Kelly suffered the injury while making a catch along the right field foul line in Thursday's game against the Cardinals. He's being called "day-to-day," and seems likely to avoid a stint on the 15-day disabled list.

Kelly had not pitched since college, but still managed to go 2-2 on Mets hitter Scott Hairston before inducing him into a harmless fly out to center field. His fastball was clocked at a solid 86 MPH. Although we don't anticipate seeing him on the mound again, Kelly can take pride in being the only Tigers pitcher (out of eight) in the first two games of their series to keep the Mets hitless.

Kelly's bomb was his first of the season, and would be the only run Alexi Ogando allowed in seven innings of work. He later added another RBI with a ninth-inning groundout. Now batting .241 with five RBI through 79 at-bats, Kelly can be safely ignored in all formats.

Brandon Inge isn't hurt, but Tigers manager Jim Leyland is trying to find a way to generate some more offense. While there's nothing to suggest that Inge has lost his job, keep in mind that he's batting just .208 with one home run on the season and .190 (23-for-121) over his last 38 games.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland confirmed Tuesday that Don Kelly will be on the team's Opening Day roster.

"There's something to be said for guys like Don Kelly," said Leyland. "First of all, he's a better player than people think. He did very well when he got a chance to play a little bit more last year. He got some big hits, played all over. He can play second base, turned two or three nice double plays [Monday against the Mets], made a couple nice plays. He's a real valuable guy. He's really a good fit on our team." Kelly is useful off the bench because he can play both corner infield and outfield positions, but he's unlikely to have any fantasy value.

Manager Jim Leyland is considering using Don Kelly as the team's third catcher and will give him some reps during spring training.

From a fantasy perspective, versatility is always a plus, as Kelly could start qualifying at catcher in your league at some point during the season. However, Leyland foresees Kelly catching only when Victor Martinez is playing DH and when someone pinch-runs for Alex Avilla in the late innings. The 31-year-old has only 321 career major league at-bats. His fantasy impact will remain limited unless he earns more playing time.

We'd call this bad news. After four months of incredible futility, Kelly is hitting .370 with five homers in 54 at-bats since the beginning of August. The surge has made it far more likely that he'll be included in Detroit's plans for 2011.

On a day in which every other Tigers starter had at least two hits, Don Kelly went 0-for-4 Thursday against the Nationals.

Kelly is hitting .205 with just two extra-base hits, four RBI and four walks in 73 at-bats. Manager Jim Leyland fell in love with him this spring, but he's quite the waste of a roster spot. Ryan Raburn can play all of Kelly's positions and provide some pop in the process.
