Sun Feb 27 201113:47Martz refuses to commit to Hanie as No. 2 QB
Offensive coordinator Mike Martz once again is refusing to commit to Caleb Hanie as Jay Cutler's primary backup.
"I don't know. We will see," Martz said. "We don't have to worry about any of that right now." Martz made a fool out of himself by pushing washed-up veteran Todd Collins ahead of Hanie on the depth chart in the middle of last season. Hanie is unfortunately just a restricted free agent, so he's likely to be stuck with Martz for another year.

Fri Feb 4 201109:30Hanie 'won't shy away' from free agent offers
Caleb Hanie, an impending restricted free agent, has made it clear that he won't "shy away" from a better opportunity elsewhere.
It's hard to blame Hanie for wanting to capitalize on his NFC Championship game near-comeback performance. He can't have much confidence in the Bears coaching staff after they demoted him back to third string at mid-season in favor of a washed up Todd Collins. The Bears can match any offer Hanie receives this offseason.

Tue Feb 1 201113:57Hanie's stock went up in Bears' eyes
GM Jerry Angelo confirmed that QB Caleb Hanie's stock "went up in our eyes" after his performance in the NFC Championship game.
"He showed poise. You want to look for that at the quarterback position," said Angelo, as if he's not the most clueless exec in the league when it comes to evaluating QBs. Hanie is set for restricted free agency. The Bears will likely respond with the required second-round tender to keep him in Chicago as the backup to Jay Cutler.

Thu Jan 27 201109:50Bears need to give Hanie 2nd-rd tender
The Bears will need to extend a second-round tender to restricted free agent Caleb Hanie if they're serious about retaining him.
If the Bears only gave Hanie a "low" tender and another team signed him to an offer sheet, they'd receive no compensation. The second-round tender should be valued in the $2 million range. It's an affordable number for a quality backup who nearly led a comeback in the NFC Championship Game.

Sun Jan 23 201119:33Hanie almost plays role of hero for Bears
Coming on in relief of Jay Cutler and Todd Collins at the end of the third quarter, Caleb Hanie completed 13-of-20 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's season-ending loss to the Packers.
Hanie almost became one of the unlikeliest heroes in NFL history. He started the day as the emergency third quarterback but led two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to bring the Bears within 21-14. The potential game-tying drive ended with an interception, but it's clear that Hanie's mobility gave the Bears at least a chance to win. The pick-six he threw to B.J. Raji is almost forgotten already. Set to become a free agent, Hanie likely earned himself a backup job next season.
Sun Jan 16 201111:48Bears Divisional Round inactives
Bears declared TE Desmond Clark, DT Marcus Harrison, CB D.J. Moore, CB Joshua Moore, S Craig Steltz, C Edwin Williams, OT Herman Johnson and third QB Caleb Hanie inactive for the Divisional Round.
As reported earlier in the week, SLB Pisa Tinoisamoa will return to the Bears' starting lineup on Sunday, replacing Nick Roach. He had been out since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on December 6. All things considered, a very quiet day on the injury front for a Bears team that earned a week of rest following the end of the regular season.
Tue Oct 12 201013:09Report: Hanie now Bears' No. 2 QB
Caleb Hanie has reportedly bypassed Todd Collins as the Bears' No. 2 quarterback.
Collins gave them no other choice with his performance against the Panthers. The 38-year-old became just the fifth quarterback in the last 20 years to throw four interceptions without a touchdown in a game his team won. If Jay Cutler (concussion) encounters a setback this week, Hanie will start against Seattle. Collins isn't long for the Bears' roster.

Mon Oct 11 201012:33Hanie to get a look if Cutler can't go?
Beat writer Brad Biggs thinks Caleb Hanie will start in Week 6 if Jay Cutler (concussion) is forced to sit again.
Signs are pointing toward Cutler being cleared, so this will likely end up as a moot point. But Todd Collins was so bad on Sunday that the Bears have no choice but to promote the raw Hanie to backup status.

Mon Aug 30 201017:16Caleb Hanie back on practice field
Bears QB Caleb Hanie (shoulder) returned to the practice field Monday.
With Todd Collins on board, Hanie will open the year as a third-stringer.

Mon Aug 23 201015:33Hanie to be demoted in Chicago
The Bears are expected to demote Caleb Hanie to third on the quarterback depth chart following the addition of Todd Collins.
Collins is familiar with Mike Martz's terminology after backing up Trent Green for several years under Dick Vermeil in Kansas City. Martz reportedly also "didn't feel comfortable" going with the still-developing Hanie behind Jay Cutler. Hanie (shoulder) is not expected to be healthy until Week 1.

Thu Aug 19 201009:24Martz confident in Hanie as No. 2 QB
Offensive coordinator Mike Martz is confident in Caleb Hanie as the Bears' No. 2 QB this season.
"Caleb is further than I thought he would be," Martz said. "I was very pleased with him in that (first preseason) game." Martz has been blowing more smoke than any coach in the league, so it's hard to take him at face value after the team flirted with veteran options all summer long. Hanie is expected to miss at least two weeks with his recent shoulder injury.

Mon Aug 16 201013:25Hanie will not need surgery on shoulder
MRI results confirmed that Bears backup QB Caleb Hanie will not need surgery on his right shoulder.
It sounds like Hanie does not expect to miss much time with the injury. "I am not worried about losing the No. 2 job," said Hanie on Monday. "That's not a worry at all."

Mon Aug 16 201009:40Hanie has a shoulder sprain
Bears backup QB Caleb Hanie was diagnosed with a shoulder sprain after leaving Saturday's preseason opener early.
Hanie was scheduled for an MRI, the results of which are unknown. The unimpressive rookie Dan LeFevour stands to get some extra reps this week.

Sat Aug 14 201023:25Bears QB Hanie exits with shoulder injury
Bears backup QB Caleb Hanie left Saturday's preseason opener against the Chargers with a shoulder injury.
Chargers LB Antwan Applewhite sacked Hanie, pushing his shoulder into the turf while causing a fumble. Halie was then escorted to the locker room by the Bears' medical staff. He was 10-of-17 for 147 yards, one touchdown, and one interception before the injury.

Wed Jun 30 201009:23Hanie has the No. 2 gig locked?
The Bears are content entering the season with Caleb Hanie as their No. 2 quarterback, sources tell ESPN.com.
Hanie finished the offseason program on a high note, apparently instilling confidence in the Bears' staff that they didn't need to sign Marc Bulger. Hanie has a big arm and will be on the fantasy radar if Jay Cutler gets hurt this year.

Thu Jun 24 201018:31Bears aren't ruling veteran addition at QB
Bears coach Lovie Smith still isn't ruling out adding a veteran quarterback after Marc Bulger signed with the Ravens.
"We can't say that it's never going to happen," Smith said. "We've kept all of our options open with everyone." After being turned down by a retired Trent Green, the only available QB with experience under Mike Martz is Josh McCown of the UFL's Hartford Colonials.

Thu May 6 201014:57Bears still considering veteran backup QB
Bears GM Jerry Angelo is "still exploring" the possibility of bringing in a veteran to act as the No. 2 quarterback.
A final decision will be on hold until Caleb Hanie and Dan LeFevour show their wares in spring practices. One of the two could be headed to the practice squad. Marc Bulger, with ties to Mike Martz, would be the obvious candidate to replace Hanie as the No. 2 QB.
