Lincecum went to see a hip specialist in Colorado who recommended surgery for his ailing hip. Initially it seemed like the Giants placed Lincecum on the disabled list in order to give him a break from the rotation instead of sending him to the minors. Whether or not that is true, Lincecum ended up developing a degenerative hip issue and will miss the rest of the season.

Lincecum has battled through a number of injuries throughout the season and it remains to be seen if he'll rejoin the roster again this season. Thursday's plan with Dr. Marc Philippon should shed some light on Lincecum's prognosis for the rest of the year, but even if he does make it back to the mound, it'll be in a low-leverage bullpen role in all likelihood.

Linecum (forearm) has encountered a setback in his recovery from hip and back discomfort, leading him to acknowledge the possibility that he may not pitch again this season, the San Jose Mercury News reports. "I really don't know. I mean, I hope not," said Lincecum. "I can't predict the future. I have good days and bad days. The bad days are outshining the good ones."

Originally placed on the disabled list with a forearm contusion, Lincecum is now bothered by both his hip and back, leaving him unable to throw for the past week. Even if he makes a late-season return, he'll likely be limited to a role in the bullpen. Lincecum will be a free agent after the season.
