Sun Feb 24 201308:41Eagles interested in CB Sean Smith?
CSN Philly's Geoff Mosher says the Eagles are interested in free agent CB Sean Smith, but at the right price.
Smith's price continues to rise, and latest reports are that he's seeking "at least" $24 million guaranteed. Philadelphia is bone dry in the secondary with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie a free agent and Nnamdi Asomugha looking at possibly getting released. After those two, there isn't much to work with.

Sat Feb 23 201315:30Sean Smith looking for $24M guaranteed
Free agent CB Sean Smith is reportedly looking for "at least" $24 million guaranteed on his next deal.
Smith and his agent were said to be using Titans CB Jason McCourty's contract as a baseline for negotiations, and McCourty received $20 million guaranteed on his six-year, $43 million deal. Smith, 25, is looking for outrageous numbers, and a source close to Smith "laughed" when asked if there have been productive talks with the Dolphins. The Palm Beach Post says not to rule out Miami using the transition tag on Smith.

Thu Feb 21 201313:23Ireland had 'optimistic' talks with CB Smith
Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland described a recent meeting with free agent CB Sean Smith's agent as "optimistic."
"But we still have a long way to go," added Ireland. Smith is seen as a candidate for the franchise tag by the Palm Beach Post, and Ireland hinted earlier in the day that he knew who he was going to use it on already. Smith is said to be seeking $8 million annually on his next contract.

Thu Feb 21 201311:52Dolphins will use the franchise tag
GM Jeff Ireland said the Dolphins will likely use the franchise tag.
Furthermore, Ireland hinted that he already knows who he is going to tag, but declined to reveal a name. The two most logical candidates are CB Sean Smith and DT Randy Starks, although the Miami Herald has been reporting that Smith will not be tagged. Jake Long is also a free agent, but tagging him would cost $15.365 million.

Mon Feb 18 201320:13Report: Colts interested in CB Sean Smith
The Anderson Herald Bulletin's George Bremer says the Colts "could look to reunite" free agent CB Sean Smith with ex-Dolphins teammate CB Vontae Davis.
Smith, of course, is in limbo with the Dolphins on whether he will be franchise-tagged or not. According to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post, 25-year-old Smith is said to be looking for $8 million annually on his next contract. Currently, the Colts are about $43 million under the salary cap for 2013. Smith would certainly be an upgrade on Jerraud Powers and company.

Mon Feb 18 201318:58Report: Dolphins will not tag CB Sean Smith
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald insists the Dolphins will not use the franchise tag on free agent CB Sean Smith.
"The Dolphins will NOT use their tag on Sean Smith," tweeted Salguero. "Period." The Herald and the Palm Beach Post have been in complete disagreement over this issue for the entire offseason. The Post reported earlier on Monday that Smith was "preparing" for the tag, but "rooting strongly against it." Teams could start tagging players on Monday, and they can do so all the way up until March 4.

Sun Feb 10 201308:52Fins, CB Smith 'not close;' won't be tagged
The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero says the Dolphins and impending free agent CB Sean Smith are "not close" on a new contract, and adds that Smith will not be franchised.
The Herald has always been of the belief that Smith will either get a new deal from the Dolphins or he will reach the free-agent market, while the Palm Beach Post reported at the end of December that Smith would "almost certainly" be tagged if a long-term agreement wasn't reached. Smith is tentatively expected to target $8-10 million annually on his next deal, but Miami doesn't value him at that price.

Fri Feb 8 201319:07Free agent CB Smith wants $8-10M per season
Free agent CB Sean Smith is expected to seek $8-10 million annually on the open market.
Smith and his agent anticipate a deal somewhere between Brandon Carr (five years, $50 million) and Jason McCourty (five years, $43 million). Per the Miami Herald, the Dolphins don't believe Smith is worth that much and for good reason. Although very physically gifted and only 25, Smith struggles versus smaller, quicker receivers, and Pro Football Focus charted him with more combined first downs and touchdowns allowed than any NFL cornerback in 2012.

Fri Jan 25 201313:16Sean Smith expected to reach free agency
The Miami Herald confirms that CB Sean Smith is likely to reach free agency without a deal in place with the Dolphins.
Smith and his agent are using Jason McCourty's six-year, $43 million contract as a baseline in negotiations, and plugged-in columnist Armando Salguero considers that too rich even for the cap-rich Dolphins. Per Salguero, the Fins view Smith as more of a "good player" as opposed to a "game changer or playmaker."

