Eric Surkamp was greeted rudely in his first start in the majors this season, getting rocked for seven runs over 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Reds.
He gave up nine hits, including two homers, and failed to strike out a batter. In fairness to Surkamp, he had just 36 minor league innings under his belt since Tommy John surgery and probably wasn't ready for a call to the majors. He'll be sent back down.

Eric Surkamp will be recalled to start one of the games of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Reds.
Surkamp has missed most of this season while coming back from Tommy John surgery. He's pitched pretty well since returning last month, though, posting a 4.00 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 33/12 K/BB ratio over 36 innings. He shouldn't be used in fantasy leagues.

Surkamp, making his way back from Tommy John surgery, posted a 2.93 ERA and a 17/3 K/BB ratio in 15 1/3 innings over five rehab starts with High-A San Jose. He'll serve as rotation depth at Triple-A for now and could be an option for a call-up during the second half.

Eric Surkamp underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery Wednesday.
Surkamp was originally placed on the disabled list during spring training with what was termed as a flexor tendon strain in his throwing elbow. The 25-year-old southpaw attempted to ramp up his throwing program, but the discomfort persisted. He'll now be sidelined until the second half of 2013.

This was done to make room for Brad Penny on the 40-man roster. Surkamp is currently shut down after suffering a flexor tendon strain in his throwing elbow at the end of spring training. He's been slow to make progress and his ability to return this season is still uncertain.
