Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox are interested in Eric Chavez.
General manager Ben Cherington has said that he'd like to add a first baseman who can also play an additional position, and it appears Chavez is on his wish list. The 36-year-old batted .281/.348/.496 with 16 home runs for the Yankees in 2012, and they're also interested in retaining him.

Eric Chavez's agent, Scott Leventhal, said his client has "no ientention" of retiring.
"Chavy has no intention of retiring," Leventhal said. "We have spoken to and met with multiple clubs regarding his future in baseball." The Yankees are in the market for someone that can offer insurance for Alex Rodriguez at third base, though it's not clear how interested they are in bringing Chavez back. He batted .281/.348/.496 with 16 home runs for them in 2012.

Thu Aug 16 201211:49Chavez not in Wednesday's lineup
Eric Chavez is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Rangers.
Casey McGehee is making the start at third base against the left-hander Derek Holland. The Yankees appear content to use a platoon, but the hot-hitting Chavez should still get most of the playing time and is worth considering if you need to fill a corner infielder (CI) spot.

Thu Aug 16 201200:16Eric Chavez reaches base four times in win
Eric Chavez went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and walk in Wednesday's win over the Rangers.
Chavez has now reached base at least twice in eight of his nine August starts, upping his slash from an already solid .265/.330/.471 to .303/.362/.547. He's worth a temporary own in 10-12 team mixed leagues if you're hurting for corner-infield help.

Eric Chavez (back) is in the Yankees' lineup Monday.

Tue Aug 7 201222:41Chavez smashes two-run homer in losing effort
Eric Chavez continued to swing a hot bat in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers, going 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBI.
The 34-year-old third baseman is doing a nice job picking up the slack in the absence of Alex Rodriguez. He's now hitting .280 with 11 homers and 26 RBI in 186 at-bats, including three bombs in his last six starts. In deeper leagues, he's worthy of a look as a corner infield option until A-Rod is able to return.

Fri Jul 27 201222:38X-rays on Chavez's leg come back negative
X-rays on Eric Chavez's right leg came back negative.
Chavez left Friday's game against the Red Sox after being hit in the right shin by a pitch. He had his leg wrapped in the clubhouse after the game, but remarked that it looked worse than it felt. It sounds like a day-to-day situation.

Fri Jul 27 201209:06Yanks to stick with Chavez, Nix at 3B
The Yankees plan to stick with a platoon of Eric Chavez and Jayson Nix at third base while Alex Rodriguez (hand) is sidelined.
"If anything makes sense in our work, we'll take a second look at it," general manager Brian Cashman said. "But I don't think we have to do anything." Chavez has a solid .266/.328/.468 batting line with eight homers this season, so having him on the long side of a platoon could be worse. Both he and Nix are worth owning in AL-only leagues.

Wed Jun 27 201216:37Eric Chavez knocks in three runs for Yankees
Eric Chavez had a two-run double and an RBI single against the Indians on Wednesday.
Chavez isn't getting a lot of action, but he's hitting very well when the opportunity presents itself. He's 5-for-10 with two homers since June 20, and he's batting .277/.331/.482 overall.

Sun May 13 201216:19Eric Chavez has two-hit day
Eric Chavez went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored in Sunday's loss to the Mariners.
Chavez is now 3-for-7 since coming off the seven-day disabled list. Aside from his recent concussion, Chavez is as healthy as he's been in years, and is worth consideration in deeper mixed leagues as a bench bat you can start against right-handed pitching.

Eric Chavez (concussion) has not been cleared by Major League Baseball to return yet.
Chavez thinks he's back to normal, but evidently he didn't pass concussion test administered by MLB Wednesday. It's not clear when he'll take another one, but he won't be allowed to return before he passes it.

Major League Baseball will inform the Yankees Thursday if Eric Chavez (concussion) has been cleared to return from the 7-day disabled list.
The decision will be based off concussion tests Chavez took Wednesday. "It took a while," Chavez said. "But today I can honestly say I feel 100 percent." The 34-year-old was hitting .290 (9-for-31) with three homers and five RBI prior to landing on the disabled list last week.

Fri May 4 201208:55Eric Chavez 'a lot clearer'
Eric Chavez (concussion) has been released from the hospital, and manager Joe Girardi said Chavez is "a lot clearer."
Chavez was receiving head and spine scans, and although he's been placed on the DL with a concussion, it appears that he's been cleared of any spinal issues. Still, we'd be surprised if he was ready to go when his seven days were up.

Wed May 2 201221:13Eric Chavez leaves with possible concussion
Updating an earlier item, Eric Chavez left Wednesday's game due to whiplash and a possible concussion.
The injury evidently happened in the field, but it suddenly hit Chavez while he was at the plate, as he looked dazed and had to be led off the field by trainers. He'll go to the hospital to receive head and spine scans. We'll update his status when more is known.

Mon Apr 30 201221:35Eric Chavez goes deep
Eric Chavez accounted for the Yankees' only runs in Monday's win over the Orioles, launching a two-run homer.
Chavez's bomb in the second inning is all the scoring the Yanks would need. The veteran bench player has given the team solid work this year, batting .321 with three longballs over 28 at-bats. He should continue to be a valuable role player.

Wed Mar 28 201217:21Eric Chavez knocks in three runs
Eric Chavez had three hits and drove in three of the Yankees' five runs on Wednesday.
Raul Ibanez has struggled, but Chavez wasn't doing anything to push himself into the DH mix until today. He had been hitting .167 with one RBI in 30 at-bats this spring. He probably won't have any fantasy value unless injuries strike the Yankees.

Chavez agreed to the deal last Tuesday. It was then finalized this week after the 34-year-old reported to Yankees camp in Tampa, Florida and passed his physical. He will function as a backup third baseman and pinch-hitter in 2012 for the Bombers after batting 263/.320/.356 across 175 plate appearances in 2011.

Tue Feb 21 201220:15Yanks, Eric Chavez agree to one-year contract
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Yankees and Eric Chavez have agreed to a contract, pending a physical.
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Chavez will receive a one-year deal worth $900,000. The 34-year-old was limited to just 58 games with New York last season due to a fractured foot, batting .263/.320/.356 over 175 plate appearances. It's unlikely he'll be able to stay healthy, but he projects as Alex Rodriguez's primary backup at third base this season.

Mon Feb 20 201217:13Yanks won't budge from $1M for Eric Chavez
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Yankees won't budge higher from around $1 million on a contract for Eric Chavez.
Sounds pretty reasonable for a player with Chavez's lengthy injury history. The 34-year-old was limited to just 58 games with New York last season due to a fractured foot, batting .263/.320/.356 across 175 plate appearances. If re-signed, he'll serve as a backup to Alex Rodriguez at third base.

Mon Feb 20 201209:55Yanks, Chavez expected to reach agreement
ESPN's Andrew Marchand reports that the Yankees and Eric Chavez are "expected to come to an agreement."
Marchand says the Yankees "like the idea of adding Chavez as a valet for Alex Rodriguez" at third base. And the A.J. Burnett trade has freed up enough cash to make a signing more financially feasible. Look for the two sides to intensify contract negotiations this week.
