DETROIT (AP) — Tigers right-hander Mike Fiers has left Detroit's game against Cincinnati on Wednesday with a left lower shin bruise.Fiers was hit by a comebacker off the bat of Mason Williams in the top of the second inning. He was able to finish that inning, but Drew VerHagen relieved him to start the third. X-rays were negative.Fiers is 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA. DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have designated right-hander Drew VerHagen for assignment and recalled outfielder Mike Gerber from Triple-A Toledo.The team announced the moves Monday. The Tigers had the day off before playing at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.VerHagen is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in nine relief appearances this season. He took the loss Sunday against Kansas City, walking two of the three hitters he faced.Gerber made his major league debut Friday night as a pinch runner. RHP Drew VerHagen narrowly missed getting tagged with a defeat Friday after getting victimized for a tiebreaking home run by 1B Edwin Encarnacion leading off the sixth inning. Detroit tied the score again in the eighth to get VerHagen off the hook.

RHP Drew VerHagen got a reprieve from being sent to the minors Sunday when Detroit optioned RHP Bruce Rondon instead. The Tigers will need a roster space Monday so they can activate RHP Michael Fulmer to start at Texas. VerHagen was the likely choice since he had made two starts in Fulmer's place, but when Rondon stumbled Sunday (throwing just one strike out of nine pitches) it caused the organization to keep VerHagen and shift him to the bullpen, where manager Brad Ausmus believes he fits better.

RHP Drew VerHagen got hit hard in his second major league start of the season Thursday. VerHagen surrendered six runs on nine hits, including five extra-base hits, in 3 2/3 innings. VerHagen gave up two runs in five innings in his first start against Baltimore last weekend. He has been filling in for injured Michael Fulmer, who could return to the rotation as early as next week. "Across the board, I was a little bit erratic," VerHagen said

RHP Drew VerHagen made his first start of the season and second of his career Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. He worked five innings, which matched the length of his previous start, and allowed a pair of runs on four hits. He struck out three, walked two and did not factor into the decision.

RHP Drew VerHagen will be the starter in Saturday's game with the Orioles, Detroit manager Brad Ausmus confirmed after Friday's win. VerHagen is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two games this season. He was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on July 24 and pitched twice in relief since then, taking over for RHP Michael Fulmer, placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 1, due to right elbow ulnar neuritis.

RHP Drew VerHagen was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Monday to fortify a weary bullpen. He was the losing pitcher on Monday, giving up two solo homers in the 12th inning to Kansas City after tossing two scoreless frames. He has started 19 games with the Mud Hens this season, posting a 7-7 record and 4.90 ERA. He made 19 relief appearances with the Tigers last season and that's where manager Brad Ausmus believes VerHagen's future is in the major leagues. "I know he'd like to start," Ausmus said. "If you ask me, I think he's a reliever because his stuff plays (well) as a reliever."

RHP Drew VerHagen (right shoulder thoracic outlet surgery in August 2016) underwent a successful operation. He is expected to be ready for spring training.

RHP Drew VerHagen was moved from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list on Monday, reducing the Tigers' roster to 39 players. VerHagen has been trying to rehab a nerve compression in his right shoulder that causes numbness in his pitching hand. The open roster spot gives Detroit room to add a player.

RHP Drew VerHagen was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following Sunday's game with RHP Buck Farmer brought up to replace him. VerHagen gave up three hits and two runs in one inning of relief Sunday to raise his ERA with Detroit to 7.11. "I think Drew's got chance to be a really good pitcher," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He can pitch anywhere in the game. I think eventually he can be a back-end of the bullpen type reliever. But right now he's having trouble throwing strikes. He's a little off in terms of commanding the ball, fastball and the curveball. We just want him to go down there and straighten himself out. We really like him a lot. He's a guy who throws 95, he's 6-5, there's a lot to like about him. But right now think he could use some time honing his skills."

VerHagen has ground out two holds in the last week and now sits with a 2.38 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 22.2 innings out of the Tigers' bullpen. Opponents are hitting just .218 off him.

He's not whiffing guys, but instead is relying on a sinker that induces a lot of ground ball outs. We'd like to see him get a handle on his control, though, as he's racked up more walks (13) than strikeouts (11).

VerHagen was recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday, Matthew Mowery of the Oakland Press reports.

VerHagen will return to Detroit for the first time in more than a month to help bolster a bullpen that pitched 6.9 innings in Tuesday's win over Boston. In his lone appearance for the Tigers on the season, VerHagen allowed one hit and two earned runs while issuing four walks in one inning.

VerHagen was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Matthew Mowery of The Oakland Press reports.

It appears VerHagen will be the scapegoat for another poor outing by Justin Verlander, as he provided little relief Sunday, allowing two runs on a hit and four walks in his one inning of duty. Ian Krol was recalled from Toledo to take VerHagen's place in the bullpen.

VerHagen was recalled from Double-A Erie on Friday.

The 24-year-old righty will take a spot in the middle of the Tigers' bullpen and is unlikely to see many high-leverage looks. He gave up three runs in a five-inning spot start with the Tigers earlier this year but has been working as a reliever at Triple-A and Double-A, notching eight strikeouts in 11 innings of relief.

The Tigers are converting VerHagen to a reliever in the minors, reports MLive.com. He had worked exclusively as a starter since Detroit selected him in the fourth round in 2012.

He finished last season on the DL because of a back injury and came into this season with the same ailment. He returned from the disabled list this month and has appeared in three games out of the pen. The Tigers hope he'll see an uptick in velocity and sharper secondary offerings following the move.
