Sun Mar 27 201116:40Rays' Shoppach hits fourth homer
Kelly Shoppach launched his fourth homer Sunday off the Pirates' Paul Maholm.
Shoppach is batting just .237 this spring, but with four homers in 38 at-bats, he's sporting a nice .894 OPS. He figures to get most of the starts behind the plate with the Rays are facing left-handers, and since he's a stronger defender than John Jaso, the potential for regular playing time is a possibility if he gets off to a hot start.

Sat Aug 14 201019:23Shoppach homers twice in win over Orioles
Kelly Shoppach homered twice in the Rays' 7-3 win over the Orioles on Saturday at Tampa's Tropicana Field.
Shoppach hit a four-run homer in the fourth inning and added a solo shot in the eighth. He is batting .209/.348/.352 with three home runs and 11 RBI this season as the Rays' second catcher.
Thu Jun 24 201015:48Rays' Shoppach hits first homer
Kelly Shoppach went 3-for-4 and hit his first homer of the season Thursday versus the Padres.
Shoppach was making just his third start in two weeks, but maybe things will start to change now. John Jaso has been just average since April, and Shoppach is the better defender of the two. If Shoppach is hitting -- and he's come in at .290 with seven walks in his 31 at-bats this season -- then he's the better player of the two.
Fri Jun 4 201010:26Rays activate Shoppach from DL
Rays activated C Kelly Shoppach from the 15-day disabled list.
Shoppach has been sidelined since undergoing right knee surgery in April. Replacing the injured Jason Bartlett with Shoppach will provide the Rays with some extra time to decide who is the odd man out between Dioner Navarro and John Jaso.
Fri May 28 201018:15Shoppach (knee) begins rehab on Monday
Kelly Shoppach (knee) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham next Monday.
He's expected to stay there for an entire week, alternating days between catching and being the designated hitter. He'll begin by catching five innings on Monday until he progresses to a full nine innings on the seventh day. The pressure is on Dioner Navarro.

Thu May 27 201021:01Shoppach to begin rehab assignment soon
Kelly Shoppach (knee) is expected to begin a rehab assignment this weekend or early next week.
Shoppach ran the bases Thursday at Tropicana Field and even did some sliding drills. "He seems to be in good order," manager Joe Maddon said. "Everything looked pretty good. There's been no complaints." Shoppach is probably about 10 days away, meaning Dioner Navarro's clock is ticking.

Mon May 24 201018:10Shoppach (knee) could begin rehab this week
Rays manager Joe Maddon said that Kelly Shoppach (knee) could begin a minor league rehab assignment as soon as this week.
Shoppach is currently working his way back from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. It's not clear how long it will be before Shoppach is activated from the disabled list, but with John Jaso performing well, it's possible that Dioner Navarro could finally be given the heave-ho.

Tue May 11 201013:41Shoppach had good workout, getting closer
Kelly Shoppach (knee) had a "real good" cardiovascular workout in a pool over the weekend, according to Rays manager Joe Maddon.
"When he got out of the pool, he felt great," Maddon said. Shoppach underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in mid-April and was given a four-to-six week timetable. He should be ready by early June, at which point the Rays will have to decide whether to demote Dioner Navarro or John Jaso.

Sat Apr 17 201019:23Rays fear Shoppach could require knee surgery
Kelly Shoppach could be headed for knee surgery.
Shoppach was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee sprain earlier this week, but the fear is that his injury is worse than initially thought. "It could be," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It could be, yes." Shoppach will meet with the team's doctor on Monday. At that consultation, it's possible he could be told that the injury will require surgery. Stay tuned.

Tue Apr 13 201016:43Rays place Shoppach (knee) on disabled list
Rays placed C Kelly Shoppach on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 11, with a right knee sprain.
This explains why we haven't seen him since Saturday. Shoppach was 2-for-8 (.250) to kick off the new season. Dioner Navarro will draw the majority of starts in his absence with the newly-recalled John Jaso backing him up.
Wed Apr 7 201015:55Shoppach to start on Wednesday
Kelly Shoppach will start behind the plate against the Orioles on Wednesday night.
Dioner Navarro drew the start in Tuesday's season opener, although Shoppach chipped in with a pinch-hit double. The two will share playing time, at least initially, but Shoppach has the ability to hit 15-20 home runs again. He's worth putting on an early watch list in mixed leagues.
