Jonny Gomes is batting leadoff in Boston's starting lineup Thursday against the Orioles.
It's his first time in the leadoff spot since August 2007, when he was a member of the Rays. Gomes, owner of a .244 career batting average and .335 career OBP, is doubtful to hit there often this year for the Red Sox.

Sun Oct 27 201323:58Gomes' three-run blast evens World Series
Jonny Gomes blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning on Sunday, powering the Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Cardinals and evening the World Series at two games apiece.
Gomes, who was a late addition to the lineup after Shane Victorino was scratched with a sore back, wound up being the hero on baseball's biggest stage. With the score knotted at 1-1 and two outs in the sixth inning, a Dustin Pedroia single and David Ortiz walk set the stage for his dramatic blast. Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny called upon Seth Manness to relieve Lance Lynn, who Gomes greeted by smacking a 2-2 offering over the boards in left field. Gomes also drew a pair of walks on the night, finishing 1-for-2, with the go-ahead homer being his first hit of the World Series.

Wed Oct 23 201315:49Gomes starts in LF for Game 1 of World Series
Jonny Gomes will start in left field for Game 1 of the World Series against the Cardinals on Wednesday.
The Red Sox are 6-0 this postseason with Gomes in the lineup, so manager John Farrell has decided against starting Daniel Nava, even with right-hander Adam Wainwright on the hill for the Cardinals. The full Boston lineup: Jacoby Ellsbury CF, Shane Victorino RF, Dustin Pedroia 2B, David Ortiz DH, Mike Napoli 1B, Gomes LF, Xander Bogaerts 3B, Stephen Drew SS, David Ross C. Jon Lester will start the game for Boston.

Mon Oct 21 201316:08Gomes likely to start in LF for Game 1 of WS
Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated Monday that Jonny Gomes will likely start over Daniel Nava for Game 1 of the World Series against the Cardinals on Wednesday.
Gomes has started over Nava in four of the last six games, something Farrell suggests is due to his intangibles, including his baserunning and defense in left field. It doesn't sound like any changes are in store, even with right-hander Adam Wainwright on the hill for St. Louis in Game 1. "Daniel Nava is certainly not forgotten," said Farrell. "To use every available guy we have, he's going to be involved in this. We haven't made out Wednesday's lineup yet, but can't go away from maybe a little bit of momentum that a certain lineup has provided for us."

Fri Oct 18 201317:05Jonny Gomes to start in LF in Game 6
Jonny Gomes will start in left field in Saturday's ALCS Game 6.
Red Sox manager John Farrell has mostly stuck with Gomes in left field even against right-handers, feeling that he brings intangibles to the table that Daniel Nava lacks. Gomes is batting just .190/.261/.238 over eight games this postseason.

The full lineup has Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Mike Napoli, Gomes, Will Middlebrooks, Stephen Drew and David Ross.

Fri Sep 27 201322:38Gomes has three hits, homer in win over O's
Jonny Gomes went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, a walk, and three runs scored in Friday's win over the Orioles.
Gomes started the season slow, but he's hitting .282 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 68 games dating back to the first week of June. Signed due to his reputation against left-handed pitching, he could be a valuable piece of the puzzle during the postseason.

Gomes hasn't been his usual lefty-killer self this season, but he managed a walk, an RBI single, and a double against CC Sabathia on Saturday. The 32-year-old is batting .240/.342/.421 with 12 home runs and 49 RBI in 108 games this season.

Jonny Gomes slugged a three-run homer Saturday to help the Red Sox beat the red-hot Dodgers.
Gomes took Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu deep in the top of the first inning as part of a four-run Red Sox frame. He's been a nice source of power all year for Boston.

Fri Jul 19 201322:51Jonny Gomes belts two-run homer to lead Sox
Jonny Gomes belted a two-run homer on Friday, powering the Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over Andy Pettitte and the Yankees.
Gomes also doubled in the game, finishing 2-for-4. With the emergence of Daniel Nava, Gomes has been relegated primarily to platoon duty, seeing most of his work against left-handed pitchers. Still, he's delivered decent power production, smacking seven homers and driving in 24 runs in just 178 at-bats.

Jonny Gomes lifted a pinch-hit, walk-off home run as the Red Sox beat the Padres 2-1 on Wednesday.

Fri Jun 28 201323:11Gomes has pinch-hit single in win
Jonny Gomes delivered a pinch-hit go-ahead RBI single in Friday's 7-5 win over the Blue Jays.
Gomes entered Friday's action hitting just .197 against southpaws this season, but Red Sox manager John Farrell went with him over Daniel Nava against Brett Cecil in the seventh inning. The move paid off, as Gomes ripped a single past Maicer Izturis to put the Red Sox in front. Gomes owns a .277/.378/.502 batting line against southpaws, so we still expect him to carve out a niche for the Red Sox, even if it doesn't result in much of the way of fantasy value.

Tue Jun 18 201322:50Gomes hits walkoff HR as Red Sox beat Rays
Jonny Gomes hit a walkoff two-run homer as the Red Sox rallied to beat the Rays on Tuesday night.
Boston also won the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader with Tampa Bay. Gomes did not play in that earlier game and had not managed a hit through his first three at-bats when he came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. The rest, as they say, is history.

Fri Jun 14 201301:14Gomes grounds out as a pinch-hitter
Jonny Gomes grounded out as a pinch-hitter Thursday against the Orioles.
Boston has drastically cut down on Gomes' at-bats as they utilize him as they should have all along -- as a lefty masher. Unfortunately, he hasn't been hitting anyone this year, batting .205/.333/.333 over 117 at-bats.

Tue May 14 201304:36Gomes' struggles continue into May
Jonny Gomes has just four hits (over 21 at-bats) in May.
Gomes has lost playing time due to a sluggish start and Boston's plethora of corner players. Although he's batting just .194 with two homers, and has only one multi-hit game since Opening Day, Gomes has still posted a solid .346 OBP, nine points better than his career mark. Gomes' slugging percentage is more than 100 points beneath his career average, but the lefty-masher could heat up with the weather as long as he isn't asked to start against righties.

Mon Apr 22 201316:05Gomes unavailable for Monday's game
Jonny Gomes is unavailable for Monday's game against the Athletics.
Gomes returned home to present for the birth of his child. It's not clear if he'll be placed on the paternity leave list. Daniel Nava will make the start in left field Monday against right-hander A.J. Griffin.

Sun Mar 24 201311:29Red Sox to use rotation at DH
Red Sox manager John Farrell plans to use multiple players in the designated hitter spot while David Ortiz is out.
Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli, Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia are all options to see time in the spot. "We feel like this will be a rotating thing rather than one person being the regular DH," Farrell said. "It serves a couple of benefits. You're looking for matchups; you're looking for a day off their feet." Farrell's thinking seems likely to change if Jackie Bradley winds up making the club, as he would figure to play regularly in left field and leave the DH spot for Gomes.

Sun Mar 17 201316:26Jonny Gomes knocks in four for Red Sox
Jonny Gomes went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI against the Rays on Sunday.
The double, hit high off Jet Blue's Green Monster, would have been a homer in most parks. We're not very impressed with any plan that has Gomes starting in the outfield against right-handers, but since the playing time does figure to be there, he could be pretty valuable in fantasy leagues, particularly early in the season.
