Tue Aug 7 201219:17Giants interested in Lyle Overbay
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants have interest in Lyle Overbay.
However, Schulman notes that they would like Overbay to get in some at-bats at Triple-A Fresno before joining the major league club, which the veteran first baseman isn't interested in doing. Overbay, who was released by the Diamondbacks Monday, would give the Giants a potential replacement for Aubrey Huff (knee), whose season is in jeopardy.

Diamondbacks released 1B Lyle Overbay.
Overbay was designated for assignment last week, and reportedly drew interest from the Orioles and Reds. If signed, he would count for a pro-rated portion of the veteran minimum.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Reds are talking to the Diamondbacks about a trade for Lyle Overbay.
Overbay was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Monday in order to make room for Chris Johnson on the roster. If acquired, the 35-year-old would function as a backup first baseman. The 35-year-old is hitting .292/.367/.448 with two homers and an .815 OPS in 110 plate appearances this season.

Wed May 23 201201:24Lyle Overbay goes 4-for-4, homers
Lyle Overbay went 4-for-4 with a homer and a double against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
More bad news for Paul Goldschmidt owners. Overbay has driven in a total of three runs in 50 at-bats since his big game on Opening Day, but he is hitting .370 for the year now. With the Diamondbacks looking to cut back on the strikeouts -- rightly or wrongly -- Overbay could be in line for more playing time.

Thu May 10 201205:13Overbay makes most of rare start with 3 hits
Lyle Overbay went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Wednesday's 7-2 setback to the Cardinals.
With Paul Goldschmidt batting .218, manager Kirk Gibson turned to the veteran. Overbay is batting .333 with a home run in 42 at-bats, and should continue to be a useful safety valve for the Diamondbacks if Goldschmidt continues to struggle.

Sun Apr 8 201219:29Overbay has huge day in spot-start
Lyle Overbay homered and doubled twice in Sunday's win over the Giants.
Overbay finished his day 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Obviously a huge afternoon, but Overbay is going to need Paul Goldschmidt to struggle to become an asset in NL-only leagues.

Mon Apr 2 201218:53Overbay finishes spring with .313 average
Lyle Overbay homered, doubled and scored a pair of runs in Monday's loss to the Cubs.
The extra-base hits were Overbay's third and fourth of the spring, and bring his final Cactus Line average to a final resting place of .313 over 48 at-bats. Unless you're a Paul Goldschmidt owner with an extra roster spot in an NL-only league, there's no reason for Overbay to be anywhere other than the waiver wire come Opening Day.

Fri Dec 9 201117:39D-Backs sign 1B Overbay to one-year deal
Diamondbacks signed 1B Lyle Overbay to a one-year, $1 million contract.
The two sides agreed to terms Thursday and the deal was officially announced Friday afternoon. Overbay was a bust with Pittsburgh this past season before getting released in early August, but he hit well with the Diamondbacks down the stretch. Assuming young slugger Paul Goldschmidt will be the starting first baseman next season, Overbay is a good fit as a handy backup and left-handed bat off the bench.

Thu Dec 8 201108:29D-Backs, Overbay agree on one-year deal
MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that the Diamondbacks and Lyle Overbay have agreed to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.
We learned on Tuesday that the two sides were close to a deal. Overbay, who turns 35 in January, batted .286 (12-for-42) with one home run, 10 RBI and an .840 OPS in 18 games down the stretch with Arizona this past season. He'll serve as a backup to young slugger Paul Goldschmidt at first base in 2012.

Tue Dec 6 201122:26D'Backs close to re-signing Lyle Overbay
Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that the Diamondbacks are close to re-signing Lyle Overbay on a one-year deal.
"I would say it's progressing well, but it's not done," D'Backs GM Kevin Towers said. "Everything looks good, although it's not a done deal. I'm cautiously optimistic. We still have some things that we have to work through that we're still working through, but nothing's really changed. My gut is he'll still end up coming here." Overbay will serve as a backup to Paul Goldschmidt at first base and give them a viable pinch-hitter. He had a .840 OPS in 49 plate appearances for the Snakes this past season.

Thu Dec 1 201118:31D'Backs have made offer to 1B Lyle Overbay
According to Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona, the D'Backs have offered a contract to Lyle Overbay.
The deal is believed to be for one year and the Diamondbacks are expecting a decision early next week. Overbay, 34, posted a promising .840 OPS in 49 plate appearances for the Snakes this past season. He'd serve as a backup to Paul Goldschmidt in 2012.

Fri Nov 4 201109:21D'Backs would like Lyle Overbay back
The Diamondbacks are interested in re-signing Lyle Overbay to serve in a bench role.
The interest is mutual, but Overbay first wants to see if he has a shot elsewhere at more playing time. "He has interest in coming back, but he wants to see if there's maybe an opportunity with a little more playing time," GM Kevin Towers said. "I think the agent and Lyle know we're pretty much committed to Goldy (Paul Goldschmidt) and this is a part-time role." It would be a big surprise if Overbay were to land a starting job, so returning to Arizona might be his best option.

Sat Oct 1 201117:54Overbay hitless in loss to Brewers
Lyle Overbay went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Saturday in a loss to the Brewers in Game 1 of the NLDS.
We were surprised to see Overbay in the starting lineup, even though Paul Goldschmidt struggled to end the regular season. We're guessing the rookie will be at first base Sunday afternoon against Zack Greinke.

Sat Oct 1 201111:02Overbay starting at 1B over Goldschmidt
Lyle Overbay is starting Game 1 of the NLDS at first base over Paul Goldschmidt.
Goldschmidt finished the season in a 4-for-23 slump at the plate, which earned him a seat on the bench. Overbay did hit a solid .286/.388/.452 in 18 games for the D'Backs down the stretch and is a better defensive first baseman, but we would have liked to see manager Kirk Gibson give the rookie a shot. The veteran has two singles in three at-bats in his career against Brewers' Game 1 starter Yovani Gallardo.

Tue Aug 16 201122:12Overbay plays hero in 1st start with D'Backs
In his first start since signing with the Diamondbacks, Lyle Overbay played the hero, going 3-for-4 with a double and all three of the team's RBI in Tuesday's 3-2 win against the Phillies.
Overbay's two-run double in the ninth inning off Roy Halladay won the game for Arizona. The Diamondbacks signed him last week for an infusion of depth at first base in the wake of Xavier Nady's fractured left hand. Overbay hit just .227/.300/.349 in 103 games with the Pirates this season before getting released, but he could wrangle enough at-bats from Paul Goldschmidt to be worth adding in deeper NL-only leagues swinging in the hitter-friendly conditions in Arizona.

Sat Aug 13 201116:09Diamondbacks sign Bucs castoff Lyle Overbay
Diamondbacks signed 1B Lyle Overbay.
The D'Backs needed an infusion of depth at first base in the wake of Xavier Nady's fractured left hand. Overbay hit just .227/.300/.349 in 103 games with the Pirates this season before getting released, but he's capable of getting hot for a stretch in the hitter-friendly conditions down in Arizona.
