Mon Nov 4 201322:56Joel Hanrahan ahead of schedule
Joel Hanrahan (elbow) will throw from 120 feet on flat ground this week.
Hanrahan's initial timetable after undergoing Tommy John and flexor tendon surgery in mid-May was as long as 16 months, but MassLive.com's Evan Drellich says the reliever is "well ahead of schedule." A free agent this winter, Hanrahan will probably look for an incentive-laden, one-year deal as he attempts to rebuild his value.

Sun Oct 20 201323:20Joel Hanrahan to start throwing from 75 feet
Joel Hanrahan (elbow) will begin throwing from a distance of 75 feet on Monday as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery and flexor tendon surgery.
Hanrahan underwent both procedures in mid-May and was given a 12-to-14 month timetable for his recovery, putting an expected return somewhere around the All-Star break in 2014. The hard-throwing 32-year-old right-hander represents a low-risk, high-reward option on the free agent market this offseason.

Fri May 17 201319:48Joel Hanrahan anxious to begin rehab from TJ
Joel Hanrahan was upbeat after undergoing successful surgery to repair a torn right flexor tendon, as well as Tommy John surgery on Thursday and is anxious to begin his rehab.
Hanrahan will be in a cast for ten days, but will be ready to start the recovery process on day 11. Regardless of how quickly he begins the recovery process, he's looking at a 12-to-14 month timetable for his return. Hanrahan, who is a free agent after the season, is a long way away from having any tangible fantasy value.

Thu May 16 201319:46Joel Hanrahan undergoes Tommy John surgery
Joel Hanrahan underwent Tommy John surgery in addition to flexor tendon surgery on his right elbow Thursday.
He also had bone spurs removed from the elbow. The flexor tendon repair was expected, but the hope is that Hanrahan wouldn't need Tommy John. As it is, he'll now be sidelined well into the 2014 season. Hanrahan is slated for free agency this winter.

Hanrahan was hoping to rehab the injury, but the damage is extensive and needs to be surgically repaired. As of now, he's expected to visit with Dr. James Andrews next week to have the procedure done. Hanrahan, 31, is very unlikely to be back with the Red Sox and is set to become a free agent in 2014.

Fri May 10 201316:33Joel Hanrahan has damage to flexor tendon
Joel Hanrahan was diagnosed with damage to the flexor tendon in his right elbow.
The flexor tendon is what protects the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. Hanrahan has yet to decide whether he will rest and rehab the injury or undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. Either way, he is facing an extended absence.

Mon May 6 201322:56Hanrahan leaves game with undisclosed injury
Joel Hanrahan left Monday's game against the Twins with an apparent injury.
It's not clear if he aggravated his hamstring injury or if something else is wrong. Hanrahan struggled in the outing before the injury, serving up a game-tying homer and walking a batter before being removed. The Red Sox should update his status after the game. Fantasy owners will want to go out and grab Koji Uehara just in case.

Mon May 6 201316:49Hanrahan closing for at least the next week
Joel Hanrahan will close for the Red Sox with Andrew Bailey (biceps) on the disabled list.
Hanrahan had already been closing for the past week with Bailey unavailable. With his injury backdated to April 29, Bailey will be eligible to return as early as next week, but weekly-league owners should be able to squeeze at least two weeks of stopper-duties out of Hanrahan. The former Pirate could easily keep the role once he was acquired for if he pitches well in Bailey's absence.

Thu May 2 201322:44Joen Hanrahan records fourth save
With Andrew Bailey apparently unavailable, Joel Hanrahan earned his fourth save Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Hanrahan gave up a single in a 3-1 game before getting a double play to finish it. The Red Sox announced that they'd use Hanrahan in a setup role for now after activating him Tuesday, but that changed after just one appearance, perhaps because of an injury to Bailey.

Tue Apr 30 201313:22Joel Hanrahan (hamstring) activated from DL
Red Sox activated RHP Joel Hanrahan from the 15-day disabled list.
Hanrahan allowed two runs in one inning in his first rehab appearance last week, but he bounced back Sunday with a scoreless inning. That was apparently enough to convince the Red Sox that he was ready to return. While there has been some speculation that he would get the closer role back, Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated during an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Tuesday that Andrew Bailey will keep the job.

Sun Apr 28 201309:25Joel Hanrahan expected to get closer job back
Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe writes that "it is expected" that Joel Hanrahan (hamstring) will return to the ninth inning when he is activated from the disabled list.
Andrew Bailey has converted five of six save chances since Hanrahan went on the DL and has looked dominant of late, but it appears that Hanrahan will get his job back. He'll need to perform, though, in order to hold Bailey off. Hanrahan is expected to be activated from the DL on Tuesday.

Sat Apr 27 201319:31Hanrahan hopes to return to Red Sox Tuesday
Joel Hanrahan (hamstring) will make another rehab appearance with Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday, then hopes to return to the Red Sox bullpen for Tuesday's series opener against the Blue Jays.
Hanrahan has adjusted his mechanics during his rehab stint, and reiterated Saturday that he no longer had any hamstring problems. It's unclear how Red Sox skipper John Farrell will handle the closer's role upon Hanrahan's return, but with Andrew Bailey pitching well in the role, he could have a tough decision on his hands.

Fri Apr 26 201321:02Hanrahan surrenders homer in rehab outing
Joel Hanrahan (hamstring) surrendered a two-run homer during his first rehab outing with Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday.
Hanrahan should only need a couple of rehab outings before he's deemed ready to return to the Red Sox bullpen. With Andrew Bailey pitching extremely well in the closer's role though, manager John Farrell looks he he could be faced with a very difficult decision shortly.

He will throw another bullpen session on Wednesday and could embark on a minor league rehab assignment Friday. Andrew Bailey is serving as Boston's ninth-inning man for now.

Fri Apr 19 201308:57Hanrahan has renewed soreness in hamstring
Joel Hanrahan felt renewed soreness in his right hamstring when he threw on flat ground Thursday.
The Red Sox had hoped he could throw from a mound soon, but that now won't happen for at least a few days. "While he's making progress, that hasn't cleared up 100 percent," manager John Farrell said of Hanrahan's hamstring. While Hanrahan suffered what appears to be a mini-setback Thursday, Andrew Bailey was nailing down his second save in as many days in impressive fashion. If Bailey gets hot, it's possible Hanrahan won't have a closer job once healthy.
