from a bullpen session earlier this week because of a mild strain in his right calf. He threw long toss on Thursday, though, and should step back on a mound sometime this weekend. "It's nothing major," Meek said Friday morning. "I'll miss maybe another day or two, that's it." The right-hander will operate in a setup role behind Joel Hanrahan this season.

Thu Feb 24 201110:59Meek dealing with strained calf
Evan Meek is currently limited in workouts due to a strained calf.
It's still very early in camp, so the Pirates aren't going to push him. Meek posted a 2.14 ERA and 70/31 K/BB ratio over 80 innings last season, but new skipper Clint Hurdle recently chose Joel Hanrahan to be his closer to begin the season. It's probably the right move, but fantasy owners should keep an eye on Meek in case Hanrahan struggles in the role.

Fri Jan 14 201102:56Pirates to pick closer before spring training
Pirates GM Neil Huntington wants the team's closer decision finalized before spring training begins.
Evan Meek and Joel Hanrahan enter 2011 as the front-runners. Meek had a breakout season in 2010, finishing with a 2.14 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 80 innings. Hanrahan was a bit more pedestrian at 3.62 and 1.21, respectively. The Pirates finished last in saves (31) in 2010 and third worst (28) in 2009, due in part to pitching and run support at or near the league bottom. Whomever the Pirates select as closer in the coming weeks, his value likely will be limited.

Mon Sep 13 201018:13Meek will get save chances down the stretch
The Pirates plan to give Evan Meek some save chances down the stretch.
Joel Hanrahan has seen most of the save opportunities in Pittsburgh since Octavio Dotel was traded to the Dodgers, but Meek also has an impressive skill set and should do fine in the role. Both relievers are under contract for 2011 and will engage in an intriguing duel for the Bucs' ninth-inning job next spring. For what it's worth, our money is on the harder-throwing Hanrahan.

Mon Sep 6 201011:35Pirates' Meek likely available on Monday
Evan Meek (hand) is believed to be available Monday.
Meek hasn't pitched since last weekend, when he was drilled on his throwing hand by a comebacker. He's likely to remain in a setup role through the end of the season with Joel Hanrahan continuing to close games.

Sat Sep 4 201012:27Meek could rejoin bullpen soon
Evan Meek (hand) was able to throw off a mound Friday and could rejoin the Pirates bullpen over the weekend.
The right-hander hasn't pitched since being hit on the hand by a comebacker Sunday. "Evan's doing very well. We'll just see how he goes," Pirates manager John Russell said. "I can't really pinpoint a specific date. We're looking that he should be back pitching relatively soon." Meek has shared closing duties with Joel Hanrahan since the Octavio Dotel trade, with Hanrahan receiving four saves chances to Meek's two.

Tue Aug 31 201011:48Meek expects to be available by the weekend
Evan Meek (hand) expects to be available by the weekend.
Meek was nailed in the hand by a Ryan Braun line drive in the eighth inning Sunday. But the hand looked relaxed in the clubhouse on Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and he should be back to setup duties by Saturday. "I got very lucky," he said.