Sun Jan 6 201310:35Smith and Fins far apart on contract talks
Per the Palm Beach Post, the Dolphins and impending free agent CB Sean Smith are "far apart" on contract talks.
Smith is said to be seeking a deal similar to the one Jason McCourty received from the Titans in August -- six years, $43 million, $20 million guaranteed. Miami is reportedly valuing Smith at a much lesser amount. The Dolphins will have until March 9 to negotiate with their long, physical corner, but it's almost certain that Smith will test the free-agent market.

Mon Dec 31 201210:40Report: Phins won't franchise CB Sean Smith
Contrary to a previous report to the contrary, the Miami Herald insists the Dolphins "have no intention" of using the franchise tag on CB Sean Smith.
Smith has been a solid starter, coming in especially handy against physical receivers, but he's not deemed worthy of the $10 million tag reserved for elite corners. According to the Herald, the Dolphins would have to "think long and hard" before offering even half of that $10 million on an annual basis. Smith will likely opt to test free-agent waters.

Sat Dec 29 201215:13Fins will consider franchise tag for CB Smith
According to the Palm Beach Post, the Dolphins will "almost certainly" use the franchise tag on CB Sean Smith if they can't agree on a long-term deal this offseason.
The Post lists Brian Hartline as the only other option for the franchise tag in Miami, but the team may not consider him a true No. 1 receiver. Smith, 25, has the measurables at 6-foot-3, 218 pounds and plays a position that every team covets. He's tied a career-high with 12 pass break-ups and two interceptions this season, and he always shadows the opposing team's No. 1 receiver.

Tue Dec 25 201217:45Dolphins CB Smith has chance to play Sunday
Dolphins CB Sean Smith (knee) "could" play in Week 17 versus the Patriots.
After Smith's Monday MRI only revealed a bone bruise, Miami's top cornerback expressed a high level of relief that the injury wasn't more serious. If Smith plays on Sunday, he'd likely shadow Brandon Lloyd, whom he held to just one catch for ten yards in Week 12. More importantly, Smith is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason and should be highly-coveted.

Mon Dec 24 201211:08Sean Smith escapes with a bone bruise
Dolphins CB Sean Smith has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his knee.
Smith was relieved to learn he avoided any ligament tears as he enters free agency. "I'm BACK!!! Other than my son being born this is the Happiest Day of my life, GOD is GOOD," he Tweeted Monday morning. Smith will attracted significant interest on the open market as a capable shadow corner.

Sun Dec 23 201219:07Sean Smith to undergo Monday MRI on knee
Dolphins CB Sean Smith will undergo a Monday MRI on his injured left knee.
Per beat writer Adam Beasley, there is "no early word" on the injury's extent. Smith had a mostly solid season in his debut as a shadow corner for the Dolphins, frequently matched up with opposing No. 1 receivers. He's scheduled for unrestricted free agency in 2013, so the injury is an offseason concern.

Sun Dec 23 201215:10Dolphins CB Sean Smith exits with knee injury
Dolphins CB Sean Smith was forced from Sunday's game with a knee injury and is questionable to return.
Smith was injured on the opening drive in the second half and can probably be ruled out for the game. Bryan McCann has replaced him in the starting lineup.

Mon Oct 1 201214:36Sean Smith matching up with No. 1 receivers
Dolphins CB Sean Smith asked the coaching staff to let him match up with No. 1 wide receivers going forward, and he responded by helping to hold Larry Fitzgerald to 64 yards in Week 4.
Fitzgerald scored a touchdown, but it came on a wide receiver screen where Fitz lined up in the slot. Smith is an outside corner and that wasn't his coverage assignment on that particular play. Smith came down with two interceptions and tackled well, allowing Fitzgerald to do little after the catch. This is a big year for Smith, as it's the final season on his rookie deal.

Sun Aug 5 201213:48Sean Smith shed 24 pounds in offseason
Dolphins RCB Sean Smith reportedly shed 24 pounds this offseason.
Attempting to turn his inconsistent career around with a fresh attitude, Smith also cut his dreadlocks. "The coaches like it," he said. Smith needs to hold off Richard Marshall to keep his starting job. Pro Football Focus charged Smith with five TD passes allowed in 2011, and a 90.8 QB rating in his coverage.

Mon Sep 12 201121:44Sean Smith sidelined with cramps in 3rd
Dolphins RCB Sean Smith left Monday's Week 1 game with cramps but returned shortly after.
Dolphins defenders are dropping like flies, as Smith joined cornerback partner Vontae Davis as one of multiple Miami players who missed snaps with cramps. Tom Brady had his way with a Fins' secondary sans Smith and Davis, so the team has to hope their guys can hold up for the fourth quarter.
